Lord of Destruction is still the best action RPG on the market and regularly retails along with D2 vanilla for 40 dollars. You can't say that about any other game from 10 years ago inside the same genre except for some point and click adventure games. You are absolutely correct, Diablo 2 is a much better MMO than Diablo 1 was. In any case, I do agree that overall D2 is much better in terms of gameplay mechanics compared to D1. However, for a lot of people D2 was a disappointment, in that it did away with a lot of things that made D1 what it was, including the atmosphere, the original lore, the roguelike mechanics, etc. D1 was actually very much a simplified roguelike in real-time with great music and art design. In terms of more recent games, it was much more like Dark Souls thematically, than like D2. If you could have a game with D2's mechanics and D1's atmosphere and focus, I'd be all for it. But I don't think D3 is that game. So far playing the beta, I feel that, disregarding graphical style, which is obviously different (although from there to childish is an exaggeration imo), D3 feels A LOT closer to D1 than D2 was. I'm one of the people who played D2 for the longest time, but were actually dissapointed by it. I always felt that, relative to each game's times, D1 was far superior to D2 in every aspect.
D2 wasn't bad, it was a great game, but it was rather bland in comparison to D1, it felt less epic, despite the story. It was also a lot easier, and it lacked some of the charm that made, imo, D1 great. One of the big similarities I see between D1 and D3 is the constant action. I feel that in D2 I had to run huge expanses to find enemies to kill, it just made it boring sometimes. The stamina bar was also most likely the worst addition to the game, I'm SO DAMN GLAD they took it away now, it just cut from the action. I remember my most wanted shrine was stamina lol.
I can't really explain it completely, as I feel there's a lot of subjectivity behind this opinion, but I feel D2 was a step too far away from the original, it went too far with the math, tried to make it too complex. D3 looks a lot simpler, while it seems likely is will continue to be very customizable. I like it, I'm enjoying the beta thoroughly, despite the small amount of content.
I also insist, people saying D2 was dark and gothic. I dunno, I just don't see it. It always was just about the killing. Atmosphere wasn't dark at all, I've never thought of the Diablo series like that. D1's intro was a bit spooky and that's about it.

Diablo 2 had a stamina bar because Diablo 2 had the ability to run. Diablo 1 you only had walking.
So D2 didnt add stamina. They added a running mechanic.

So D2 didnt add stamina. They added a running mechanic. It still slowed down the pace of the game. Walking speed in D1 was decent considering separation between enemies and size of the maps. Walking speed in D2 was terrible. Be it adding a stamina bar or a running mechanic, it was still horrible, and I'm glad they ditched it.

Hot damn yes. That trailer was SICK. I always wondered why after the Final Fantasy movie nothing ever came out again that was like that. I absolutely loved it... did it tank? :<

Final Fantasy Spirits within tanked hardcore because it was not very good.
Advent Children, which actually was very good, was thusly never released in the United States or much of the western world.
No one else gives a shit to make anything that looks good. All we get is cheapass Shrek and Toy Story animation over and over.
I guess Avatar? I mean that had live action actors.

Anyone who really says that D3 feels darker and has more of a horror feel to it is only saying that because of the blood. D2 was way better so far just comparing Act 1 to Act 1.

Compare the two desert acts. D3 desert act is exactly what D2 desert should have been.

Yea it is quite odd. D2 you just go around owning shit and having fun. D3 you go around owning shit and having fun. What is this horror people keep speaking about?

Gimmie the game, now Blizzard! :D
I too hope they revert the atomosphere back to a more D1 kinda style...The music and the levels just felt abit darker
Loved that you went further and further down in d1 but in d2 you just go all over the place...From a totally lit desert to a jungle that was incredible hard for me to find the way around in and in arc 5 you just went to a cold place in the north. Of course they have to mix it up, but still : )
It seems to be a trend in Blizzard games. Diablo 1 was darker than D2. Warcraft 2 was darker than Warcraft 3. Have to wait and see what happens in D3 and SC2 when the expansions are released! =)

Such a great cinematic. At first I was like "WOW, this is like nothing we have seen from Blizzard before", and then it cuts to Cain, good old Cain... Damn he really looks old in that cinematic though. And weird to see how he ended up under the cathedral, I mean, I don't think I saw a huge hole in it last time I played the beta, will definitely be looking for it next time I play through.
Leah annoys me as a character too, I really hope she dies/turns evil at some point.
And why has this turned into a d3/d2/d1 thread btw? Games change and I'm glad for that, if you don't think Blizzard will learn from their mistakes from earlier games then you are pretty stupid. If you love d2, play d2, if you love d1, play d1... This is d3, if you are expecting them to go back and make it the same as an earlier game, then you will be very disappointed.

D2 is 10+ years old, games evolve, I doubt anyone can name one genre of games that have stayed completely the same with no changes, FPS, RPG, RTS etc
As for the opening cinematic, I loved it but was somewhat dishearted by no release date, I'm really liking the feeling it's giving

Also, the meteor is obviously Diablo. I mean, who else would be crashing the old Tristram church than him? Obviously Diablo? Really? You are so sure that your willing to bet money on it? It could be any one of the Archangels of The Angiris Council, or one of the lesser evils. Hell, it may not even be a living being at all, it could be the Black Soulstone or something else entirely. I'd like to know how a flaming meteor creating a fiery pit turns into a soothing blue glow in the game.

I dont see that at all. Act 1 of D2 did NOT feel that dark to me at all. D3 looks a little better, but I don't think blizz will ever be able to(or maybe not want to?) re-create the mood and atmosphere of D1
