This guy professes ignorance and asks a question. You respond to him by bashing him for his self proclaimed ignorance to France, fail to address his question, then edit your post to bash his knowledge in general (something you had no reason to do). You were rude, there was no error his wording imo. I went on and gave a few examples of things that Americans could want from France - cultural and political things. His question was answered. Still, I support my "opinion" that his wording suggested that he couldn't fathom France having anything desirable for any Americans ever. That said, I demoted my stance to "opinion" because it seems like a lot of people are opposed to it. Maybe I just can't read English even though I write better than most Americans.

Exactly, were allied. Then we attacked them and they surrendered and joined us. Same thing happened in WW1 as well. Surrendering when your country is overrun is pretty different from surrendering the moment you are attacked and joining the enemy team.

"If it wasn't for _______" regarding any of the world wars is stupid. You could just as easily say "If it wasn't for France, the USA wouldn't exist." It's a passive aggressive oversimplification to make one side seem overly generous, when in reality every side contributes to one another.

Im sorry, but I honestly cannot see how that line is stupid. France had been conquered and we (Britain) were in no position to fight Germany on the ground. If Germany didn't invade Russia and the USA didn't get involved, I have a feeling that Hitler would have tried to make everyone under German rule speak the German language as he was trying to make a Germanic Empire. Am I wrong? Also, about the jokes. That was light hearted banter, nothing more.

This has only gotten worse as the French government had a somewhat contentious attitude toward the US during the Cold War. France and the US are allies but they disagree greatly on opinions toward the shape of society, foreign policy, etc. Even today, France is good at pointing out that Americans claim to be this great, altruistic nation, but almost everything they do is self-serving, bull-headed, and sometimes not good for the global community. They're not always right, but I think it's a good thing to have allies like that.
