- Three Razer mice will be up for grabs in a raffle that will take place at the LAN. In order to be eligible to be in the raffle, you MUST sign up and CONFIRM your participation in the tournament (link will be provided below). If you do not sign up and confirm on the tournament site, you will not be able to take part in the raffle (you can still play in the tournament though). The reason for this is to cut down on time taken to actually start the tournament. I want to have brackets practically ready to go right when everyone arrives, so this is not only an added bonus for efficiency, but a little extra bonus and motivation to everyone to have a chance to win something even if you are a newb!

I can come probably. I wouldn't mind car pooling and paying my part of the gas bill or whatever but I wouldn't want to stay overnight if I'd would have to dish out 150-200 for a hotel room unless I'm sharing with 2-3 other guys.

Hard alcohol is much better.
I can't make anything outside of the GTA, but I doubt that would sway any decisions. I do think a Toronto tournament or get together (for BW of course, socialising is for losers) should be in order some time. If so, maybe the Gray Region could be considered? I believe at least 20+ people can get in there, tonnes of nerdy stuff, and from when I went there a few times a couple years ago, the management is very nice. They also had (hopefully have) really low rates. It was like $1.50 an hour or something.

I thought it was a 2 day event, where day 1 would be group battles and day 2 would be a 8 men double elim tourney. At least that's what TT1 told me.
But if we're only doing a one day event, we have to start super early, cuz 20 + players and double elim can take VERY long.

"k i went to a few pc rooms near my house to check out the prices to have an idea about the prices (im hoping to get a deal with about 70% of the entrance fee to go in the prize pool so we can have a prize pool of over 1k), within the next 2-4 days im gonna go to the downtown pc rooms to get some information and hopefully make a deal
some information about the tournament which i am suggesting as the format,
1. ORGANIZATION: We will be renting out the whole pc room for 1 day so the cost of the players coming from outside doesnt go too high, most likely it'll be a big day from like 9-10am to like 11pm-12am and we'll finish it all in 1 day

TOURNEY FORMAT: I never experienced this format of bracket making so i don't know if it will take much time but i think it'll be a good format if we split the players up in groups firstly and players play a bo1 matchs so the top 2-3 players of each group advance and we then host a tournament bracket with the remaining players(this is for time consumption), however the problem with this is the players who will be knocked out in the group stages would feel excluded from the tournament and it would get pretty boring for them so i dont know.. we could do a normal style tourney with everyone in it and have bo1 wb's in the early rounds until like the 2nd or 3rd round and from then on have bo3 wb's, the lb's would be bo1 as usual and the winner of the wb gets a 1-0 lead in the finals (bo5 or bo7, i think bo7 would be better especially if we have time)
so basicly the breakdown of the these 2 options are:
Option 1:
-first group stage, top 2-3 players from each group advance to the tournament style brackets and they play bo3 matchs from the 1st round (wb) and bo1 matchs on the lb, wb bracket winner gets 1-0 start in a bo5 or bo7 final.
Option 2:
-we start right away from tournament style brackets and have bo1 matchs on the wb for the first 2-3 rounds (because there would be alot of players) and follow it up with bo3 until the wb finals, wb bracket winner gets 1-0 start in a bo5 or bo7 final.
we can also do option 2 with a bo3 format for every round in the wb
-PLEASE take into consideration also that Emerald has pmed me about having a lan cw, it seems that hed like to host a lan also in the same day as us so afterwards we could have a friendly lan cw vs the swedish players, ofc this would only happen if we have enough time, Option 1 is more efficient time-wise then Option 2 but the second option really lets all the players into the tournament so we they can all have a good time,
i personally think starting right off with the tournament styled brackets is best, we can discuss about having the wb's on a bo1 or bo3 format when were at the lan, if we really think we won't have enough time(which i doubt, more then 12 hours is easily enough) we can go ahead with the bo3 wb matchs all the way long

3.PRIZE BREAKDOWN: normal breakdown is good i find, 70% 1st, 20% 2nd, 5% 3rd

4.BRACKET STYLES: seeding players seems pretty bias to the other players i find so i think a randomly drawn bracket selection is fine, unless theres too many players who think otherwise we can also always seed players.

5.ENTRANCE FEE: i think a fee of around 25$-35$ would be reasonable, remember the more the fee is up the bigger the pool is, it's all up to you guys.

6.MAPS: a medium-large sized map pool but we need enough maps for the 1st match of every round so i think a 10 map pool is enough, suggested maps are:
Blue Storm, Python, Tau Cross, Longinus, Andromeda, Wuthering, Colesseum, Othello, Peaks, and for the final map we can either go to like an oldschool map like Luna or a strategic map like Monty Hall or something like Troy, i'd go with Luna for the last map.

also for maps if u make some big ass pool of old bad maps i probably won't go. maps like luna are so old/stupid/imbalanced. seriously dont ruin the tournament just cuz its maps you like. make it relevant maps like WCG maps. the wcg maps are courage maps which means anyone can mass practice them on iccup.

I'm going to PM TT1 on GG.net . I'd like to see $25 or less for an entrance fee. Fayth said he'd put up a pretty nice chunk of cash, so we don't need to bankrupt anyone just to have a big prize pool.
For those worried about early start times... just come the day before. I'm sure it won't be TOO much of a hassle.
But, if we want to have a 1 day LAN, we need to start at 9-10 am and go 12-13 hours or more. I think that a two day LAN would be best, run everything up until LB finals / Grand final on the first day, and then play the rest the 2nd day or something like that... that way, the people that are eliminated and don't want to stay can leave, and the people who have made it that far will still be there (possible prize money will cover the extra day's hotel cost).

I think a 2 day event would be ideal.
Day 1 starting at around: 6 PM to 12AM for group battles ( this way people from the GTA will be able to leave at 12 Noon and not 3-4am at night)
Day 2 starting at around: Cafe opening time TO (6 hrs + Cafe opening time) for the 8 men double elim
Either way, whether it be 1 day or 2 day event, for the people outside of the Montreal area we'd have to sleep in Montreal for ONE day anyways. Unless you plan on driving at 12-1AM at night after a long day (in the case of a 1 day event).

A bit over 4 hours if you drive fast.
Express train is also slightly over 4 hours, non-express is 5 at least. Train will run you $70+ one way Bus is a bitch (6+ hours?) but is hella cheap, if you book now you can probably get $10 tickets to Montreal (prices increase the later you book).
Flying from Toronto I've never done but if you've got the money (probably a bit under $100 one way).
I'm interested in coming, I'll get stomped but that's okay.

By the way, imo you guys are going to want to bring large bottles of Gatorade or some other sports drink to this event. Even if the place isn't a veritable sauna, I'm betting it'll still be hot, so expect to be sweating a lot.
Drinking alcohol during the tournament is a bad idea. Alcohol dehydrates you, which will only worsen the dehydration from your sweating. (Dehydration is the cause of hangovers, btw.)

I think the big difficulty with getting people to come out to a StarCraft LAN, as opposed to tournaments for console games, is that there are really only two reasons for people to come:
1. To win good money (if you're a top player).
2. To socialize with the other players.
In contrast, console game tournaments have the added benefit that you get to play against guys from outside your city or local area.
Unfortunately, as Haji's tale corroborates, StarCraft players generally don't place a whole lot of value on social activities. 
Anyway, to take full advantage of reason #2, I suggest holding at least one teams tournament, preferably several. E.g. you can have 2v2 games, 3v3 games, 3v3 BGH games, 3v3 TMA games, 3v3 TMM games, other ums team games, and even team melee games. This is because imo team games benefit far more from the social aspect of actually being beside your teammates, compared to the benefits that 1v1 games get at a LAN. Also, since people travelling from out-of-province will most likely be travelling as a group, they'll probably decide to team up with each other as well, so you wouldn't have to create many teams on-the-spot or at random.
Edit: actually, this is another reason to have some multiplayer console or emulated games there in addition to SC: it will give people another reason to come out. You could even plan to run some small console game tournaments, like for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, or for Super Bomberman 5 (SNES, Japanese), for instance. (SB4 and SB5 are a LOT of fun to play with 4 people, btw.  ) In fact, I think running more tournaments in general at the event will increase the # of people who will decide to attend.

thanks for the input Bill ! I'll definitely be doing everything I can to try and get as many people as possible to come. just trying to confirm a location and entrance fee and everything will be much easier after that.
I'm hoping for approximately 30-35 people to attend, and with a price of about $25. In my opinion, anything significantly more than that (price-wise) will turn people off (because who wants to shell out ~$40 for a tournament you know you have 0% chance of winning??? nobody.) so I think $25 is a pretty decent and reasonable range.

Hmm is there a confirmed date yet? I'm coming home (Toronto) late August, and I could possibly roll that into the first week of September if the date was official. If I do go, I can give people from Whitby and eastward a ride. If you can get to Whitby via car / bus / GO, I'd pick you up at the station and give you a ride.

Oh sick, I'm 100% unless it goes too late into the 31st. It's a 6 hour drive and I'd have to be home that Sunday to make a flight. Maybe a better plan would be to train into Montreal and then fly from there...

I doubt it will last long on the 31st if it goes into a 2 day event. The big day will be Saturday (probably an all-day affair) , and then if we go into sunday it will extend only into early afternoon just to finish it up most likely.
I am also working on a deal to get some hardware to give out as prizes / giveaways for the LAN. More details will come once the actual location is finalized.
Just spoke with TT1, he said he's found 2 places, and is just checking out a few more then we'll make a decision.

Yes! Sorry if it took a while i was looking around for the best deal even tho i knew in the end Gamer's World would be the best place to hold the tournament in and that they would give us the best deal, this morning i went to see them and made a deal with them for August 30-31(Saturday + Sunday). Honestly they're the nicest people ever and the owner told me when he heard WCG was canceled for bw that they were so dissapointed, he was more then happy to help us host the lan and gave us a very nice deal.
Positive: Big area, they're giving us all their pc's for the first day (20 pcs), they open at 10am and close at 11pm however if we don't finish the tournament the first day we can continue it the next day free of charge until it takes us to finish it (no timeline), so we don't need to rush the tournament on the first day, we can host it a little bit later and make sure that everyone has enough time to show up and also we can make that LAN vs LAN war against Sweden if you guys want.
Location/Direction: The PC room is located at metro(subway in french is metro) Snowdon, right when you leave the metro and come outside you'll see a Mcdonald's at your right and a Tim Hortons to your left, you go to your left and cross the street and walk upwards for 5 seconds and you'll see the PC room (you have to walk on some stairs).

For the people coming from outside Montreal by car I honestly have no idea how to give you directions because i don't drive(like which exit to come out from etc.), i'll look around but if someone knows like which exit they have to come out from and where to turn etc. please post, also im sure if you call them and ask for directions they'll gladly help you.
Entrance Fee: Now heres the deal that we made, entrance fee is 25$, the way we calculated is we estimated at least 25 players showing up(minimum, theres probably going to be like 35 players), 25 x 25 gave 625$ total, they'll take 300$ for renting out the whole place for the whole days and for using all the pcs, also for the following days it takes us to finish the tournament, plus if you don't have headphones or something you can give them your medical card or something and they'll give you free headphones for the day.
So that leaves us 325$ as the prize pool alone from the entrance fee, take into consideration that we only calculated it for 25 players and this is without the money a few players might put into the prize pool(which they're not forced too at all), the owner also told me there will be alot of players which will be coming for the lan as well(regular players who show up for our lans that arnt known), also alot of the players are bringing their friends so im sure the pool will be fairly big. Im pretty confident that we can easily reach 40 players.
Organization/Tournament Style: We will have a round robin to start off the tournament, most likely 4 players per group with 2 players advancing from each group playing bo1's with each player from the group, for the round robin we will have seeds (we'll have 2 strong players per group because if we end up with 4 favorites in the same group it would'nt be really fair and would take away alot of the fun for the final tournament).
After the round robin we will have a tournament style bracket(around 16 players most likely) with a WB and LB. Both will be bo3's and the grand final will be a BO7 (WB gets 1-0 lead or if we really wanna start it off equal they can start at 0-0).
Maps: Maps are still not picked, this is our tournament, we control every aspect of it and no 1 player will be in charge of picking the maps, we will together as a group make a poll in the following weeks and select the maps, however the fairest and best pool imo is something like
Tau + Longi + Python + WCG Mappool, please discuss about the map selection. Also discuss about the LAN vs LAN war vs Sweden if your interested or not (Eme please post if your still going to organise the LAN).
Sponsor: I have no idea about this aspect, Xeris is in charge and theres no pressure, if we get anything extra then thats great and if not its totally fine, the way things look tho Xeris posted on tl.net that we might some extra hardware to give out at the LAN, i have no idea about this and you'd have to ask Xeris. Also Xeris they'll be posting the news about the tournament on their site shortly, i know you were asking for that so i told them to post it.

Yes, for planes it was 2008. I drove through the border early 2008 with a birth certificate, and I'm almost positive driving without a passport ends in 2009.

Passport is required in June, 2009 via driving, according to my sister.
edit; and why are we starting Day 1 so early? I guarantee it wont take more than 6 hours to do round robin, considering the fact that we have the entire cafe to ourselves (20+ pcs?). If we start at say, 3 PM, then the people from the GTA can actually leave at 9 - 10AM in the morning instead of 4-5AM. 3 PM till closing, assuming closing time is 11 PM (IIRC) gives us 8 hours, which is plenty of time to do round robin.

It's better to be safe and sorry. I have a feeling we're going to get a lot more players than I'm expecting, and we're going to need a lot of time to get things going.
LAN's take an assload of time to actually get done... because games could take long, people could take a long time setting up their gear, starting next matches, people will be chatting / socializing and not paying as much attention to being efficient, etc... there are a lot of things to consider.
I'd say ~1pm is probably the latest we can start ... later than that is really pushing it IMO (assuming we get between 35-50 people which it's looking like right now).

I think having just the wcg map pool provides a sufficient amount of maps to play on, but it's just my opinion. Deciding the map pool is basically the only thing we have left to do, so share your opinion guys.

I've asked a couple times and haven't confirmed anything.
I was originally planning on driving, but if this runs into Sunday, that isn't viable for me. Is anyone driving from Toronto that would be willing to give me a ride? Does anyone have a place or hotel room in Montreal that they'd be willing to split / share / let me crash on the floor?
As of now, the two options I'm considering are:
- Be in Whitby Saturday morning, get a ride in, stay over Saturday night, fly out Sunday afternoon.
- Fly into Montreal Saturday morning, cab in, stay over Saturday night, get a ride out Sunday afternoon.
- Not go because it's too expensive to train in and hotel.
Just wondering if people are in similar situations and could help me out. Of course I'd pay for gas and stuff.

Also a note:
1) Register for the tournament on the website (see link in 1st post). When I leave for my flight, all names pre-registered will be *FINAL* - I will add the rest of the people who have SAID they are coming, but I will be marking who has registered before the cutoff. These people will be eligible for the raffle.
2) Check in will be from 11:30-12:30 , and we'll start actually playing at around 12:30. So MAKE SURE you are punctual and on time.
3) Expect some kind of dinner break after the group stage has finished.

Ah God, does anyone have a way of contacting Xeris, or TT1 or whoever is organizing this? I have a flight arriving at 2:00 PM Saturday, and after luggage + Taxi over it'll probably be 3:30. I wouldn't think this would be too much of a big deal if I delay a few games (considering this starts at 12:30 I think?), but obviously I want to confirm before I book a flight.
So yea, I hope he's not on a plane yet or something.

i have like 350+ cause i was taking pics all the way up to Montreal and back but there's a large chunk in the middle of the LAN...it's just taking FOREVER to upload them all
she was nervous about taking pictures there so she had turned the flash off...lol that could be a reason that you didn't notice
