Don't you just hate how your computer starts to slow down after a while? The worst part is you have no idea why is it doing this? Most people would say maybe it's because of a virus, but sometime people just lack in maintaining it. It's true an old system might not work as well as a newer one, but there are ways to keep the computer going longer than usual. With a faster functioning computer your performance on starcraft1, 2, and other games will be a lot more smooth! This guide will show you how to do so in very simple methods.

Deleting things you don't need

Yes! delete all the junk you do not need anymore. Have a game you never touch anymore? Clean it up! Go to control panel->add/remove programs and uninstall it. Have music you don't listen to anymore? or movies you do not watch anymore? Delete it off you pc! If you spend 15 minute just looking through your files and programs and removing the ones you do not need, you will notice a big space difference. The more space you have the faster your computer speed will increase.

That's an example picture of removing a program!

Destroy spyware and virus!

Everyone hates virus and spyware crap. Get an antivirus..Avg is a good one, if you haven't already have one give that one a try. You may download it and install it. Run the scan and try to kill any virus that you already have on your computer. If you have never scanned before you might see a lot, but it's okay just get rid of it.

System Cleanup

Using the Disk Cleanup Utility to clean up all that junk. If you have never done this or haven't done it in a while it might take sometime, but be patient and wait it out. You will notice a big change in memory and computer performance. Another great thing to do is to cleanup all those leftover junk in your registry. Best to use a program such as CCleaner to cleanup cookies and non usable junk. Another great thing that surprised me in saving memory was the clearing "all old but recent system restore save points" woo that saved me a couple gigs. You can do this by looking in the other options part of the disk cleanup utility.

Using Msconfig

This next step will also speed up your computer booting speed. When you turn on your computer you might notice it gets slower overtime. This is a step that can make things a little bit faster, and increase performance. Go to Start-->run-->msconfig in there select Performance and Maintenance and then choose "Rearrange items on you hard disk..." and "Free up space on your hard disk." After that you want to go to startup section in msconfig and uncheck the programs that you do not need to be run during startup. With these steps done your computer will boot faster and also increase performance and speed.

Comments
These are just basic things that you should do from time to time. If there is anything else you would like to be placed on here please let me know and i will try my best to do so. Thanks again for viewing.

Nice and simple guide, but I do think you could possibly add links as to where to get some of the programs you mentioned.

Great guide, a lot of these are pretty self-explanatory but still useful for people don't know about this stuff.

pretty good guide for the basics but maybe you should include stuff like dusting your fans, its a pretty simple task to perform and can help improve computer performance a great deal (especially in dusty environments)

Hm, I can't find that in the newspost - where is it? It's not supposed to be there. The only contest with a restriction is the Ironman tournament (and we *might* change that, not sure yet).

Are you sure you are not confusing this with the Blizzcon contest?
