Engineering grad students just sit in libraries for 20 hours a day.

Grad students in theoretical computer science are sometimes a little nerdy but most of them I got to know are very friendly, straightforward and open people. Maybe you should change the subject or try to socialize more with science grad students.

Just finished:

Written in second person. Pretty funny, and a short read. Ending is not what I expected though, and I'm not sure what to make of it.
The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

I felt the exact same way at first. Not sure if things changed or I just adjusted to it.

Guns, Germs, and Steel complements quite nicely to my addiction to Civilization V while the Visual Group Theory gives me a different perspective as I study more into Abstract algebra

Guns, Germs, and Steel was a nice book, but it is really outdated. After you finish the book, read The Origins of Political Order by Francis Fukuyama. Since you like Civilization, I think you will enjoy this book even more :D

Will do ^_^; I'm aware it's been a while since Guns, Germs, and Steel was published. I figured since the book talks about 13,000 years+ of human development, I figure much of it hasn't changed between 1997 and 2013.

I just realized I am reading a book that has the following description written on the cover:
- "A FANTASY SERIES FOR HIP, SMART PEOPLE, EVEN THOSE WHO DON'T READ FANTASY."

I feel like I've been verbally assaulted

Anyone to take a guess which book?

Sounds like obnoxious description of either Kingkiller or Song of Ice and Fire. Gonna go with the latter cause the former is less famous.

"A Feast For Crows" so you're correct.

Also on the same cover:
"THE AMERICAN TOLKIEN."
Edit: Yes the use capitalized letters.

I feel like Death in Venice's best part was that I want to reread Plato's Phaedrus.
Back to Capital now I guess, alas I'm ill at the moment, I won't go fast :/

Given the fact that his agenda seems to be to make language more precise and point out it's flaw and limitations I am very confused right now : (

Finished A Dance With Dragons. (spoiler : George RR Martin : FUCK YOU. Sincerely.)
Problem : I'm 2 weeks into a 4months business trip, and from december to february I will have NOTHING to do except read (and work), being in a refugee camp, and I'm already out of books. T_T

Any good fantasy series, not black and white (Eddings I despise you), more like the Death Gate cycle (or GoT) ?
Is the Wheel of Time worth it ? (Yeah i'll have THAT much time)

man, reading the House of Night series as a 19-year old male feels like a huge guilty pleasure.

I bought How Starbucks Saved My Life and Bear Grylls' autobiography yesterday though, does that make up for my lack of manliness?

I read the majority of the Wheel of Time series a long time ago. I think the series is quite okay as long as you don't expect an intellectual challenge, as the series is quite 'light' and not as complex as ASOIAF.

The First Law trilogy is really good, as long as you don't have a problem of reading point of view characters that you can't really sympathize with. But if you're a fan of darker fantasy written in a nice self-ironic/cynical style you're probably gonna like the series a lot.

The Jim Butcher novels are also fast-paced and a lot of fun, but of course in a different category than GRRM and Abercrombie.

I'm not really in a camp yet :D just read it for the first time and I'll probably need to read it a few times more. If you start to get what he's really talking about the book offers quite a lot i think , but i don't like that it's basically written like a calculus-script as he is kind of inventing his own school of thought just on the fly, which makes it really hard to grasp.

Agreed with all of those except Malazan (read all of them except TLPQ, dropped Malaz on third book).

Also anything by Brandon Sanderson, specially Mistborn.

I'm now reading Brent Weeks. Finished one of his triologies a while ago and it was pretty good.
