![]() Doing some analysis instead of just posting the album... Lil Wayne at his so-far peak, there are so many listenable and fun songs on here. His wordplay and flowing style are fully evident here. It starts with Tha Mobb which is just 5 minutes of pure hype straight up, no break, no chorus, building and building on a fun beat, a great way to start. Then it moves into Fly In, the first part of the centerpiece of the album, the Fly In/Carter II/Fly Out series which is 3 quick songs spread across the album with the same beat, and it's a fantastic one, the songs are pretty much the best ones. Money on My Mind continues the momentum although goes a tiny bit too long. But fuck bitches, get money. And by the end your excitement is just building for Fireman, which is pure excitement, delivers as advertised. He plays with the heat metaphor and concept in different interesting ways. This is the first significant block of the album, which is sort of broken off by Mo Fire, which does not deliver as advertised and then a skit. Best Rapper Alive serves as the hype opening to the next phase which is not the best but passable, complete with some building ah ah ah ah background vocals that give it a stadium/huge audience feel. Fun enough. The following are decent enough but not highlights, Lock & Load (feat. Kurupt) and Oh No (the looping vocal of the title is memorable), and the obligatory get the ladies slow groove track, Grown Man, which is not the worst of its kind I've heard but nothing special either. Hit Em Up (dunno how it's supposed to be related to 2pac's) is a great re-kindling, the beat is tense and tight. I haven't really been making special notes about his delivery and skill across songs because it's basically uniformly excellent here unless otherwise mentioned. This goes right into Carter II, signaling we are into the heart of the material and the best part, which is an accurate assessment. His inflection on this beat has got this desperate edge that really makes it (especially later on Fly Out), and the beat feels like it's telling the related story. Hustler Musik is really laid back and great to chill to. Receipt is one of the best songs here, it's about love, but done his way and with style. Shooter with Robin Thicke also works fantastically, and such an odd, inspired pairing it is. The way it builds to Weezy's opening is magnificent, and he comes in so softly but solidly with his "So many doubt cause I come from the South, but when I open my mouth all bullets come out." Then it just continues adding and building till it's just a smooth (and violent at the same time) party. Weezy Baby has a beat and hook that stick despite not being that remarkable of a song, and the rest is mostly forgettable, up until the last song, the final and best piece of the trilogy, Fly Out. It's the perfect cap for the album. It has impeccable flow, the tone conveys total hunger, signaling he's in his prime. Listen to his use of repetition here, and how he weaves the rhyming words into it. This song is absolutely one of the best pure segments of flow and lyricism I've heard. Listen to this if you want to know what people see in him. Highlights: Tha Mobb Fly In Fireman Carter II Hustler Musik Receipt Shooter Fly Out Samples: + Show Spoiler + "I'm eatin' but I got a tapeworm in my tummy..." | ||
