SOCAL LAN 4 JAN 10TH CANCELLED - STAY TUNED FOR NEXT DATE AND LOCATION
Ever since last year (December 07), when Quesadilla and I started (re-started) hosting the SoCal LAN's, they have been progressively more successful. Now, it will be the one year anniversary of the first SoCal LAN, and I want to see the biggest and best LAN yet!
Here's a brief history (in picture form) of the SoCal LAN's!
It all started in 2005... when Syntax (aka Izack.. or the other way around), planned out the first one, which led into a second one (pic), and we all met again for the WCG qualifiers that year as well. Good times, back when we were all little newbies, watching Day[9], CypressMan, and Froz destroy everyone. Well actually, it seems like nothing has changed since then. But the LAN's were nice, friendly, and tons of fun. Although there was a hiatus for several years - no more fun LAN's.
Then in about December 2007, Quesadilla said "hey some SoCal people should get together and play BW!" and of course I jumped right on board with that idea. We organized the first SoCal LAN, which was really low key, only 7 players actually played, but it was a blast. Xeris, Sonic, and Machine were able to take 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, respectively. After that, we decided to host another one!
In February of 2008 we hosted SoCal LAN 2, this one was at a better venue, there were more players, and there was a prize pool as well as a raffle. The games were really intense, although Day[9] dominated it... but Machine flexed his muscles, and JoeKim cheesed his way up to the 3rd spot!
We knew that another SoCal LAN was pretty much a certainty....
August 23rd 2008 was the date of the third SoCal LAN. This one featured an even better venue (Howies), the largest number of participants (17), and the largest prize pool. We also received a free case of Monster energy drinks at the end. The skill level at this one was also better than it has ever been. CypressMan returned to dominate after failing to come to SoCal LAN 1 and 2 (but he owned the 2005 ones), with Day[9] taking 2nd place, and Deuce the unknown gosu taking 3rd place.

This brings me to SoCal LAN 4... which will be held sometime in December 2008 to commemorate the one year anniversary of hosting these LAN's. We have finally found a great location, with a good price and play package, and a good staff (Howies), and have developed a good base of players that attend regularly... Now we're looking to have even more players, higher skill, more fun, and a better prize pool!

In order to make the most successful event possible, I'd like to get started on this early, so here goes:
1) 2v2 Side Tournament??
We're going to be having an all day pass (until 2AM) - so we will have a lot of time to possibly have a side tournament or something for even more fun.
a) Yes, interested
b) No, not interested
If enough people are interested, maybe we can have a little side thread where people can start organizing and find partners and stuff. If we do a 2v2 tournament, I'd like to have at least 4-8 teams.
2) Entrance Fee
$20
3) Main Tournament Format
For SoCal LAN 2, we just did a straight up double elimination bracket, and for SoCal LAN 3 we did a Group Stage -> Double Elim Bracket with the top 8 from the groups. I'm thinking we can stick with that format. Anybody significantly disagree?
**NOTE: It will be at Howies again, and I'm going to talk to their manager and see if we can get the technical issues (wide screen / restrictive comps) worked out.**

I'm definitely down for whenever, I'll vote for whatever most other people do. I think the super gosu players care about prize more than everybody else. Hey everyone who was at SoCal LAN 3, I would like to compile a list of things that I could give to the manager at Howies to see if he can do anything about fixing them / making the LAN experience better.
I already got answers about the following two things:
1) They are fixing an issue with their comps about mouse sensitivity, so we will be able to adjust/change the mouse sensitivity by the time of the LAN. HOWEVER, we can't install our own drivers, it's their company policy in order to prevent abuse, etc.
2) The screen size... they said that the only thing they could do is change the monitors to not have scaling, aka aspect ratio or whatever.. obviously this would make the screens smaller but it should be able to fix the widescreen issue, correct?
Anything else you would like me to talk to the manager about? Now's the time to speak up~

Other issues included not being able to go on the internet..
Not being able to game on b.net..
Which leads to not having all map choices.
Not being able to plug in older mouse/keyboards and even headphones (because comps are on the ceiling). Can they provide the ps2/usb adapters and maybe extender of some kind to headphone jack?
I'll probably be there. As far as buy-in, 20$ is good. What maps will we be using?
PS- Did you ever get the replays from scl3?

you could game on bnet ? I'm 90% sure I was able to download maps from bnet, I wento n east op Lzuruha with Ogenki to get some maps.
I did get the reps, I gave em to diggity to make some VODS, then forgot about them =P I can make a rep-pack and upload it if you like.
I'll make sure to ask about usb adapters, and uh not sure about maps yet

Although ghostclaw does sound awesome.

Some computers could, some couldn't it, some lagged, etc. It was rather annoying because I couldn't play bnet games in the downtime.
We need a dedicated person with ICCUP maps to stay on b.net on time so we can DL maps from them.

that kind of undermines the entire plan of having a tournament, if people just come to play but not "play" in the tournament.. plus you still need to pay for the computer time.

But I will play in the tournament. Just because.
$20 is key, because I can use the other $5 for gas, hookers, Fritos and other stupid shit. If anyone is in east LA County (Covina, San Dimas, Azusa, Pomona etc.) I can give you a ride. Any farther than that is stretching it. I'm not gonna go pick up any fools in Riverside.
This is my big thing; I saw this in a previous post but, seriously, will we be able to bring our own peripherals? (KB, Mouse) ? I use an oldschool IBM Model M KB and pretty much all other KBs are complete shit in comparison so I'd really like to be able to use it. Mouse I don't care so much. I use a Logitech G5 but I'm not using the software at the moment so it doesn't really matter. As long as I could just bring it, and plug it in, that'd be fine. But let me repeat I suck, _really_hard_ I mean if I survive the first round of the tournament it will be a Disney Miracle on Ice. So it doesn't really matter what I use, but I really want to use my KB. I don't know. Just make them understand I really like my KB and it has a long cord so It doesn't matter if the CPUs are on the fucking roof of the building next door. I could probably still plug it in.
Basically I haven't been to a LAN in a long time and I really want to. And lately I've been playing nothing but SC . So I will hang out with a bunch of hyper azn kids for a day and hopefully learn something.

k updated the names ... about next week or so I'll get back in touch with the manager at Howies and make sure we'll be able to fix stuff like the screen and see what we can do about making sure the peripherals will all work. and we'll stick with $20 for an entrance fee.

Yeah aspect ratio would've been nice. It was frustrating as hell last time 'cause of the god damn restrictions with mouse drivers, internet, and things like that. It was a nice place, but still, the annoying things got to me a little.

Might be hard to find a comp that hasn't updated. Some worker may have actually gone through and updated all of them too.
And the Lan Latency is effected by 1.16 too afaik. It has to do with how the game processes and its all fucked.

Last time I 'rented' a usb/ps2 adapter from the nearby Best Buy for 30$.

Man, we really need to boost the attendance to this thing... What is the biggest catch for people not going at this point? Price? Timing? Other attendees? I believe and hope that each SoCal LAN is bigger and better than the last, but it's looking grim on maintaining that trend right now.
Day9 can't go cause he's busy, Cypress' car isn't doing hot, we got a few maybe's, and other kids are being indecisive mofo's!

Xeris, if the manager at Westminster is a tool, a brand new Howie's just opened up in Buena park, which favor's Machine and other people more towards the LA area anyways. You might want to try that manager and his joint and see if we have better luck. These things aren't too hard to plan so maybe that guy will be more responsible and get back to his clients?

Ok so here's the dillio. Just called them. The old manager, Brandon actually just quit about a week ago... so I'm going to email their general manager and the guy I spoke to today is going to call the tech department and confirm about the widescreen issue, so I should have an answer from him pretty soon.
But everything seems good to go. I'll update the first post with infos.

This will PROBABLY last until about 7-8PM if I had to take a guess... maybe sooner since it seems turnout might be lower.

ok big update ... Howies is out. apparently they've raised their prices a shitload, it's fucking $20 for an all day pass. so this is essentially GG'd unless we get another location.

I've been looking at the thread ever since the second socal lan was announced, back when I used to lurk on the forum a lot. Anyways, I have never been able to attend one since I go to school in northern california, but if you guys can host it over the summer, I'll be sure to come. Sometime in July or August?

OK I've been talking with Xeris and it looks like it'll happen in July.
I'll let Xeris make the official announcement.
I'm work on a few banners to promote the event inside our cybercafe as well as on our website. Look for it in the next few days.
