(P)oGsMC 4-0 (T)TLAF-Liquid`Jinro

P7 Game 1 - Steppes of War T1
+ Show Spoiler [Show Recap] +

Jinro opened 12 barracks, MC 12 gateway followed by 18 core. At 19 food Jinro hid a proxy factory in a nook near MC's ramp. MC chrono boosted a zealot out of his first gateway and sent it straight into Jinro's base just as a bunker started. 3 marines chased the zealot away but only took 13 health from it and not before the scv making the bunker was killed. A second zealot joined the first and MC sent both back up the ramp. Jinro defended with 2 scvs and 4 marines while building the bunker and sent the 1 surviving marine into the bunker as soon as it finished. A stalker joined the zealots and the units walked past the bunker to attack the barracks. Jinro pulled all his scvs and tried to hold as his marines built 1 at a time. In MC's base Jinro harassed the probes with a hellion but as soon as it was destroyed Jinro typed out.

P1 Game 2 - Xel'Naga CavernsT7
+ Show Spoiler [Show Recap] +

Jinro and MC both made their first unit producing structure at 12 food. Jinro took his gas at 13 food, MC his at 15 before building a cybernetics core as soon as his gateway finished. At 30 food MC warped in two more gateways while Jinro, done researching concussive shell, produced marines and marauders out of 1 tech lab barracks and 1 reactor barracks. At 35 food he began building a 2nd command center in his main. Of MC's first 7 units, 6 were sentries. Around 38 food he started his 2nd nexus. At 45 food Jinro made 2 more barracks and 2 bunkers at the front of his natural. With 3 zealots, 6 stalkers, 7 sentries, and a forward pylon to reinforce, MC used guardian shield and attacked into Jinro's natural, just before stim finished researching.

Using a total of 12 force fields MC split Jinro's units, prevented the bunkers from being repaired, and destroyed Jinro's 2nd command center. MC put a force field on Jinro's ramp and retreated back to his natural. 40 supply behind, Jinro pulled his units together and attacked. Jinro's infantry slipped by the force fields but they were not enough. Jinro conceded the game.

P11 Game 3 - Shakuras PlateauT5
+ Show Spoiler [Show Recap] +

MC opened 12 gateway, gas, cybernetics core. Jinro opened 12 barracks, 13 gas. Jinro added a tech lab to his barracks and immediately began researching concussive shell. MC made a sentry, then zealot as his first two units while, at 24 food, Jinro started his 2nd command center in his natural. Close to 30 food MC warped in a stargate. Jinro began two more barracks and scouted MC's base with a reaper, though missing the stargate. Jinro added a 2nd bunker to the top of the ramp at his natural but MC attacked before it finished. Scvs were blocked from repairing the full bunker with force fields as marines on highground shot at the 2 voidrays. Force fields on Jinro's ramp kept the Terran units split and Jinro soon gg'd.

P11 Game 4 - Jungle BasinT5
+ Show Spoiler [Show Recap] +

Jinro and MC built their barracks and gateway at 12 food. Jinro took his gas at 13 supply, MC his at 15. At 18 food Jang Min Chul built his cybernetics core as Jinro built a reactor and 2nd barracks at 16 food. MC made a zealot before sentry and Jinro, as soon as his 2nd barracks and reactor finished, built a proxy factory next to MC's natural and took his 2nd gas. MC started a 2nd gateway and twilight council at 27 food. At 23 food Jinro cancelled a tech lab he had just started on his 2nd barracks and began to build an armory. Seconds later, at 36 food MC warped in his dark shrine. 7 minutes into the game Jinro pulled half of his scvs and with 1 thor and 9 marines attacked into MC's main.

MC warped 2 dark templar into the back of Jinro's base with a pylon next to the destructible rocks. 3 zealots and 1 sentry ran from Jinro's units as he stomped over a force field and into MC's main. Jinro immediately targeted the lone pylon powering MC's 2 warpgates, destroying it before additional dark templar could be warped in. Jinro started an engineering bay and bunker in MC's base while destroying the nexus and running his scvs from the dark templar to his units. MC destroyed Jinro's command center and built a nexus at Jinro's natural. Jinro did not have enough minerals to make a new command center and as soon as he scouted MC's base he gg'd.

TLAF-Liquid`Jinro Semifinals: The Aftermath

Today certainly didn't go as you planned it. What are you going after to get your mind off the disappointing result?

I was going to hit the gym and just do everything else Ive been too busy to do, but they asked if I wanted to go clubbing so I'm doing that instead.

How would you describe what happened today?

What Minchul always tells me: "You early game chobo, late game gosu." Also, I thought I'd need to take economic risks to get ahead macro wise, but it turns out vs what he had planned I'd been better off being super safe... oh well.

Were you expecting him to play less aggressive?

I expected him to cheese maybe a couple of times but generally play safe, yes.

Game four was very close. What are your thoughts about it?

Everything that could go wrong went wrong. I wanted to cancel the second barracks, with the rationale that him seeing two rax would cause him to make more sentries with whatever FE I expected him to do. Instead I missed the probe and it scouted everything. So I thought, whatever, he sees 2 gas fast he will think I'm faking for Banshee or something and make robo.... which is what he did in ro64 vs a fake 2 rax banshee... but he went DT. I knew going in this build auto lost to DT so it was frustrating.

Even though you lost this round, did you feel you accomplished something this GSL?

I guess so - all the people who came up to me after the game certainly made me feel like maybe I did. It was very nice and definitely made me feel better.

You did very well for your first GSL, making semifinals and achieving Code S. What are your goals for the next season?

Winning.

You said you would stay in Korea as long as you achieved Code S and could compete in the GSLs. Does this result help motivate you?

Yeah, but it will be more so motivating in a few days than it is right now. I don't like losing.

You were defeated by your teammate oGsMC. Are you going to help him practice this next week for the finals?

Yeah I cant imagine a scenario where he doesn't get everyones practice time. I told him he'd better win, or else .

Will you be taking a break after this next week?

A few days break where I do everything I havent been able to do, catch up on shows, and I can finally switch equipment. I bought a new mouse that I've put off using for a month now. Gym!

You made the GSL very exciting for a lot of the international community. Any last words for your supporters? There were a lot of words of encouragement on the forums despite your loss.

I really appreciated the kind words and everyone who came up to me after the games today, it really made me feel better. It was surprising to see sooo many Swedes there, I really wasn't expecting it and it felt good - I'll do better next time. Thanks for everyone who helped me prepare, sorry it didn't go better. I owe at least some of them some sam gyeob sal.

GSL3 Foreigner Postscript

Even though TLAF-Liquid`Jinro was eliminated yesterday, this season has been very successful for "foreigners" overall. A record number of international players attended qualifiers, and four succeeded in advancing to the Round of 32. We also saw the first ever non-Korean to reach the semifinals. With the addition of more foreigner team houses, we may see a repeat of Jinro's run in the near future. This concludes the Foreigner Special for GSL Season 3 -- keep an eye out for us when the GSL resumes in 2011.

maybe its even for the good he didn't achieve everything at once. winning mlg, qualifying for gsl, code-s and winning the whole thing could have been too much. now we can at least tell he'll be more than hungry next time. keep on HWAITING JINRO!

Game 4 must have been very very intense, especially for Jinro... but hey, at least he got all the way to Semifinals. He's improving fast!

Jinro is considered by some people to be the BEST terran in the world currently. I certainly think he is.

No cheese, no all-ins, just skill.

MC is a godtoss, and I feel like he could beat anyone right now. The only reason the series was lopsided is that MC specifically targeted a window of weakness in Jinro's builds.

Jinro, keep being the best terran in the world and when it comes time for Terran to win the GSL it will be you!

There is no definite 3rd place at GSL, same as there is no definite decision for the other placements except 1st and 2nd.

And this ladies and gentlemen is why no foreign tourney can match GSL, we've had over a week of hype for Jinro, in the end he lost to a better player but in any other tourney it would have just been an hour or two.

Jinro you've earnt many fans this GSL and proven that MLG was no fluke, if anything losing here is in keeping with your style: Ever lasting progress, stable, secure and ultimately unstoppable. Just takes time.

Long live Jinro ! and may your Beanie be ever guiding !

Jinro came out of nowhere to be by far the best foreign terran around, and quite possibly the best foreigner around, period. It's been really nice see him make an impact on his seen and I hope he does even better in the next incarnation of the GSL.

Who knows, John said that there could be a surprise for the foreigners for the finals day (although not likely since that would change the prize structure)

On-topic: Jinro played really well for this tournament and it's too bad he couldn't beat MC. However, a friendly rivalry between the two can only make you a stronger player.

It's a sad loss number-wise perhaps, but he gave it a good fight and rather like this to a really good (not to mention pleasant) player than some of the other scenarios. Amazing run Jinro, nobody would have believed it in your first GSL, looking forward to seeing you in the next one.

And yeah, MC'd better win it lol. Not that I'm doubting it.

It was so frustrating to watch these games, oGsMC got the BO advantage every single game and ended it with his first push. Jinro didn't even get the chance to play his game

I can't even imagine oGsMC losing the finals.

It was a great run by Jinro nevertheless. No koreans will take foreigners lightly after this.

You did very well for your first GSL, making semifinals and achieving Code S. What are your goals for the next season?

Winning.

Badass.

Jinro, you are the man. Both for repping foreigners and macro style terran - don't let a loss to MC get you down. Right now, you are one of the best starcraft players on the world, and probably the best or second best terran. I have full confidence that this finish - which is fantastically better than I would have hoped for - is just the beginning of your long and successful career of play sc2 for a living.

Man, Jinro and MC are just sssoooooooooooo awesome!

And it's even more awesome to see that they are such good friends! Along with the help of some friendly rivalry between them, everyone will soon realize that there's only good things to come from that relationship!

Good job Jinro! Keep up the good work!

I shed a little tear for Jinro, but I feel like he will be one of the most consistant players in 2011. 4-0 is a tough way to go out (and mostly on BO losses).

I'm going to call him winner for season 5, instead, with a good showing in season 4. Obviously I have nothing to back this up, I just felt like making a vaguely-plausible prediction about everybody's favourite Terran. However, we're definitely in agreement that Jinro is a badass.

In all seriousness, Jinro, you did fantastically well in this tournament. Considering who you lost to, it's clear that you have nothing to be ashamed of. You're now arguably the most successful foreigner in SC2 (in terms of best GSL placement and GomTV's point system), and we all expect amazing things from you in the future. (But we love you no matter what!)

I'd like to say thanks to Jinro for taking the time to sign fanart and take pictures with everyone after the games.

Having watched all of the GSL, I can safely say that you're a step above every other Terran and the only reason you lost was because MC is 2 steps above everyone.

RO4 is truly a huge accomplishment for the foriegner scene. Jinro should be proud for pushing the limits of what non-Koreans are capable of in the Starcraft scene. Maybe some of the other foreigners will be motivated to do better as well!

As for the finals themselves, gawd MC had better win. If Rain wins I think I'm going to cry myself to sleep.

I wanted to thank Jinro for achieving so much and giving us hope for the future of foreigners in Korea! I'm sure you'll have a great year 2011!!
Also thanks to TeamLiquid for the very nice coverage! I couldn't watch anything because of work but the great Battle reports and recaps helped a lot over that.
And a thank you to the translators! I really appreciate your work which is fast and accurate. You bring us the Koreans a bit closer!

Awesome work Jinro, been chearing for you since GSL season one and was so happy when you qualified for S3. And when you got S-class i was exstatic, and then to make it to R4 is just unbelivably good.

Do not let the loss get you down, MC is slightly ahead of you at this time and was able to tailor his play towards your play better than you. Next time could be different. Regardless, you have earned a die-hard fan here.

Jinro made me root for a terran with all my heart, didn't see that one coming. And not only because he is a swede and really cool guy, but also his playstyle is very entertaining too watch.

Thanks for making GSL3 so exciting JINRO!

Such an interesting problem for someone to have. Most people seem to have the opposite issue where they prefer to end the game fast due to insecurity about their chances going into the late game. You can certainly tell Jinro really worked on becoming genuinely good at the normal stand-up macro game that everyone loves to see. He didn't take the cheesy shortcut-allin route but in doing so perhaps missed certain skills that are needed in the early game.

Either way, excellent showing and I can't wait for next year.

Great run! Seeing a foreigner, no less the man formerly known as FA, pull a run like this is especially inspiring and heartwarming. From a more or less remote place in the world, I couldn't help but have this always on my mind.

You have lost to your teammate in the semi-finals. It is a sign of his strength, not of your weakness.

Hey Jinro,

Take a look back at how ecstatic you were during the interview after you got into Ro4. Now you're not sure if you've accomplished anything? I know you got crushed pretty hard, and that has got to feel awful for a while but you're in an incredibly strong place. Think about it this way:

You're probably the strongest Terran user on earth right now. You only have one obvious hole in your game, but since you lost to abuse of this weakness in on a huge stage every opponent in the future will try to use this against you. This is totally OK though, because you have incredible teams to practice with to close this hole.

Look at how far you've come since you went out to Korea. You went from "B team" to S class. The strongest TL. You did this, as you said, by working with Ret on macro and strong solid play. Now work with people like MC, TLO, etc., the crazy aggressive people, and learn to protect yourself from that. The only reason MC was able to break you so hard is because he knows you too well. He may have won, or he may have lost otherwise, but he knows your current weaknesses because he fucking lives with you. Next time, use your cheese build in the second game instead of the last when your opponent knows you will because your spirit is crushed. You have the potential to be a champion. We're all proud of you, and your path is clear.

Congratulations on Ro4.

You would have embarrassed both of the users on the other side of the bracket.
I hope Plexa's sig is right.

Amazing job Jinro, it's totally insane how quickly you went from being the other TL Terran into becoming one of the elite players in the world. Take some time off to get refocused and catch up on things you've been putting off, maybe even go see your family and such. You've got game and the support to become the best, so keep up the good work and know that we are all proud of you and rooting for you.

I have a lot of respect for Frozen Arbiter. Unlike most other Terrans, he doesn't try to all in. He knows it's possible to play a macro based game, and manages to do so. Definitely my favourite Terran in the world.

I see a lot of people making "Jinro wins next GSL" predictions, so I might as well give my own prediction: "Jinro amongst the first to drop from GSL Tier 1". And this should not be taken negatively, it's just an opinion.

did you see some of the names in there ? a lot only made code s during s.1 when play was at a ridiculously lower level or with qualifying over 3 seasons luckily and losing horribly in the tourney ro64 or 32.

there's easily 10 worse players than jinro in code s and seeing as how he could improve so much in only 2 months of practicing with OGS and TL guys, then adding on the practice time he's gonna get with the other foreigners that are coming to korea till the next gsl (EG etc.), it's highly unlikely he's gonna drop from code s before the first 2 tourneys -at least- are done with, even with all the time other people have to practice till gsl4

i do find it equally unlikely he's going to win any of them, true, but one can only hope

GG jinro

also,

remember FD in s.1 ? MC is, atm, even more ahead of everyone else than FD was in s.1, and the game ain't so new anymore either. so don't bring balance into discussion here please - unless you were ironical
