The cloth armor makes no sense but I don't see exactly what's so wrong with a dshield when the passive is still going to be in use against Poppy. It only makes sense to me if you plan on playing passively against the Poppy... but I don't know why you ever would. Her weakness is her terrible laning phase so playing passively with the dshield just seems like you're playing right into her hands.

The passive, the health regen, and the potion allows you to trade and sustain through it. It's safe and flexible as an opening item. Like what else would you start with on Renekton? Dblade is a risky and red-elixer is even riskier. Rejuv-pots-ward could work, but why would you over dshield in a Renekton vs Poppy lane? You're not going to say that the standard Renekton sunfire/sv build means you're going to play "defensive". I missed the first 10 minutes of the game so I dunno how exactly it is that Poppy destroyed Renekton so hard in lane but dshield was probably not a part of the problem. I'd open either some weird concoction w/ a ward so I could shove her under turret hard or dblade. Your goal should be continual harassment and damage on the poppy so she is forced to burn her flask at an uncomfortable rate. Make her miss cs or also spend mana to do so. The fact that without any jungle intervention (to my recollection) after the first few minutes poppy was pulling well ahead in cs is just something that should never happen.

Renekton's base damages are so high that you really can harass continually just with arpen marks and ad quints. Dshield doesn't stop you from doing that in pretty much any single lane. Renekton is one of my most played champs and so I have a lot of personal experience with this. Again, I missed the first 10 minutes so I dunno what happened in game, but dshield doesn't stop you from being aggressive at all. If anything, dshield allows you to be more aggressive than dblade because you are able to get out of tricky situations better and recover from fuckups. The passive from dshield gives you more sustain than dblade too, and this is a lot more pronounced on champs like Renekton that aren't auto reliant.

Congrats on enjoying a good champion. Your argument seems more focused on dshield as a broad starter than against poppy. Poppy is a unique laner and opponent. In most cases I have no qualms about starting dshield w/ pots as it is viable against most opponents. However, here it doesn't serve you as well rejuv/pot/ward. Poppy can be a lane threat early in some cases but going flask means it's virtually non-existent kill potential unless you take a crazy amount of excess damage. You want the ward to shove into her non-stop and force her to spend mana cs'ing where poppy doesn't excel under the turret because she's still easy to harass when she tries. Ultimately, however, this particular game had more to do with Bee being straight up outplayed hard enough that his item choice never would've made a difference.
