The last words of Thích Quảng Đức before his self-immolation were documented in a letter he had left:
Before closing my eyes and moving towards the vision of the Buddha, I respectfully plead to President Ngo Dinh Diem to take a mind of compassion towards the people of the nation and implement religious equality to maintain the strength of the homeland eternally. I call the venerables, reverends, members of the sangha and the lay Buddhists to organise in solidarity to make sacrifices to protect Buddhism.

David Halberstam wrote:
I was to see that sight again, but once was enough. Flames were coming from a human being; his body was slowly withering and shriveling up, his head blackening and charring. In the air was the smell of burning human flesh; human beings burn surprisingly quickly. Behind me I could hear the sobbing of the Vietnamese who were now gathering. I was too shocked to cry, too confused to take notes or ask questions, too bewildered to even think... As he burned he never moved a muscle, never uttered a sound, his outward composure in sharp contrast to the wailing people around him.

Discovered about Jesse Owen and Lunz's friendship thx to this thread.

I knew the child + vulture pic but didnt know the man who took the picture let that child die and commited suicide some months after...

I think hidden_motives missed the point, theres a monthly wallpaper thread for pics as such.

So let's share pictures that make us take a step back. Either motivationally, emotionally, etc... They can be amazing works of art of rainbows and butterflies or pictures of some of the worst times in human history to remind us that we are all human.

The one image I vividly remember from studying American history. It's not of an event as significant as some of the other ones in this thread perhaps, but man, it does give perspective when you realize what you're looking at.

This one is a bit more self-explanatory.

Aye. When I first saw it I thought he was standing or shoes or something, kind of made me go "Oh shit" when I realized he was standing on a mountain of skulls. Partly because there's a fucking lot, but also gave some perspective on just what length the white men went to kill Indians. It was hardly a small buffalo hunt.

Afghan's Mona Lisa. Her picture, titled "Afghan Girl", appeared on the June 1985 cover of National Geographic. The image of her face, with a red scarf draped loosely over her head and with her piercing sea-green eyes staring directly into the camera, became a symbol both of the 1980s Afghan conflict and of the refugee situation worldwide.

Travis:

It's American buffalo (bison) skulls. They were the most numerous herd animal on earth before they were almost hunted to extinction during the 1800's in the course of the US's expansion west.

Since then their numbers have rebounded through regulation. I live in Montana so I can see buffalo all the time. Buffalo burgers are actually quite tasty too btw! ^.^

Hey, where did those three pictures come from? Did someone try to pass them off as soldiers putting a guy to a guy's head, or.... Which way where they edited?

Vietcong prisoner about to be shot

I believe that the picture was not taken as he was about to be shot, but rather at the very moment the bullet went through his head.

I don't really like that picture (but that's just my own, personal, opinion) ; upon seeing you can't really help but think the "bad" guy is the one holding the gun. But most people would have did the same thing he did if placed in that situation : the Vietcong was part of a "revenge squad" that had murdered dozens of civilians earlier on.

Anyways, here's my contribution to this thread :
