I know there are a number of tech help threads on the forums asking for particular recommendations or tips when trying to upgrade or fix a computer to be able to run Starcraft 2. I am also aware of the fact that the stability and efficiency with which the game runs in not solely dependent on the rig itself, but also on how well the game is coded and debugged. With that said, I am curious if any technologically inclined members of Team Liquid could recommend or put together an optimized rig, whose sole purpose is managing the full spectrum of needs the Starcraft 2 program could be expected to demand.

I am wondering of the community would be willing to come together to try and define a standardized rig for playing Stacraft 2.

One of the hurdles non PC gamers have is dealing the barrier in technological know how from the convenience of console gaming to the details of computer gaming. Also, a lot of PC gamers looking to upgrade or develop a rig don't really know where to benchmark their tech in terms of what they need to play the game up to their specifications. So I thought we could compile a list of recommended parts currently available that would allow a person to play Starcraft 2 in all its facets.

Obviously technology improves and over time the capabilities of computer parts available will increase alongside it. But the requirements to play Starcraft 2 will still remain the same. And the cost to run it in a truly optimized environment will ultimately decrease over time. So compiling a functioning list now could provide a constant template for future gamers to build in order to be able to fully appreciate the game and not wonder "Can I run it" or "How well can I run it?"

Another potential issue it that compatibility between parts possibly can vary with patching or a different future combination maybe better and provide an even more stable experience. In this case I would recommend a cost benefit analysis be temporarily spoiler tagged until it reaches a point were you cannot justify not going with the "new" set-up.

I am not the most technically capable person in the world, and I am typing this on a prefabricated "gaming" laptop which I probably paid too much for and received too little. But I know there is a huge fountain of knowledge here that could provide a productive tool for helping new and old members, while at the same time giving a little structure and consistency to the truly competitive players in the scene.

I could compile the agreed upon parts list in the OP, as well as the suggested parts. I suppose pricing would come last once the "best" standard is collected, unless it factors in significantly to the difference in opinion of the two parts.

I would also ask that you be a bit idealistic with respect to parts choice, but make sure that its not just some random dream machine, but instead conforms to the optimal functional standards of Starcraft 2. Also, if the community is so inclined, we could do a Brood War version for kicks. If you have any technical suggestions with parts or if I missed a glaring issue in my request or criteria don't hesitate to post.

(One last thing, detail is good. Unless it honestly can have zero impact on the performance of the game, don't hesitate to point out of label a component.)

The "dual core 2.4ghz processor" part isn't clear... They could mean a pentium D ( and that'd fulfill the requirement... ) or an i3-2100... ( which would also fulfill the requirement... ) the latter being a much better architecture

Well I am not thinking that the recommended system requirements are necessarily optimized, so I was thinking of going off the communities experience with different parts and different rigs as well their computer know how to "Forumulate" (:D) the desired computer.

I saw that, but while extremely well made and informative, it is a general overview of computer building. What I am proposing is a standard rig designed to be able to run SC2 at all levels. I understand PC gamers play a wide array of games, but I thought a pre-compiled parts list for a competitive player to be linked to or shown would be a useful tool to have in order to make it easier for people who are not as PC inclined.

If this post in better in tech support, obviously move it at your own discretion. But I thought this type of computer question was based enough around Starcraft 2 to warrant its place here, as well as probably get spotted by more people.

I thought this could be a nice creative project with useful applications for the community at large. As well as address a hurdle people have towards PC gaming. The beauty of which being the cost of the standard rig ultimately drops over time with parts occasionally being swapped out for stability and compatibility differences as new tech is released.

Well, I would say that depends on graphics settings etc but I built an I7 2600k pc so according to my link I am too rich to help you. (I'm dead broke and the pc is why. I'm really happy with it!). Basically get any new dual core with 3.0 or faster. AMD Athlon 250 x2 was my old pc's processor, using the same gts 450 had 4 gigs stock Hewlett Packard RAM and that is the only reason I don't recommend hp, unstable mobo didn't like having 8 gb corsair replacing crash prone hp RAM. Scll suggested ultra everything. Now they have extreme and the i7 says "lol u want me to stream your bronze s*** or should I stay bored? And why is twc so damn slow?". So I hope you find a better answer than mine! For what it's worth: i7 2600k/ 8gb corsair RAM 1333/ gts450 MSI/ ASUS mobo / thermaltake600w psu/ ASUS disk drive/ xlio case with LOTS of exhaust fans to keep even cooler (people say this brings in dust but so do intake fans and I have a big one flowing through a filter) negative psi is colder than pressure. Negligibly... Ps all graphics stats at 1080p. Edit: what a load of mumbo jumbo to forget to say: get A(ny) graphics card and 4 gb ram. Suggest nvidia and something close to gts 250. Suggest factory ram or, for a build, corsair. No less than 500w psu, this is hard to check! Prebuilts don't advertise their cut corners- psu is usually one of them!
