When I was ~8 years old the same thing happened to me its just that it was a chair that smashed my toe and it was my big toe. After a few weeks it dropped off and a new toe nail grew back. The only problem I had was that the "new" toe nail looked a little weird ( thicker ) than the normal one for a little while but its normal now.
When the origninal nail dropped off the other nail was 3/4 grown already but I'm not sure how it will be in your case.

I have an in grown toenail right now, I fucked it up skating without shoes out (smart i know), and it's been gushing blood for like 5 months. It got infected and i've gone to the doctor. I was told to soak it in warm water, and i put some crak on it called Mupirocin, and it is supposed to help. It didn't so I'm going to get my nail removed (drilled into my toe, ouch) on monday.
