Well to be fair it doesn't take "a large amount of intelligence" to start using any character.

Ryu is great to learn fundamentals and basics but if you don't like him when you play try something else. At this level though it's all about mastering the character. Entry level difficulty has nothing to do with it why people play Ryu.
