Why? Because its nerdy? And coming from someone with a RZA quote as their sig. Lol, RZA and Wu-Tang in general love comic books, a long time bastion of nerdom. Arguable nerdier than video games.

Here's a direct quote from RZA about Bobby Digital: "Partying, bullshitting, going crazy, chasing women, taking drugs. At the same time, I would mix in my love for comic books."

One of the things that makes hiphop so interesting is how deeply embedded in modern culture. A good rapper can twist almost anything into a badass rhyme, why not eSports/video game references?

Didn't listen to the track, because a mention of Starcraft in a rap song is pretty pathetic (which is the answer to your question "Why not?"). Just listened to it and he doesn't say "medivac terran, earthbound hellion", he says "been a veteran, earthboud hellion". Hellion's a normal word in case you forgot. I think some Eminem line goes like this "little hellions, feeling rebellious, embarrassed their parents still listen to Elvis" or something along those lines - it isn't a SC reference neither.

I think its pretty pathetic that you wouldn't even give the song a listen at first, and you went into it hating it already. Rappers rap about what they like, and if it WAS a starcraft line who gives a shit? You're really going to not listen to an entire song because of one line where they talk about a hobby, thats pretty damn pathetic honestly. I'd hate to listen to music with you anywhere if everything has to be serious all the time, what a bore.

Wu-tang are one of the all time great nerdy rap group.

Constant references to comic books and kung fu movies, plus an emphasis on over the top lyrical battle raps, etc

we need more video game references in rap, not less

@MassHysteria
The rest of the album has a lot of songs on it that are better than The Recipe and Swimming Pools imo. I'm loving the shit out of this album currently.

Looks like I hit a nerve for some people here. Was to be expected on a Starcraft forum, but really, there's quite a big difference between seeking spiritual advice from old kung fu flicks (36 chambers is a great movie btw) and referencing a video game that consumes a shitload of time to be good at and has no intrinsic value. If you don't see that then I don't know what to tell you. I don't play video games so it's easy for me to hate on it, my self esteem is not attached to it.
You're really going to not listen to an entire song because of one line

Yep, if that line would have been "I think Lil Wayne is a dope rapper" then I wouldn't listen to the song either and instantly regard everything they ever created as garbage. You can't be into rap like this

Magna Carta Holy Grail is out! (for those with Samsung phones/don't mind downloading illegally).

On the third song and loving it so far. Both beats were great and I loved JT on the hook on the first one.

Come on, GFK had his whole moniker based on a comic book character while featuring on Mobb Deep albums. Why couldn't you appreciate old Mobb Deep while appreciating a random line in a totally different song? Especially on an album like Run the Jewels where the themes just bounce and it doesn't have much seriousness in it. Run the Jewels is definately worth listening though.

Let's post some new Wu-Tang while on it.

Ok first things first, Weezy is dope as fuck. He has an insane ~4 year from run from Carter II through to No Ceilings where he was on top of hiphop. In terms of output, sales and critical reception, ignoring his influence during that period is just foolish. You don't have to like him, but the dude is earned his place. Oh and he's 30. Like right now. 30. His debut at 18 y/o went platinum. For someone with his credentials, 30 is young as fuck. Not even that big a fan, his output in recent years is kinda depressing, but this trend which finds some honour in cheap shots is lame as fuck.

What is intrinsic value? Because last time I checked, all games, movies, music are simply a mix of different wavelengths right? 'Value' is derived from the human response to these things. We value things we find entertaining, moving, educational etcetc. Starcraft happens to fall within the bounds of things humans appreciate, therefore it is given value within our society. You don't have to value it, but someone does and that is significant. Now with that in mind, what is so wrong about referencing a video game over a movie, song or book to construct a metaphor? The only thing that should concern anyone is whether its a hot line or not.

The dude with the RZA signature, claiming video games are somehow off the 'acceptable' reference list when Wu-Tang draws a huge amount of material from a culture who's persona in the public eye is this guy. You gotta be kidding me.

Oh but you posted Mobb Deep so you hard right? Mobb Deep, Ballers or ballerinas? Top lel.

Yea, you shook.

You do realize Kendrick likes Lil Wayne? As does most probably a huge amount of your other favorite modern rappers.

@Dali
Yea man, you got that shit right, right? Justin Bieber is also dope as fuck, he's an insane 4 years old and in terms of output, sales and critical reception there's just no matching him. You don't have to like him, but he definitely earned his place, ignoring his influence is nothing but pure ignorance.
And if you can't grasp the concept of intrinsic value and don't know where to draw the line between finding a meaning in south east culture and a video game, between relating to some comic books that got you goin thru your childhood when you grew up in the hood and couldn't afford anything else and a 2012 video game surrounded by an entire weaboo culture played by privileged white kids then you're beyond fucking help - might as well listen to lil wayne in that case but I can see you already clearly embraced that circumstance.
What's so wrong about referencing Starcraft II in a fucking rap song? How about 'keeping it real'? Ever heard that phrase? Real MCs don't make music for privileged white kids who never had to struggle in their entire lives, they make music kids in the hood can relate to. You don't even seem to know what rap is all about so don't get all mad when someone doesn't have love for your wack sell out pop singers.
"cuz last time I checked it was a mix of different wavelengths hue hue :D so clever comment :DD" This is exactly why TL has one of the worst communities I've ever seen. The amount of pure circle jerk on this forum is ridiculous. Everybody gets a hard on over the pseudo intellectual shit they spew all day, then to top it off when a so called 'progamer' posts they fucking ejaculate right onto their monitors, but when you don't want to be part of this phony shit that's going on in almost every thread moderators jump in to preserve the ignorance of this forum with completely biased policy. They think they some fucking gods or something pretending they can judge me on some shit I type that isn't even remotely related to Starcraft and step completely out of their zone like the last warning I drew in the weightlifting thread. The only proper response to that is to burst out in laughter and be happy you'll never be one of all of this. The same response I had after your first line.

And what are we even arguing about? False information spread by a Canadian incapable of understanding English lyrics. If those rappers agreed with the statement that a SC reference would be a good idea or dope or whatever then there would have been one in that fucking track, but guess what? There wasn't. That's because the only guys who'll agree with this statement are on this very forum. Now go back to jerking off to your progamer gods cuz ain't no such things as halfway crooks.

And to get back on topic:
Last week I seen Grandmaster Flash and Mobb deep live, it was ridiculously good. Today in one week I'll see KRS One live (if you don't know him by now I doubt you'll ever know him), really looking forward to that. Some time in August I'll see Kendrick Lamar live and probably Wu Tang, too. Gonna be dope.

Yeah Liquid Swords is a great album.

I have boring taste in Hip Hop / Rap generally though. I don't really listen to anything off the grid. Just the classics for me.

I've just seen this thread, skimming over it I see a lot of classics being posted, I'm proud of you Team Liquid.

I haven't seen his name skimming through the first few pages so maybe nobody cares but Jay-Z's new album just leaked. I'm only on the first track so I've got no idea if it's any good or not but when Jay-Z is at his best he's one of the greatest so here's hoping.
