Official DreamHack Tournament Thread

Held twice a year in Sweden, Dreamhack is by far the largest regularly running LAN event in the world. Naturally, they have a long history of prestigious Starcraft competition and this season's event is no different. This is their first Starcraft 2 tournament, and comes with a monstrous 180,000 SEK (€18,000/$25,000) prize pool. Certainly enough money and honor on the line to give us, the viewers, spectacular games all the way through.

1st - $14,371 + Hardware
2nd - $4,308 + Hardware
3rd - $1,437 + Hardware

Who?

The player pool is a mix of invites, those who have previously qualified, and 8 slots to be divided up between participants of a BYOC LAN the day of the event. oGsTOP is even bringing his own computer to enter the fray through the on-site qualifications. Update: TOP will be taking Dimaga's slot, who is unable to attend With this lineup, competition will be as fierce as ever.

When?

In less than one day! The event itself starts then, although the BYOC and group play won't begin for several hours after that. Play lasts until the 27th, you can find a full schedule at their site here.

How?

You have several options for livestreams to watch games on, seen here. In addition to the official DreamHack stream (live.dreamhack.se) GLHF and Shoutcraft will be providing English commentary. Gamesports.net is handling German coverage and PlayDH.com / SVT Play if you want to hear the games in Swedish. All streams can be found on the official Dreamhack site. Of course if you're just browsing TL through the day, the our sidebar to the right will have links as always.

The official stream will be cast by the lovely Day[9] and d.Apollo team, the kind of top notch commentary expected for an event this grand.

Enjoy the games!

DreamHack Winter 2010: Player Preview
By Hot_Bid

With the recent addition of TLAF-Liquid`HuK, oGsInCa, and oGsTOP, DreamHack's invite lineup is one of the strongest for a single weekend SC2 event, comparable to MLG Dallas and IEM Cologne. It's a shame that EG.IdrA couldn't make it, but there's plenty of interesting players attending.

The Race Traitors

Mouz.Morrow and TLAF-Liquid`TLO both switched from Terran to Zerg. While TLO finished a respectable fifth at MLG Dallas, we have yet to even see Morrow's Zerg at a major tournament. Will he or won't he play Z? How good will it be? Will IdrA live up to his promise that "if Morrow wins a single prized tournament with zerg and ill never say the word balance again?"

Europe vs North America

Since IEM we haven't seen a lot of the top European players face off against North American competition. aTn.Socke, Dignitas.Sjow, and Duckload.White-Ra all attended an MLG, but DreamHack will be the first time Tyler, Huk, and Fenix see players like Tarson or Morrow in the brackets. The consensus among top players is that the EU server is slightly harder, and we'll see if that proves to be true.

The Old Schoolers

The first is Madfrog, a former Warcraft 3 pro, finding success in Korea and Europe before retiring in 2005. With the release of SC2, he's signed with SK and plays competitively again. The second is NTT, an old school Brood War gamer known for his biting tongue and unending SCV production. While he hasn't shown impressive tournament results yet, he still remains an interesting name.

From Seoul to Sweden

HuK brought two friends: oGsInCa and oGsTOP. These guys are two of the very best oGs has to offer. InCa is granted an invite slot while TOP almost certainly will qualify through the BYOC qualifiers. Both were eliminated in GSL qualifiers and thus come to Sweden on a mission. It's no vacation, they are here to win. Will DreamHack go the same way as Blizzcon, with Koreans taking first place? We'll see.

Something to Prove

This goes for every qualifier out to make a name for themselves. The invite field at DreamHack is strong, but that just means more opportunity for players like LaLuSh, Adelscott, or eight other qualifiers to show that they belong in this field. Could we see a complete unknown make it deep into this tournament? We saw it before in Korea with Torch qualifying for GSL1.

Predictions

InCa and TOP are the favorites, but InCa especially since he doesn't have to go through qualifiers. After that, it's anyone's tournament, with a lot of the invites able to take best-of series from each other. It should make for a very exciting weekend -- pay attention especially to groups C, E, and F.

There are so many epic games going on right now. I can barely keep track of them all. Ret played yesterday in the GSL ro64, Today Jinro and Idra played and tomorrow the dreamhack tournament will start. The amount of large tournaments and great games in Starcraft 2 keeps surprising me.

Dimaga will not play at Dreamhack because of a missing visa! TT

Unfortunately, like many of you already know Ukraine Zerg Dmitri ' mTwDIMAGA 'Filipchuk will not be on DreamHack'2010 LAN . No sooner had a visa to Sweden, despite the fact that the documents were submitted in advance. Already a misfortune, but do not despair, because DIMAGA visit ASUS'10 Autumn Kiev!

We can not wait!

Really looking forward to watching this. I haven't watched too many tournaments since they're either late at night or during class for me
I'd like to know how they figure out who to invite. To be honest, I don't know who many of the invites are, like ThorZaIN and ActionJesus. I'm guessing they were the ones who previously qualified.
I really like how they have a BYOC on-site qualifier for the guys that didn't get invited.
Looks like there'll be some good games, can't wait for it!

The difference of prize money betwen 1st and 2nd is huge... Can't imagine the 1st and 3rd... They couldn't get the same standard prize money from pokers' tournaments ?

Inca replaced BratOK, HuK replaced IdrA, therefore TOP had to play in the BYOC tournament today

Dimaga not going? That breaks my heart. I was about to freak out on my post but now everything is so empty in my little zergy heart...

Nevertheless hope for an awesome tournament and another legendary Dreamhack.

i would hope for TOP replacing Dimaga if i would have to play the qualifiers.
less korean opponents = more "foreign" opponents = easier to qualify

What does IdrA mean with this? Haven't followed too closely so I haven't heard that what context he told this in.

Then I'm soo rooting for morrow, would be funny :D

though .... zerg or not zerg, i don't think he could make it by a far margin, the overall caliber of the participants is like the most brutal i have seen so far in an european tournament and on top morrow having this sort of identity crysis ...

My favorite superhappy baneling Dimaga is out, what a shame.

Now I'm just crossing my fingers that the rest of my favorites makes it through the groups at least. Bo1 can easily create some bad upsets.

That you can watch several different streams is a great initiative and as much as I like Day9 I'm gonna give TotalBiscuit a shot, cause even though he is not a starcraft 2 genious, his knowledge is good enough and oh my fucking god is that guy hilarious. I just love the british humor.

I've seen him in some streamed weekly cup! Can't remember who casted it, but they picked to stream his game because 1) he was random and 2) had the most awesome name in the tournament.

If I remember correctly, he's done so-so in the tournaments I've seen, don't think I've seen him get past Ro8.

Yeah, I'm thinking it would be best for foreign starcraft if a korean gets to the finals but gets beaten there. It will both give koreans more incentive to travel to eu and na (they can take home money from more tournaments than wcg and blizzcon) and it will give the foreign scene some credibility if the koreans don't win everything.

well i guess its better then no tourney to watch, but its Bo1 ugh so rediculous. These tournaments better straighten some things out. And who the hell is Actionjesus.... really come on unless this is some super human EU player we have never heard of, couldn't Dreamhack found better players to invite?(EU,NA or Korea. The answer is yes) Id love to listen to the thought process on it, really!

"ok, Idra cant make it cause GSL.... lets not invite other international players to give our tourney more public attention. no that is stupid, branching out is noob! instead lets invite a bunch of EU players nobody has ever heard of and then make foriegners play BYOC.... excellent, profits for all"

I dunno... is this EU humor? really Bo1 tourney for $14000 and you invite EU nobodies instead of reputable international players, that promotes YOUR tournament and makes it better. Instead you have a BYOC round and have all the Pro players fly to sweden and rape your local population to get their rightful slots, just so your BYOC is not boring as all hell..... I dont get it .

But I'll be very happy to see top 3 go to non-EU players this year, maybe it will wake dreamhack up next year and get some decent EU players on the line up. Instead of relying solely on a few players that are expected to do well and carry the EU, either at EU tourneys or international ones.

Those players you havent heard of has qualified trough other tournaments, 8 players gonna qualify from the BYOC. So, you can stop acting like a douch. Its a fair deal for more players to get to the top.

Also, its bo1 in the group stage, I agree, its kinda retarded, but its a huge tournament (Like GSL, qith qualification and 32 players that gonna battle for it, in 3 days, not a month, so. Also there is other things there, its not just a SC2 event).

And also, Dreamhack is the only european tour that has ever had Koreans in it. And all the players that are invited are expected to do well, Its probably just you that dosent have a clue about the scene or something. And its on Swedish ground, ofcourse there is gonna be Swedish players invited. Actually theres alot less Swedish players invited than it would be in any other tournament. If it was a US tour, there would be 99.9% americans that got invited. So stop bitching about it.

Also I can add that Dreamhack has a free that has ultra mega HD quality on it. All the other tournaments has like really bad streamquality and if you want better you have to pay 20 US dollars for a few days.. So yeah.

wow your post is full of fail... Why dont you go and read about how players qualify and how they chose them instead of just assuming stupid things?

It has been stated over and over again, 15 invited players, 9 players has qualified through offline events with DH on Tour prior to the event and 8 spots are for the BYOC qualifier on spot. Regarding the bo1/bo3 issue, that's for the BYOC qualifier, it's mostly filled by noobs with a handful of decent players, which means the better players will most likely advance even tho it is just bo1.
Really, play for fun!

A. I'm not American.
B. If this is the only EU tournament to have Koreans would it not be logical to make them feel welcome and extend an Invitation, not an invitation to participate in BYOC. Don't respond, the answer is yes.
C.Good for you its on swedish ground. That doesnt make your players better then other pro's who are not just NA players you narrow sighted mongoloid. Sure invite those BYOC slots for locals don't waste garentee'd more viewers and attention on the tournament by inviting well known players.
D. Look at MLG season this year, each event had more and more Non-americans in it. With a Swede winning the last one! And it would behoove Dreamhack to take note of how that tournament's international base is growing, as well as GSL, now.

Nobody is bitching about it, its an observation that Dreamhack is doing some crazy shit, and it's really not doing anything for them by doing so.

Well, if you would know anything InCa and TOP decided to come themselfes because the didnt qualify for GSL. Thats why they wherent invited, cause they are Koreans and they want to play GSL. Dont you think they asked the whole Korean scene if they wanted to come? I think they did but got turned down since Koreans likes to stay in Korea.

You didnt read anything I wrote? They QUALIFIED in from random tournaments out there, lol. Maybe Sweden and Dreamhack are more for esports and giving new "pros" a chance aswell, just like GSL does with the qualifying. I dont see you whining on GSL "WHO IS THIS DUDE, WHY IS HE PLAYING IN GSL OMG, THE SHOULD INVITE SOME WELL KNOWN PLAYERS".. Etc. So, whats the problem, I really dont see it. Everyone had the same chance to qualify if they didnt get an invite, just like in GSL except there is no invite in GSL.

So, the only crazy thing is the bo1 in the group stage. Cant see why anything else is crazy since it gives everyone a chance to play on a big stage with a big price pool. More than most tournaments gives you.

MapleFracta, stop posting - your logic is completely warped and your answering your own questions + asking ones that could be answered if you had bothered to read up on how people actually qualify for this tournament. It's not your typical tournament, and it's not supposed to be.

Hmm i don't get it, why more Koreans didn't come here, there is like at least 5 really good Koreans pros who would have more then good shot at winning, wasnt it worth comming, it's quite nice prize money for first place?

And also, Dreamhack is the only european tour that has ever had Koreans in it. And all the players that are invited are expected to do well, Its probably just you that dosent have a clue about the scene or something. And its on Swedish ground, ofcourse there is gonna be Swedish players invited. Actually theres alot less Swedish players invited than it would be in any other tournament. If it was a US tour, there would be 99.9% americans that got invited. So stop bitching about it.

Untwist those panties and tuck in that skirt , buck up! you still got ActionJesus!

You sound more and more stupid by every post you make. The last time I checked your from Canada, which is located in America, thus yes you are an American.

As already stated, koreans have GSL Dreamhack cant wait until the GSL qualifiers are over before they decided who to invite I hope even you realize this.

You talk about promotion, well they did hold tournaments around europe before the actual tournament just to increase exposure. Fairly common way to do it, even organizations from NA used to do this, CPL for example.

Your last point is also invalid as the tournament format is so different so it's almost impossible to compare the two events. Everyone could go to MLG and play through the whole tournament, just like people can do at dreamhack.

Btw I hope you get banned for nasty insults...
Really, play for fun!

well i guess its better then no tourney to watch, but its Bo1 ugh so rediculous.

ActionJesus won an online qualify tournement so he never got the invite.
He WON it!

Glad to see White-Ra and MadFrog advancing... and TOP just completely dominated his group lol

That was a great game between DeMusliM and Fenix. I just love the big Ol' Terran Tank Battles.
I would also like to mention that Day[9] and d.Apollo are having great chemistry. Good Job Guys!

The red shirt (Crew/Stage) guy however *grin* .. his nerves are really getting to him, but he's bringing it - in his own special way -

What else? Stream is great quality - So, why aren't you watching

That should be the correct link. It's pretty annoying how no Dreamhack threads have the information in the OP. I had to dig around for the group results and then again for the brackets after groups.

Even though he lost, MaNa was such a fighter and made the crowd go bananas several times. As Day[9] said: fighting himself through the qualifiers all the way to the finals is just a cinderella story.

Got some interviews with Huk, Tyler, TLO, Demuslim, SjoW, Apollo, Day[9] and others. Coming soon to a podcast near you, as well as some pics from Dreamhack!

I was quite pissed att DH Crew, couldnt get in to the finals after 50 mins of queuing. I saw Adelscott also trying to get in, but DH Crew didn't know what to do so they told him he couldn't see the finals. Even though he was one of the players who made it quite far in the tourney.

It was full 10 minutes prior to the games starting. During the entire finals something like 10 people left. Fire safety laws regulate the amount of people can allow in the locale. Thus they could do nothing else. The same queues applied to the CS finals. Basically, you had to get there earlier.

The only way they could have gotten Adelscott in would have been through throwing somebody out, which would have been really popular.
