Hello all,

This is a call to all Hungarian, Russian and Czech members in the forums!

Some of you know me as (ex)MYM.Raven, I used to play pretty actively till the end of 2007.
Today, I'm working in the game industry as a Localization Coordinator for Cenega Service Team (http://www.cenega.com), which means I'm managing preparation of the various language versions of the new game for Europe market.

So what is it all about? We just received new project to prepare localized version of some top-tier game (FPS team shooter) into several languages, including Hungarian, Russian and Czech. The problem is that we need 1 Linguistic Tester for each of these languages to test the game, here in Poland (Warsaw, capital), on-site, ready to test our game for 1 month.

I think this is a nice opportunity to try it out in the game industry (also you can try the game before its official release) and have a trip to Poland this summer. And having QA Tester experience, I think people from our gaming community fit really well to this sort of job, that's why I'm posting it here.

Some details about the contract:
- we offer 1-month contract, starting next week (if tester is able come, he can start the job on Monday)
- we pay all travel costs to Warsaw and back to the home
- we pay all city communication costs
- we arrange and pay the quarters (most likely one room for Russian, Hungarian and Czech testers)
- we offer a salary of 1000€ for 1 month of job (9.00 AM to 5.00 PM, Monday-Friday, in Cenega Localization Centre, in our QA Lab - I'm working here too)

Don't hesitate to contact me, if you would like to know more about this job

Contact details:
mail: mp at cenega dot com or raven at cenega dot com
MSN: qiangduo47 at hotmail dot com
or via PM here at TL.net

To the admins: I hope this sort of announcement is not really against the rules - if it is, please let me know / close it

All the best,
Maciej "Raven" Polak

Hehe, no need at the moment, but actually we are developing very, very fast lately so if there is native English (UK or US) / French / Italian / German / Spanish (Europe continental Spanish) interested in getting pernament job here in Warsaw Poland in our Localization Centre, feel free to contact me as well :-)

Ah, and I've just got the information that most likely this CZ / RU / HU testing project will delay a little bit, so it won't start this Monday (still it gonna be next week most likely).

Cheers,
Raven

Well, it is about job in Europe - Poland - Warsaw only (Cenega office is here) but for Mexico as well as the other Latin America countries I think there could be a problem with all the differences between the Latin Spanish and continental (European) Spanish. Since we are working on the Spanish games for European game market, it is extremely important to correct all the linguistic bugs according to continental Spanish grammar/vocabulary. Assuming, that you've never been in Spain, I think that would be an issue for you, right?

Raven

Hehe, I'm Russian, live in Hungary, speak both fluently, and wouldn't even need a visa to go to Poland.

But the suggested salary would actually make me lose a lot more by abandoning my current job, so I can't go. Would it have been exactly 1 year ago, I would have jumped at the opportunity in a heartbeat, but alas... :/

No problem mate, let me explain it to you:

In QA (for Quality Assurance) Lab, there is a lot of different tests to do, depending on the game and stage of the project:

1. Functionality tests - these are done in the very early stage of the game development, to find all the errors in overall functionality of the game. Testers have to follow and repeat a lot of bug-cases (scenarios) in order to find bugs crashing the game, engine, graphics, mechanics, etc.

2. Focus tests - this stage is to balance the game difficulty wise, so you know, game is playable (not too hard in the beginning / on the easy levels, not too easy at the other hand, etc.)

3. Balance tests - this is the main reason for Blizzard to delay our beloved title release for another year So yes, basically balance tests are for multiplayer mode of the game, to make it as balanced as it is possible.

4. Linguistic tests - for each language version of the game, there are always linguistic tests to look for following bugs: grammar, mispelling, too long strings, font problems, subtitles/audio consistency, wrong context, etc. etc. So this is all about the text/audio content in game (as well as in manual, readme, additional tools attached for the game, etc.) - developer wants to check it before the release.

For the job I mentioned, it would be no.4 (linguistic tests), that's why we require the native language skills from our testers for each language.

Few words about the testers workflow: For each sort of the tests, job is divided into testing rounds. Each testing round is like playing the whole game (current build version of the game), checking all the content or repeating all the scenarios and report them (with bugtracker client) in order to prepare so called Bug Report. Then developer is trying to fix all the bugs and prepares new build (version) of the game. Then another testing round comes, this time you have to reproduce all the old bugs and see if they are fixed and look for the new bugs eventually. Finally, after several testing rounds (usually 3), so-called Master Candidate comes and testers have to check if it is ready for release (if there is still some major bug to fix). This is where QA Lab's job finishes in the development / localization project.

I hope it was any helpful and now you have an idea how this job looks like :-)

Cheers,
Raven

Thanks for the info. I'm less ignorant now, although i still lack of knowlege in game testing ^^.
Nevertheless i think that the wage is a bit low for Western Europeans.

Well, the wage in QA always depends on native language. 1000€ is not really small wage in Poland - Junior Polish linguistic testers receive like 400-500€ / month I think average in the market... And keeping in mind that you will have your trip, communication and quarters paid, this is not small money :-) At the other hand, the EFIGS (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish) natives have higher salaries for sure.

Cheers,
Raven

P.S. Thanks all you guys for memory about my Terran :-) Who knows, maybe kimchi power awakes one more time before SC2 release ^^.
