I know the title is vague but I feel like something really really big is about to happen. As some of you who might follow State of the Game or Live On Three know, Geoff "iNcontroL" Robinson was recently asked about plans on Korea, where he hinted that those plans have died down a bit because there could be potential for an even bigger announcement coming up, that might involve moving to Southern California.
Along with that, news has shown up recently that Gretorp, the Gosucoaching commentator and FnaticMSI player, is also moving across the country from New Jersey to, you guessed it, Southern California.
Moreover, Gosucoaching and EG player Machine has also stated that he has had to make the drive from the EG house in Arizona, up to California once again.
A few statements made by said players:
+ Show Spoiler [On iNcontroL's twitter page] +88iNcontroL Geoff Robinson back home back to work.. cali next weekend and onward! Why would I move to cali you ask? hmmm I dunno.. wait and see
+ Show Spoiler [When iNcontroL called in on Weapon of…] +
+ Show Spoiler [ Statement made by Machine] + "Off to California once again, starting to really really hate this drive xD" "Going to meet up with some friends while i'm in CA and going to meet up with Russell so we can talk about Gosucoaching."
Something definitely seems to be going on related to gosucoaching or these players or some large sponsor. Keep in mind that G4TV recently was all over coverage of the EG Masters Cup, and has been involving themselves in several different esports related to SC2 as well as the fighting game community, etc. Going to Los Angeles is no joke, this is the home to hollywood and production content coming out. I don't think it'd be a stretch to say that this could be one of the reasons for LA being a mentioned location.
In the Weapon of Choice show that iNcontroL called in, he said "Part of the reason I can't give a straight answer on that is that theres this other thing I'm doing thats actually so freaking big it could eclipse that, I'm moving to California in February, we're in talks with people who are with Daniel Negreanu [Professional Poker player]. We have big freaking stuff coming out."
This is all after talking about sponsors throwing 25,000 dollars at events and stuff.
Something big is about to happen in Starcraft 2 guys, I'm sure iNcontroL won't be able to comment on any more specifics than this, but this is just the information that I've gathered and thrown together in the past 25 minutes. I recognize the fact that all this stuff I'm throwing together will not all be related to the announcement that is sure to come, theres no way that anybody can get lucky enough to link this much stuff but even if 2-3 of these facts link together with some gigantic event or production coming up, we all HAVE to be excited.
Anybody else have any thoughts on what could be going on? I'm hoping that this thread could be up for discussing this up until an official announcement is actually made. So this is a rumor thread of sorts I suppose.

This is interesting!
GSL A LA NORTH AMERICA? What's bigger or equal to going to South Korea?
This is an interesting web you have going there! It'd be a really good PR move on G4's side if they started doing something a la GomTV

Is this FINALLY the big EG announcement? I'm trembling in anticipation.
|
|
I wonder how much interaction this will have with whatever it is Day[9] is doing, since he is also in Socal.
|
Well, now I have something to look forward to along with the next season of GSL
|
I'm just going to leave this here... http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=187687
Anyways, I'm quite excited to see what the big announcement is. Considering the amount of build up that's been going on, hopefully it won't disappoint. Heck, they even said that the new Korean EG Team House wasn't the "big" announcement. Perhaps all will be revealed in due time.
|
Maybe everyone decided all at once that they want some easy to get weed?
I'd guess nothing is happening. o.o But I hope I'm wrong lol.
Edit: Checked link above me. Hyping for months? Might be interesting, but not relevant for the near future.
|
|
I could never be a pro gamer because I would not be able to keep my mouth shut about big news. Heheh. Whatever it is, I am sure no one will be disappointed.

But this doesn't seem to be related to EG so that infested archon "onion-esque" article doesn't even apply. This is much more seemingly related to gosucoaching than anything, as Gretorp has also moved to Socal for an undisclosed reason.

Daniel Negreanu is being signed to EG as their new Terran. -Nostradamus
|
It's not only EG news though, other people are involved. Makes me think its got to be something gosucoaching related.
|
I also heard that Geoff and Gretorp are moving but Machine is NOT moving to california and I know as I asked Colbi about it earlier. There is no huge project coming from there its just people moving sorry :/
It was mentioned that it had something to do with Gosucoaching and gretorps other stuff.

Well he's been there for awhile, but because of college, so Day9 may not have anything to do with this. Perhaps some centralized league thing, like MLG's rolling out a Starcraft League in a big way? Might explain why JP delayed SoTG for so long and then just said "fuck it, I'm tired of waiting"? idk, but if there is something coming up I'll be hella excited.
|
I notice all the rumors have been coming from EG, fnatic, and gosucoaching. I haven't heard a peep from Team Liquid or other teams. I guessing it isn't going to be something huge as a "GSL in North America" or else other teams would be involved. Though, I do confess that I have bought the hype .
|
|
I honestly can't imagine anything bigger than EG players making a house in Korea. Made me so sad that these plans are apparently on hold for now. :/
InControl likes to hype his stuff (bless him), I don't know if I have it in me to really believe.
Another major tournament added to the scene next to GSL/TSL/MLG/DH/IEM/Blizzcon?

I think the nerd chills are starting up for me once again!

I guess this is being very optimistic, but it would be cool to have something like a GSL in North America which would work closely with the on in Korea. Having another big tournament would be great, but having another big tournament that would (possibly once or twice a year) bring all the huge names in SC2 based on the tournaments together so that they can play it out would be amazing.
On a related note, didn't Blizzard mention big tournaments occurring around the world awhile ago?
Edit: On second thought, they could be wording their public statements like this in order to get hype for something that normally wouldn't get as much attention. We'll see.

Maybe not machine but can you really say that incontrol is "just moving" after the tweet he put out as well as the response on Weapon of Choice? Come on now...and that people very close to Gretorp have been told by him "you'll see" when asked why he's moving to LA. Hard to be a coincidence, it could be, but theres no way you can tell me incontrol is "just moving, nothing else"

Think it will be a big tournament sponsored by them and some others maybe, or a new league with big cash prizes similar to gsl. Either way i'm caught up in the hype lol. Hope to hear some news soon.

On one hand, it would be awesome if G4TV took some time to replace a few hours of their Cops/CampusPD/Cheaters marathons with some SC2 or e-sports programming. Definitely a first step towards an American version of OGN or MBC Game.
On the other hand, it would also be awesome if this was the formation of another big tournament, a la MLG or GSL style. The more tournaments the better.
With all this talk about the state of the SC2 scene in Korea, it is very comforting to know that the Western scene is growing by leaps and bounds.
|
i just hope its not another HDH2;(

A "GSL USA" will be huge!
|
|
It's just the setup for the next Infested Archon article, don't get crazy now.
|
I know the secret EG announcement, but it's in my secret box.
|
I don't genuinely think G4TV would pick up some SC2 league thats not at all what I was saying, I guess it was just sort of an idea that there is a big plan in the works having to do with some big money for a SC2 league or maybe a tournament that could be high production, hence a move to LA. That or the location of LA just seems to be best for esports (its where most big things are anyways)
|
Did they announce WHEN they are going to reveal their announcement?
|
Color me intrigued. Hope the announcement doesn't disappoint.

Unless something outstandingly awesome is happening shortly, I'm starting to think incontrol is suffering from artosis disease (extreme need to exaggerate any event related to oneself).

By teasing this and slowly attuning us to the idea of something of this magnitude happening in our lifetimes, he is saving our very lives.
Remember the scene in Dogma where Alanis Morissette starts shouting and Ben Affleck's head explodes? It'd be like that, just messier.

Is he really making a switch into sc2? or is this an inside joke that i am missing out on. Becuase it sure does sound hilarious.

I don't think it is the big EG announcement. If you remember on StoG, Incontroll acted like JP was hyping that announcement for so long, that it wouldn't be worth the anticipation.
Apparently if it goes through, has the power to uproot that of Korea. Meaning its significant.
|
Daniel Negreanu? I just hope it's not a $10,000 buy-in tournament.
|
Mmm im gonna drop this here. I dont know if im correct on this, but espn has poker into its schedule, so maybe they are talking with Daniel Negreanu (who OP says its a pro player), and they are trying to make some sc2 into TV, which is a even bigger thing than the EG house as they are saying, and the fact that day9 lives in california afik, and some gosucoaching people are involved, makes me think that it could be a kind of games shoutcast+analysis stuff
I might be totally wrong (like 1000-1 wrong) but it would be amazing for NA scene, and here in europe eurosport channel has aired some games from dreamhack or something afik, so maybe something like that could happen, remember, you heard it here first
BitByBit Prime is joining EG and changing ID to DinosaurPrincess420
That could be even bigger!

If i had to guess i would say that Gosucoaching is teaming up with Negreanu to make a Poker/SC2 training site. Like Cardrunners or DeucesCracked but with a Starcraft section.

I don't want to sound pessimistic, but I don't think Esports are really going to get that big in the US. Parents here generally think video games are for lazy kids and think video games are just games. How would an American parent react if their son told them he wanted to become a pro gamer? The son would probably get laughed at and get zero support. Also, it isn't that glamorous to be a known WoW/Starcraft player here in So Cal. I would be crucified if my class mates knew I spend my spare time playing Starcraft. There could be some money in it of course, but I'm not sure how successful it would be. It might be successful with the hardcore crowd, but what about the casual crowd?

Yeah, you obviously think that now because it's never been tested. Maybe this announcement will help convert the more casual gamers or something of that nature, we don't know. I say we wait for the actual announcement before coming to conclusions.

interesting theory
Gretorp announced that he quit his job and was going to become a full time progamer as his occupation, but I didn't understand why he would need to also move to California in the process.
|
Well whatever it is it has got to be huge. Since they are treating this like a national security secret then it better be big, if not then I and probably everyone else will be disappointed and lose interest fast.
|
So many people compare esports in the west to how it is in Korea, but I think some of you are forgetting that S. Korea wasn't always as accepting to video games as it is right now. Here in the west, with social media and the internet growing more and more, I think it is very possible for video games to get more attention. The problem is, generally when money is thrown at e-sports, it's thrown to the wrong places (ie. microsoft sponsoring a pro WoW team). WoW just is not a great spectator sport, but SC2/BW are great spectator sports, as long as you have a knowledgeable caster.

what kind of strange school are you in? i think you might just being a bit self-conscious here. when i was in school, plenty of kids played games. i'm sure not much has changed in the last couple of years. it might not be glamorous but it's not something that would ruin your social life by itself - if it would, i imagine there wasn't too much to ruin in this hypothetical life!

The son would probably get laughed at and get zero support. Also, it isn't that glamorous to be a known WoW/Starcraft player here in So Cal. It might be successful with the hardcore crowd, but what about the casual crowd? It obviously wasn't always like that in Korea, and I doubt there was that much better of an environment there. If progaming can overcome Asian parents, it can do anything. There's no magic in the Orient. ESPORTS just is.

They've never heard of starcraft, if they saw what it was, they'd probably like it. I think the problem is, no one knows what starcraft is in america.

Ok, this is my little fanfic/potential future:
EG asks their sponsor intel for money to make a SC2 league, and, since 5 MILLION DOLLARS isn't much for intel, a NA GSL is formed. California, being a HUGE center for gaming in the U.S. and the home of the creators of SC2, is chosen to be the location. The maps of this new GSL consist of the best Blizzard maps and the best ICCUP maps. Blizzard, not to be outmapped in their own country, hire more mapmakers and put the GSL NA maps on the ladder. Foreigners, being not even close to as cheesy as the Koreans, raise the metagame and popularity of SC2 to new heights. Videos are posted on youtube and soon subscribers surpass huskystarcraft. Soon stadiums are packed and TV channels are even being formed. NA becomes the new Korea and SC2 becomes more successful than SC1 ever was. Super special nerd dream: SC2 popularity draws more developers into PC gaming and consoles die off. Intel gets repaid for all it has invested.
If I could predict the future and this would happen, I would be smiling my entire life.

the point is it's not like playing starcraft is something you have to hide to protect yourself at school. i bet more kids play starcraft than you realize - i run in to people who play in the strangest places.

SC2 + top poker player in the world(second to only phil ivey imo) = something big! This could be exciting =]

When I run the 'add Facebook friends' thing on Battle.net, I get a list of all types of unlikely people with BNet accounts that use the same email as their facebook, let alone those who don't, and most of them are not a-typical nerds. Whilst some of them are obviously casual WoW or other players, a fair few of them are SC2 which was a massive surprise to me. Most of them play campaign/customs/2s/3s/4s and other though, only a few are actually the serious ladder type, which suggests that competitive 1v1 may not be as popular amongst this sort of crowd

The other thing is I don't think I've seen him enter a tournament since MLG Dallas, what made him take a couple month break and then quit his job to go at it full time?

I guess it is time for us to quit school and start taking sc2 seriously. Lets do this

Gretorp actually told Catz on Catz's stream last week that he might not have time to be a progamer at all anymore, whatever it is in his future might take up even more of his time than having a normal job does right now. But whatever Gretorp's got in store, it's some kind of content creation, not progaming.

What if he's going to be casting this with Day9???

I think the OP has all the dots there, but didn't quite connect them. Here are the pieces I see to the puzzle.
iNcontroL - moving to SoCal, one of the best personalities in Starcraft
Gretorp - also moving to SoCal, and another very personable Starcraft player
Daniel Negreanu - professional poker player, on the same poker team as ElkY, a former SCBW pro, and at least knows about Starcraft. Suggested to be in talks with iNcontroL and others in the professional Starcraft world about something big. Oh, and he's also a very personable guy and has had plenty of camera time, and is fairly well known in the US.
G4TV - offices located in Los Angeles, Recently sponsored, streamed, and did a few articles with the EG Master's Cup which was put on by iNcontroL's team, EG.
What do you get when you combine 3 great personalities, a professional SC2 scene that's getting larger and more popular all the time, and a TV network focused on Video Games? Well, my dear nerds, you have a Starcraft 2 (or eSports) TV show.
Oh, and Day9 lives in the area, too, but not sure if he would be involved with this
So, that's my theory. I think a big tournament series with PokerStars as a sponsor could be possible as well.
In addition to the Negreanu stuff, judging from comments from iNcontroL and SirScoots, there could also be an SC2 house in LA, as it doesn't sound like they're completely sold on a Korean EG house like they once were. They could very well do both, have small houses in Korea and LA as they've said they want to rotate players in Korea.

Some news about something in February

Incontrol just now on the GosuCoaching coaches' corner says of the very big deal thing: "the hype that I am talking about now is going to be announced in February." But he's going to keep teasing everyone about it.

An announcement for an announcement in February. Stay tuned

HELL YES I live in Northern California so if anything goes down I'll be there!

Incontrol needs to hype this thread. Something like:
"Forces are stirring beneath society that you cannot even begin to fathom. A new age is coming."
|
I'm so desperate for this thread to turn into an insane deep analysis of everything iNcontroL has said over the last five years along with a list of everyone living in California, SC2 related or otherwise and topped off with some sort of ESPORTS mathematics.
