I only came into the Pro BW Scene around 2008, just after Savior's fall at the hands of Bisu... I've constantly heard a lot of how Savior revolutionize this and genius that, but I've never had a view on the circumstance that allowed him to become brilliant. Only after reading this article had I now have an ounce of his brilliance...

Excellent article. I just read this and i want to apply this kind of thinking to my SC2 zerg play. Inspiring stuff haha. Also SC2 and BW are both great games. Give SC2 time and it will breed epic games just like the BW. Either way we all love the same exciting gameplay :D. Again great writeup.

I'm not a huge broodwar follower, but this really caught my eye. Even in the sc2 day in age, one can still get a lot of meaningful stuff out of this article. Great read ver. Kudos to you

He truly was a joy and a pleasure to watch. Every game for years was pure zerg bliss. I am beyond happy with this article, and despite the tragic events he took part in, he will always remain one of the best.

Thanks for the great write up Ver

Fucking amazing. Holy shit, I feel more inspired than ever before to play and watch StarCraft knowing that we as gamers have such gods of war existing among us. Wow, how I wish I could have been there to see Savior play. His matches must have been like a fucking symphony...The Maestro indeed.

I'm so proud, and yet my heart is torn in two. For all the ingenuity he has brought to this game, my heart struggles to look past his corrupt, darker side.

Wow, I got so many chills reading this article. Very nice, and I am really sad that I couldn't have been around during Savior's time.

Savior vs Oov on Ride of the Valkyries and Savior vs Iris on Neo-Arkanoid are two of my all-time favorite Broodwar games. Both games were so epic.

I know all the hype is about BW players owning the current sc2 top tier if they made the switch. However, I highly doubt that even if your good at BW, its not gonna be a walk in the park to get to the top.

Sad to see some really talented players falling into the wrong hands

No doubt Savior was a very good player, but all the wins vs Top Terrans were long after their Prime. It can't really be compared in my opinion.

Not really, it was Savior that created a revolution in Zerg play and rolled Oov and caused his decline much like how Bisu rolled Savior.

Nada who peaked after Oov still was also consistently winning grand finals. Both were very much in their prime.

You also simply can't say they were past their prime. Then Terrans were smashing Zergs with incredibly high win rates, what's amazing is their win-rate against other Zerg would be less than their loss rate against Savior.

Olso if im not mistaken when that superfight vs Nada occurred Nada's TvZ was considered as the best in the world!!!

I may be wrong here, I'm just an uneducated latecomer to BW, but isn't Jaedong the Zerg superstar?
This is such a teary-eyed rose-tinted homage, it sounds ridiculous.

Savior was a tactical and strategic genius, if they peaked at the same time, Savior would have been the more dominant player in ZvT/ZvP even with half the mechanics.

Savior to Effort was Oov to Fantasy. A lot of the brains behind Efforts style came from Savior. But Savior was still much better at it. Just look at how Effort dismantled Flash in the OSL Grand Final even though a week later Flash 3:0'd Jaedong with ease in the MSL Grand Final. Actually just look at how many times Effort has completely outsmarted Flash, completely outsmarting the supposed strategic genius is a crazy feat.

The same thing happened when Savior was in his peak. Oov was the "cheater terran" a strategic mastermind, and Nada "the genius terran", and Savior just picked them apart at their own game.

Many of Saviors strategies have been copied by other Zergs, including Jaedong.

Saviors amazing feat stems from being a god in a period of the Zerg dark ages. Jaedong came after this, where several Zergs were doing well anyway. Not to take any thing away from Jaedong though, but Jaedong is the complete opposite player, a mechanical aggressive beast.

I don't know much about Tennis but maybe you could compare Savior to Federer, and Jaedong to Nadal? Savior won with finesse, where as Jaedong won with technique.

I did not follow the BW scene at all, but this article certainly caught my attention and I ended up reading it all! Very very very well written, congratulations to the author and to teamliquid as well for putting this up.

That's actually a great comparison. I wasn't around during Savior's time, but watching him dismantle Nada/oov is exactly like how Federer just slapped around everyone. Then the Nadal/Jaedong just being pure athleticism/mechanics is spot on haha

I've been dying to read this and I finally found some time to read through the article. Considering Savior was my favorite player I can say this is one of my favorite articles ever written here. Truly amazing depth and insight into the man who found a need for the word Bonjwa. Even though Savior is banned from pro gaming now, even seeing him play in his last few months was heart breaking, you could tell he didn't have the same fierce unbeatable eye of the tiger he did back then. I don't blame people for being mad at him but you can't change history and you certainly cannot take away from all that he accomplished. Amazing article, truely, thank you for all those involved.
Nothing to it but to do it.

An article that Savior so very much deserved.

Being a rather biased protoss fan, if you asked me who was the best sc player ever, I wish I could say Nalra or Reach or Stork or Bisu, but I would be lying.

Savior in his prime was absolutely terrifying.

I never understood exactly what was happening but I knew that when I saw him play, something amazing was going on. What was mind boggling was his low 250 apm yet still he was 3 seconds ahead of everyone at every curve and every fight and every timing. Nearly every game he would send his overlord the right direction and it was just unreal watching him play all the top players. That was the time when if Savior played it wasn't a matter of IF Savior would win but HOW Savior would win.

So very sad that he did what he did, but like the article said, let's keep that topic separate from his skill in the game.

Very big thanks for this write-up. I am really looking forward to part 2.
Yea that looks just like Kang Min... amazing game sense... and uses mind games well, but has the micro of a washed up progamer.

Savior got me into progaming. I was in korea, flipping through channels and I just had to stop when I watched him play. Man, his games were just so captivating. I will always remember Savior with fondness, regardless of mistakes he made more recently.. This was a much deserved article so that we may remember both the good and bad of Ma Bonjwa.
