Do you have losing streaks or is it just me?

This friday the 13th was a bad one for me. Over the last 2 days I'd risen to #14 rank in my Bronze division. Then this morning I started playing. Lost 5 in a ROW!!!!! By the third game I was screaming WHAT THE FU@K !!! when I was losing. If it wasn't protossers doing cheese rushes, it was some other dumb mistake or this or that.

Then I won one, then lost 2 more.

Then this evening, I played a few more games. Lost 2 then won one. I'm now down to #24 in rank.

I'm going to bed now. Another friday evening, and no women in my bed. SIGH.

Got to get up early (8 am) to go to SoCal lan 5 tomorrow.

Anyone else ever have losing streaks like this?

Not today, but last week I was rank 1 diamond, rocking it out, and then went on a giant 20 game losing streak over 2 days. I went from rank 1 to rank 100. It was painful, but I kept at it and I've starting winning again. I'm working my way back up. My score now is a little less than 400, and my rank is in the 40's. Not where I'd like to be, but I've got my "mojo" back so it should not be long.

So anyway, hang in there man. This post actually really helped me a lot. It's worth the read: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=142131
For ever winner there are dozens of losers. Odds are you're one of them.

I've been itching to get out of platinum league one of these days, but it's very hard on your concentration and confidence to just get 1a's by people two leagues below you who have less than 50% win/loss ratios. If the AMM isn't putting me against high level diamonds, it's trying to make deliberate fun of me by placing me against gold and silver players.

Win one, lose three. Win one, lose four more. The points don't even balance out, since you have to be on your A-game to lose 20-25 points against a 150-point silver league player who got lucky on where to 4gate proxy all in on lost temple.

I even tried playing against my non-competitive friends who are legitimately worse than me by a longshot, still losing best of 3's to 1-base carrier play.

Needless to say, I feel the frustration.

it happens to the best of us man. I feel your frustration but the best thing you can do is shake it off and learn something from your losses, doesn't matter what league you're in.

Probability theory has some results on the "longest sequence of heads in a series of coin flips". If I remember correctly, the result was that with enough coin flips, there will be a series of only heads with length proportional to the square root of the total number of coin flips.

So if you play N games, and we assume that all of them are evenly matched (you win with 1/2 probability), there's bound to be a squareroot(N) losing streak in there somewhere. For 1000 games, that means a ~31-long losing streak; for 400 games, a ~20 long losing streak

On the brighter side, you would probably have a ~31-long winning streak as well

Note that this is all theory, in reality it probably wouldn't hold because of the match-making system (if get into a losing streak because of pure chance, then after a bit you will be fighting people below your skill level and you will win with a very high probability). But I think the moral of the story is that extremely long losing streaks are bound to happen even if every game is even, so if you get into a losing streak, just accept it as a result of probability theory

Sure everyone has losing streaks. I had some 5 game or more losing streaks. Even pros should have then, because its just human to loose patience and get frustratet after you lost a couple of games, wich then makes you lose even more games.
Best thing you can do is just shut off the game, make something different and then try again.

Think the most I've lost in a row is 5, gets well annoying especially if you get cheesed everygame. So far today I won my first 3, then lost my next 3 to stupid attacks I should have been able to defend (roach rush and two 4 gates).

I haven't really had a losing streak in SC2, but in SCBW I would get ridiculous losing streaks in ICCUP / PGTour. I would start the day off C+ and end up C- / D+. I specifically remember a 15 game losing streak that made me 1) rage pretty hard 2) break a mouse 3) throw a water bottle at the wall that subsequently made a pretty big dent.

Just keep at it man. It happens to everyone at some point. Even bisu went on a mega slump.

I consider 1 lose a streak then rage quit. Screaming "SC2 is so F***ing broke!" I'm going to play WoW.

Then I realized im 22 and I need to grow up.

Keep practicing.

Lawl. It is quite rare that I find a woman in my bed after a night of playing starcraft as well (and I imagine the same is true for most). When I do have the pleasure of a woman in my bed for the night, starcraft isn't really on the menu.
Unless its a midnight booty call in which case I have already done all of the crafting for the night... mmmmm booty call.

But yes, losing streaks suck. I had a 4 lose streak today (i play toss) after two baneling busts in a row, a pretty good pvp which I ended up losing and then another loss to Z mass muta+a bajillion spinecrawlers... knew i should have gone phoenix harrass to start out. whatevs. But I was on an 9 win streak before that so i can't get too upset and then after the lose streak I made up most of the points from a win + bonus pool so I got back to 500 point diamond. Cool story... i know. =o

Oh and I will see the OP at the socal lan 5 tomorrow. :D
I get it.

Everyone will probably go on a losing streak one time or another. The most important thing is to not let losing get to you. In my case sometimes when i lose, i continue to think about that game in the next game if i'm still angry about it, and it will greatly affect my play and i may lose that game as well, and it becomes a vicious cycle.

I had a string of losses today as well, 5 or 6 in a row I think. Dropped like 60 ranks in my diamond division. I decided to just pub stomp some hon games and try again tomorrow

edit:
One of my losses was against a protoss who proxy 2-gated, which I was able to fend off really well and even kill the probe with an scv, but lost about 5 minutes later to a 4 warp gate allin that I wasn't sufficiently prepared for T_T

my wins and losses only come in streaks. well, not absolute streaks like 20 in a row, but more of a general streak. One time i went 5-22, then 17-2, then 3-15, you get the idea. it has always been like this for me, i can't find a pattern or anything no matter how hard i try. at first it confused me but now i have accepted that my wins and losses just come in massive streaks for no reason.

I have losing streaks because I usually rage inside and don't let myself leave the computer until I win one game. Went from 930 to 800 points in diamond in one night T_T

I'll usually do this but after losing my first 7 games yesterday I decided it was time to stop.

What i do against a MMM ball is to either do a 3 gate robo and wait for the terran to walk up my ramp and forcefield off half his army and repeat, or i get fast collosus. Ive been trying to use void rays in my PvT's but i dont know how to use them to there fullest potential.

I'll go on 10-0 runs and then go 0-10. Literally that divided. Its pretty fucking frustrating.

i got three 6 games losing streak in 2 days, i wasnt too happy about it. Though ofc it meant i could have huge winning streaks as well as my rating dropped, so once it was like 6 loss followed up by 8 wins.
3-4 days ago i was at ~730 which meant top 100 / ladder, 2 days later i was at 620 o.O i hope today i ll get myself over 800 finally

I have horrible streaks as well. The thing that helps me is that I ended up with two cd keys so I have an account that I switch to when I'm losing and just mass games until I feel like the streak is over.

I find that being tired/exhausted is what's leading to losing streaks most often for me, but occasionally they do happen for no apparent reason at all.

I've learned to relax, take a break and come back to the game later, that usually fixes it.

Went from 390 to 164 rating in Diamond (when the world top was at 550 rating).
I went nuts after losing so many games.
But then I learned not to rage when I lose. A loss is a lesson learned whether it's by proxy cheese or anything else and you got to be critic on yourself.
Now I'm at 560 rating though (still in Diamond )

6 in a row was my longest losing streak. I know I should stop after 2-3 losses in a row so I can calm down and get my thoughts back together. Playing when you're angry never helps.

I had 2 small losing streaks yesterday as well (4 losses in a row then win then 3losses) but even with all the losses bnet promoted me diamond, that helped because now i get matched vs mid level diamond players and no longer against top10 diamond players (something is wrong with the AMM) and i started going with a normal winrate (50-66%)again.

I've been playing random so its really easy for me to go on winning and losing streaks based on the race matchups i RNG. If I get cheesed in my off-races I pretty much just lose =(.

I feel like i lose every game vs protoss nowadays, im a terran, it's just so sad, losing to the 3gate robo every single game. no idea what BO i should use

just go 3gate robo and win :S if they go 3rax just chill in your base and get colossi, or scout that they are teching, make more units and push

9 game losing streak... the funny think i was like up against 6-7 terrans in which tvt is my worse matchup. I blame friday 13th for the sudden spikes in terran.

Nice to see I'm not alone. On last Monday it was my worst SC2 day so far. Until there i was an 650 pt Diamond player with more than 60 % winratio.

On this day i lost game after game and i couldnt stop playing. I just could not believe this. Overall i lost about 20 games (2 wins in between or so) and I wend from Top 10 to rank 80. Ok in the last twoe games i just did some nukerushes or massnukes because i thought i loose anyway.

At least the loosing lasted 2 more days until i left it behind. hopefullyforever.

I sometimes think it is due to the matchmaking system. It would actually make sense - when you win a lot, it will put you against stronger opponents. If it overestimated you a little, those stronger opponents outplay you and your losing streak begins. The system then sees, the guy is losing a lot, and again puts you against weaker opponents, which is when you start to win again.

I don't know if I like this idea though, my winning and losing streaks not even being up to my performance.

Had a 9 game losing streak as zerg, mostly against terrans. Now before you think I am one of those "omg terran is op" let me say ZvT is my best matchup. So far one or two terrans has stopped me once I got ultralisks out.

It cost me 100 points (sitting at 350 right now ) and my mouse because I raged and slammed it against my desk.

Watched the replays, figured out what I was doing wrong (terrible terrible macro) and working on getting those points back. The first win after that though was against a silver player...(and I am in diamond)

I think everyone has losing streaks to some extent... It's been a while since I lost more than 3 in a row I think, but its happened more than once
Ironically I had a 9 win streak on friday the 13th untill I ended the night with a loss.

The important thing is to not play when angry. Don't just say "Oh fuck that, just wanna play another game to win again!!!", but take a small break to cool down and never play mad. Don't think I've ever played more games than 3 straight after each other if I lose all. And I've noticed a drop in my performance if I'm still pissed from the previous game.

If you dont want to stop playing, just play a custom game for 15mins or something before watching the replay and find out why you lost and what you should change next time.

I lost a little more than usual, but not too much. For every game you lose, someone else wins.. so it doesn't have anything to do with the fact its friday the 13th xD

If you go on a losing streak, it helps to just go away and fume a bit for 20 mins, then come back and watch the replays. Unless you're like 800+ diamond, you'll realize by the second replay or so that the people you meet are actually pretty bad and the odds will be stacked in your favour as long as you play a safe standard game and don't screw up too badly. That's usually enough to turn a 3-5 loss streak around for me.

I had this losing streak like last week, and it has to be worst thing I've ever experienced in gaming. I've had losing streaks in over games before, but it never really affected me because I played games for fun, and had no strong intention of improving. But when you're pouring a lot of effort into your game and lose so much, it'll get to you at some point.

I went from like rank 15 - 17 to the 50's in Diamond league, painful to watch i swear. I'm still recovering right now, and I must say low Diamond players are really bad O.o

Being on a loosing streak is kind of like not being able to sleep at night. It touches the same psychological triggers.

You know when you can't fall asleep for hours and you are in bed just thinking, "if I fall asleep now, I will get 4 hours of sleep". "If I fall asleep now I will get 3 hours of sleep". And that stress is whats actually keeping you up.

When you are on a loosing streak, 9 out of 10 people will be looking at the ladder or their wins against losses. "If I win a game again now I will get back to 20'th place in the ladder". "If I win a game now I will get back to the 35'th spot in the ladder". "If I loose one more game now I will be down to more losses than wins" etc".

The key is to find a way to ignore all that stuff, DO NOT look at the ladder while on a loosing streak, don't count wins, rating or how many spots you lost and have to take back.
War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

I wouldn't worry about it, look at HOW you lost rather than how many losses, how bad a mistake did you make to lose? Did the opponent just rush you? (I couldn't care less about rush losses).

A few nights ago, I had lost 3 in a row, costing me about 34 points.

Then in the next game, the other guy was favored to win, and he quit the game 2 seconds after it started, so I got the win and 40 points, for a net profit of 6 points. Thereby erasing the 3 game point loss.

I felt better. Wasn't a REAL win, but I'd like to think I'd have won anyhow.

After each game, when I review the stats page, I always check to see what rank the guy was that I played. I've gotten a couple Silvers but it's been almost all Bronze to my upper end Bronze.

I usually stop if I lose 3+ games in a row, because I get too mad so I play worse.

I wish i could do that, usually i go on tilt and continue to play until i at least win 2 games in a row. It's a bad habit i need to break cause when i get mad after losing a lot my builds suffer cause i'm to mad to play.

This might be the wrong thread partly, but I menetioned earlier than I had a 9win streak yesterday... Well that just came back and shot me in the arse. All of those games were quite easy, no real good players.

However, due to my hidden rating skyrocketing I've now faced the highest tier of diamond for the last 4 games and not stood a chance in either of em... Its very depressing to loose when you know you didnt actually do that much wrong, but were completely outskilled by people with 3 times my apm and tons of experience (Im completely new to rts) playing against good players... So I foresee a long losing streak incoming, doubt it'll stop at just 4.

The last guy I met had 550ish games player, against my 160ish
I was diamond rank 5 in my division before the losses, but as most diamond players I'm quite poor...

Anyone else ever have losing streaks like this?

the match maker attempts to find opponents at your level which causes the vast majority of players on the BNet2 ladder to have win percentages close to the 50% level.

flip a coin 5 times... and every once and a while... it'll come up tails 5 times.

everyone has losing streaks but if you keep playing when your on one you'll just keep losing. its best just to get up and walk away from it for a while then come back to it.

well right now im trying to stop my losing streak, playing against a terran i go DT, take out most of his base with 4 dt's. He counters with about 30-40 marines, nothing else - i take them out with cannons + dt, but he manages to get my nexus - i bought the dt's so im on 40 minerals 90 gas :/ he then floats a factory out of range of what are now archons, and is sat afk out of range with his one factory and no other buildings. I have a full base of stuff still, minus a nexus :/

Hate playing against terran at the best of times, but this is just stupid; he has no units, any other race this would not be even a slight problem, ps why is archon range only 2?

I was Gold Rank 1 in my division with a 20-9 record, and then went on a 5 game losing streak vs Diamonds. I then won vs a Plat player and was promoted to Diamond . I'm such a fraud.

In WC3 i started out with a FFA record of around 10-15 and was ranked pretty high. I then proceeded to go on to a 90 game losing streak. :/ ouch lol. No word of a lie and not even a single win in between to help make up for it lol.

I think the matchmaking system may have something to do with this... It might not just be poor play based on rage or fatigue or statistics.

If you string together a few wins and improve your rating bnet will match you with better and better players. Perhaps in earlier cases, where you have less than 200 games played it doesn't know exaclt how good you are and puts you against opponents that are simply out of your league to check if you should generally be promoted or placed with higher diamonds. This leads to losing streaks.

After you lose a few and it realizes you're not fit to compete with 1000 rating diamonds it puts you with weaker opponents, maybe some high ranking platinums even, leading to a nice winning spree. Rinse and repeat until the system has a better understanding of your exact skill level from a larger number of games and opponents.

Personally after getting promoted to diamond I went 6-2, then 2-6, then 13-3, and am constantly dreading an impending losing streak once bnet decides I should be playing against the likes of huk and idra lol.

By that point it becomes like gambling, you lose everything, I know I should just stop right there after the third loss, but I just can't go to bed without a last win, and in the search for it, I bag another 3 losses .

It's statistics. Flip a coin 100 times, you're going to have a few 6-7 streaks and a lot of 4-5 streaks. If you have a 50% win percentage, this is pretty much expected.

I lost 170 points in one day =(
From 682 to 512... I dunno how.. I just started getting pissed off when I went on a 3 game losing streak and tried cheesing pretty much every game for like 6 hours. Every loss just fueled me even more into playing ladder to gain back my points. If I were a gambling man I'd probably be broke.

just look at this graph, it makes me sad.

when i win i keep on playing, when i lose to bullshit that's clearly my own fault i just quit playing for a while and get my mood up, only way to escape losing streaks. when i get cheesed i just get pissed of at the player so i never blame myself, usually goes into a winning streak after those for some reason :o

Indeed. The ladder is a zero-sum competition. For each one player's win, there's another player's loss. So for each losing streak you go on, the collective of "everyone else" can be said to be on a winning streak. So in that sense, you're helping make the world a better place... for someone else.

Streaking is worse in gambling, because it often starts when some idiot realizes he's already put a third of his paycheck into poker tables on the 1st of the month, and he now has to win some back because he can't make rent anymore. Then he proceeds to lose the rest.

edit: wtf, I said "Poker" and it didn't form a hotlink to TL poker.

I just lost to 3 Terran in a row.

Granted, I play Terran, but I almost never win TvT. I hate it.

I lose like 80% of my games vs Terran and win like 80% vs P

around 60% vs Z
and it never leaves this zone

You need to change your attitude. Don't play only to win! This way you only get more and more frustrated with each loss added to your streak.

Think of what every loss gave you in terms of game knowledge and just how you can use it in the future to improve as a starcraft player.

Best thread about this sort of mentality: clicky

I went 16-5 one day. I was very satisfied. The next day I played 3 games, lost all of them. Next day played 3 games, lost all of them. Next day I lost the first 6 of my games. Then I won 5 in a row, lost one more and won another. Then I took another break. Yep, loss streaks will happen. So will win streaks. Don't let it bother you. =)

Happens to all of us, take a break, watch some videos, go eat, go out for a walk, just reset your frame of mind and then try again.

Also, like said in the Nal_rA Oldboy series, do 10 pushups every time you lose. It gives you time to reflect on your loss, and keeps your body fit a little bit at a time : P

Strange.... I've had a pretty good win/loss ratio for the first handful of games. Afterwards, my ratio became about 50% so I thought oh ok, I guess this is my level. The 50% ratio lasted for at least a week. Today all of a sudden, I went 3-6 and one of my wins was a disconnect from opponent...

I guess I wasn't fit to play today since I seem to have slower reaction than usual, and cannot think clearly.

I was once rank 1 diamond!!! :D
But because my division was newly created and I was the only one in that division at the time.
Har har~!
I was automatically placed around 60 when ppl were starting to show up in my division.
one bad day, I played and lost many games so I was pushed back to around 90.
but currently I am proper rank 34 diamond in full division of 100 people.

usually when I lose like 3-4 in a row or i'm like 1-4 I take a break. I'll get pissed off at either cheese, imbalance blah blah blah either way I'm not playing with a cool head regardless of how i started. Like two weeks ago I was tired and I thought i'd play, went 1-5 and lost games I should have won I just wasn't paying attention.
