EVER OSL 2007 SEMIFINAL MATCH A
0130 Pacific Time / 0430 Eastern Time / 1830 Seoul Time

(T)UpMagiC vs (Z)Jaedong
Southpaw vs Legend Killer

Players

(T)UpMagiC is a scene favorite these days, a player known for an array
of daring game openings, counter-intuitive tech choices, and sound
transitions into orthodox play. Like (T)BoxeR before him, Up is gifted
with the MagiC to entertain through novelty gameplan alone, whilst
victory is often times simply the closing remark to an already vastly
                        satisfying performance.

Having risen from a difficult round-of-16 group and boldly delivered in a
sensational quarterfinal encounter, (T)UpMagiC will now be thoroughly
tested in his one weak match-up against an opponent widely said to be
                        the current "ZvT Incarnate."

Don't be fooled though, if there's one player out there whose ability to
play is not accurately reflected by his stats, he's (T)UpMagiC.
Deliberately absent from a recent Proleague match, our magician
has surely conjured up a wealth of deathdealers in anticipation of the
                        opening pledge.

In the wake of (Z)sAviOr's decline, a new hallmark of dominance in the
prestigious ZvT match-up inevitably revealed himself to be (Z)Jaedong,
whose efficiency and lethality in the ongoing battle against Terran is
surpassed by no known Zerg contemporary.

To paraphrase Marencielo: "(Z)Jaedong attacks with an abandon that is
relentless but hardly reckless - invigorated by a confidence of having little
                        or nothing to lose."

Arriving at the height of semifinal by way of feeble Terran resistance,
(Z)Jaedong is met by a gatekeeper that is unlike any other of his kind.
For once he has everything to gain or lose as the tension rides high
and the stakes higher. Can (Z)Jaedong overcome a strategic-inclined                         veteran OSLer and ascend to the zenith of professional StarCraft
                        competition?

Many seem to think so, others do not; but only time will tell that tale.

Battlefields

                                                            Set 1 - Persona
                                                            Set 2 - Blue Storm
                                                            Set 3 - Fantasy II
                                                            Set 4 - Katrina
                                                            Set 5 - Persona

Rooting for Up.

That first picture contains great shots of both players.

I really hope that Up.magic will win, if only for the sake of an entertaining finals (Jaedong vs P is no thnx).

Voted Jaedong though; probably going to be 3-1.

I devote my heart to UpMagiC... but I sincerely have difficulties imagining him as victorious, especially on those maps. It really IS his worst matchup, if he hasn't magically improved in the past few weeks.

But fuck it, imma skip school and cheer for the true magician, the neo emperor, the man with the flame who knows how to make Starcraft into ART.
I'm just worried .

Do lurkers attacks hit units under swarm? They are classified as ranged right?
EDIT: Nvm, the splash damage. Oh well, at least UP got decently far.

UpMagic is NOT the neo Emperor. You can't be neo Emperor with your TvP being better than your TvZ! Period.

I think it's got a lot to do with the fact that zerg can use the dark swarm to delay pushes quite a bit. The early advantage of M>Z with micro is negated, for instance, with a few zerglings placed in the terran dark swarm to force the push to be delayed until firebats, a few lurkers placed in some dark swarms delay a push until tanks, etc. When used right, the neutral dark swarm kind of ends up being an extra help until the zerg player can start manually dropping their own dark swarms.

Just a guess, anyways.

EDIT:
Savior kinda abused that fact against like, CuteAngel or whatnot, forced Cute to mass up firebats and just tore him apart.

Jaedong will, unfortunately, tear Upmagic apart. He is very good against innovation, as he has already shown several times against Light and other Terran players, and the map pool other than Katrina obviously favors him. Upmagic's only chance may be that Jaedong has recently lost 3 games (Gasp!) quite mundanely in ZvT (losing to the early MM+Bat push, for example, and his ZvT looked very human and vincible in his past few games), breaking his 12371203784732497234 win streak in that category.

If I remember right, Upmagic said in an interview that he was a school friend with Jaedong or something like that. As much as I want to see Upmagic win this, Jaedong's odds are probably a lot better. Wouldn't be the first time I've said that before a match only to be wildly disproven though, so an entertaining match going to the 5th is all I can ask for~

Too bad we could've seen (T)Hwasin vs (Z)Jaedong tonight ;\.

My vote is on (T)UpMagiC for tonight simply because (Z)Jaedong as failed to impress me on the new maps and always comes up with the same approach, which I'm sure (T)UpMagiC will counter.

I don't think of Jaedong always using the same approach. I've always enjoyed watching his art ZvT.

It'll be interesting to see what Up comes "up" with to stop Jaedong.

I'm hoping for Upmagic to take this. In a matchup where the odds are as one-sided as this, I can't help but go for the underdog, even if that underdog is a Terran. Upmagic should make it exciting either way though.

Upmagic will have a uphill battle tonight.

Persona is a bad map for T, its too easy to get expos with lurks... and persona is being played twice.

I voted Jaedong in the Liquibet because I think he's going to win.

However, both of these players are excellent - Jaedong in straight-up ZvT and UpMagiC with always upsetting something. There is no way that this Bo5 is going to be lackluster and I look forward to watching the VODs when it finishes.

I hope that there's some happy brotherhood congratulations for whoever wins between them. Maybe a hug onstage or something.

Any TL-people going to I-Park Mall to watch the games today? I'm thinking of going but my lame friends don't wanna pay the KTX ticked price to be there on time, so I guess I'll have to go by myself.

Anyways, I'm betting my money on Jaedong but I think Up has a better shot than people think. There should be some great games today none the less.

I get this nagging feeling that Jaedong is just going to slaughter UpMagiC, no matter how good Up looks on paper (and I think I'd rather have Up win too)

Either way, this is actually an awesome round of semifinals and finals for that matter, most exciting OSL in a LONG time.

Personally, I'm not that excited about this matchup. Bisu vs Stork is where I believe the real final is happening. Both those players will show an exemplary one sided rape of Jaedong when they win (I like Up, but no chance). Jaedong doesn't seem to have the mind of a player like Savior. Very good at timing, mechanics, standard play. However to beat either of these Protoss geniuses he;ll have to come up with a lot more than he's ever proven before.

Very favourable map draw for Jaedong.

I think it will be 3-0. Up's stats vs Zerg players of a decent calibur are horrible. If you look at his games vs Jaedong, GGplay, Savior, Yarnc, Gorush and Luxury, he's 25%.

ZvT is a harder matchup for zergs though, so this could work in his favour.

Jaedong plays very good against terran fast exper. I think Up has to try different cheese rushes. And btw i'm almost sure that the game will be close... very close, ended with 3-2 score. Only dunno which player wins.

Hm... but Jaedong is the one who looks good on paper.

Jaedong (ZvT) : 30-16 (65.22%)
UpMagiC (TvZ) : 9-12 (42.86%)

Based on statistics, Jaedong has a high probability of coming out on top. Jaedong has already beaten UpmagiC once before, earlier this year.

Jaedong 3-1 or 3-2. It's his first bo5, isn't it? If so, nerves will cause him to lose at least 1 game, but skill-wise he should rape Upmagic.
Jaedong vs. Hwasin would have been a much more fitting matchup...

Sorry, I should claify what I meant - every race has a "hard" matchup so to speak. For P it's PvZ, Z it's ZvT and T it's TvP. Even though some a good at the harder matchups it comes back to the T>Z>P>T BWism.

My heart is rooting for yet another dark-horse terran, but Jaedong has such impressive stats and ZvT gameplay - although lately he seemed to want the win too much and too early, like in game2 against Light.

The vast majority of protoss players struggle against zerg. ZvP was always the "easy win" for zergs.

His mecha builds on Monty Hall were quite good TvZ, I've always thought that UpMagiC is a lot better on maps he practises on.

Okay, I get what you mean now then. I think the real point though is that Bisu has proved that racial imbalances mean nothing if you're skilled, just like Savior proved with ZvT earlier. For the mediocre progamer though PvZ seems to remain a challenge, as does ZvT, even for Savior these days. Anyway, you guys aren't really arguing about anything.

This isn't really true for Jaedong, you know.

Sorry, I should claify what I meant - every race has a "hard" matchup so to speak. For P it's PvZ, Z it's ZvT and T it's TvP. Even though some a good at the harder matchups it comes back to the T>Z>P>T BWism.

tell that to Bisu

Bisu is the only one who doesn't have trouble against zerg.

The vast majority of protoss players struggle against zerg. ZvP was always the "easy win" for zergs.

Just because Bill Gates earns easy money doesn't mean that all computer programmers can also be rich. Bill Gates is a single individual. Such as Bisu.

That's his point. -.-

No, it's not. -_-;

He thinks that Bisu's dominance against zerg eliminates the notion that P's weakness is PvZ.

I'm saying that a single case doesn't matter. Just like Bill Gates's success doesn't mean that computer science is an easy field.

That wasn't the main point of the original statement. *shrug*
He never cared about one single person. Sure, somebody can break the mold, but the mold says: PvZ is hard.

Enjoy the games. Jaedong fighting~

Ax the statement about speedlings. Jaedong used the early gas to start his lair while he took his natural. Two factory build from Up, both of which are in his base. Insane, I know.

Spire started for Jaedong, still only two hatcheries. Jaedong uses an overlord to scout Up's main while he uses around 10 speedlings (yes, he got speed relatively early) to kill Up's initial vulture.

Up with maybe six speedy vultures. Spire done for Jaedong. Up has zero anti-air.

Up plants a few mines and tries to use them to clear the zerglings from under Jaedong's dark swarm. It works. He gets a few vultures into Jaedong's main, but they die almost immediately to mutalisks and zerglings.

Vultures broke through to Jaedongs Mainbase, getting ALL the drones there. Mutas went to counter and are raping Up's mineral line right now - goliaths being reproduced, but cannot fight the mutas.EIGHT supply for up, FIFTEEN for Jaedong, but the mutas should win this.

Up sneaks more vultures in and kills a few more drones. Up trying to fight off Jaedong's initial mutalisks (six or so) with a bunker, but he can't sneak any marines into it. First goliath out for Up, which Jaedong kills.

Jaedong not mining at his main, but he has 2-3 drones going at his natural. Up down to like two SCVs.

Up has vultures parked at Jaedong's main and natural, so Jaedong isn't mining. But Up can't do anything. Zero SCVs. He just lifted all of his buildings and is floating them away to... I have no idea where he plans to go with them...

Oh, I think Up's going to try and park them under a dark swarm for the draw.

If Up had floated earlier before losing so many goliaths to the mutas he might even have taken this - but how should he have known that it would turn into such a situation.

Upmagic thought jaedong didn't have money for drones so that if he got a goliath under the dark swarm and killed the remaining lings he could draw the game by floating his buildings above the swarm with goli cover. It turns out jaedong did have enough money to make drones and Up just wasted 2 minutes of our lives

I think the bunker was simply not filled which he had in his mineral line - a bunker with 2 facs reinforcing goliaths might have been enough.

Think Jaedongs mutas were a little earlier than he predicted and he didn't get his scout through...

It was actually quite close, because if he had got a bunker with a few marines ready he'd have won.

Jaedong's early gas sped up his mutalisk timing, so it's very possible.

I don't see how that would have been a draw even if up managed to get the float buildings and goli darkswarm cover though. Muta regen hp so it would take an hour but it's still a guaranteed win for Jaedong.

From the replay it looks like jaedong could have killed the scv building the armory and delayed goliaths for a bit, but he went for the marine. I don't know if that was intentional or not.

My idea was rather: Float factories when still ~600 minerals. Produce goliaths under dark swarm so you get enough to chase mutas away. This way he lost pairs of 2 goliaths bit by bit instead of having them grouped. Anyway, I am not implying that he SHOULD have done it or KNOWN what the game would develop into.

Wow, bud you have to read what other people said before you speak.

As mentioned before the reason UP floated his buildings to the DS location was because he thought dong didn't have enough for any drones and perhaps would get a draw if anything.

Aesop here, reporting:

Upmagic has 2 wraiths out before Jaedong has his spire / spores finished, gets some overlord kills. By now 6 wraiths over Jae's base who does not have enough airpower to combat them yet. Counterattack with lings repelled by bats / rines at the wallin. Expansion started for Up.

bisu build.

Up does a cute job at harassing with wraiths, he has an "overlord in 2 volley" mass now. Loses some in a small skirmish, but his transition should be coming soon. 88 vs. 55 supply.

Mutalisks are now going crazy at Up's expansion. Up just wanted to send out a MM force but is forced to come back to defend. Mutas brutally mutilate the MM force and it looks good for Jaedong all of a sudden.

Jaedong controlling two harassing groups now, one at the main, one at the expansion. He is also ahead in supply. Finally groups up the two forces ot have almost 1 1/2 control groups and rapes Up's expansion - gg 2-0.

Korean watchers on Daum: "Lee Jaedong is a god."

It looked like Upmagic had the advantage, but Jaedong didn't lose many drones. Thus, his 3-hatch mutalisk succeeded, because he was so rich.

Jaedong has excellent Muta control, while UpMagic showed weak marine control when he lost his first offensive group of mnm force.

I think Up got a LITTLE too comitted with his wraiths, thinking he could save them somehow. An earlier transition to tower / MM could have served him better.

No we didn't.

We saw Jaedong micro one group, divert Up's army, retreat, and send in his second group. It was still "single control" at all times.

Added: Nice enough, sure, but this wasn't some absurd micromanagement. Players do it every time they get their opponents' attention before an MM or reaver drop.

Damnit why did Up move out so early with his marine group? Jaedong hadn't even started 3rd exp yet so up had all the time in the world to power and defend. I think he was very careless.

Upmagic should have won the game but he didn't kill drones with the wraiths despite Jaedong making a sunken instead of spore colony in his main. Only a handful of drones died and 2 base still > 1 base. I think it looked worse for Jaedong than it was early on, but once jaedong got a few mutas in the air he just mauled Upmagic.

up unfortunately only killed overlords and hardly any drones, jaedong had 2base mining for too long

Upmagics harass was horrible. He didnt kill almost no drones, only overlords, that gave Jaedong lots of resources, and poof, once he gets enough supply he gets like streams of mutas. So poor by Upmagic not having vessel with irridate earlier. But great play by Jaedong. Doulbe muta harass was so awsome :o

Even if Upmagic had managed to kill the spire, which would have been huge, it wouldn't have done nearly as much damage to Jaedong as killing the 10++ drones he could have managed in that time. I couldn't believe Up targeted the spire when Jaedong had a poorly placed spore at his nat and a very late spore at his main.

That spore at natural covered his drones

but the main was disappointing, could've raped it clean or at least shut it down and made it into 1base mining

The games are pure entertainment without the emotional investment of Bisu vs Savior and the like. I'm starting to like these two quite a bit.
We believe that we invent symbols. The truth is that they invent us; we are their creatures, shaped by their hard, defining edges.

At first, he only had 2 wraiths in Jaedong's base. Killing drones with 2 wraiths takes a long time, so it's better to target the overlords. It hurts to lose many overlords just before you want to get mutas, so Jaedong could only get a few scourges and mutas at first, had to build another spore in his main, and then slowly stock up in overlord and muta count.
I think Upmagic did the right thing with his wraiths (Jaedong was in trouble), but lost because of sloppy M&M control and probably because his transition from wraith to expansion and M&M wasn't smooth/good enough.

Nobody will ever perfectly micro 2 groups of muts in different places. And clearly, Jaedong hasn't done this today, though he did execute 2 muta raids at once with very good control.

I've been playing some Team Melee with friends lately and it totally just occurred to me how amazing 2 people controlling 2 different groups of muts at the same time.. Just frightening..

Excellent execution by Jaedong, there's no denying he's a ZvT monster.

Yeah, sure, when the overlords are dead you can target drones of course.
But overlords were a higher priority for Upmagic at first (to delay muta/scourge), so I can understand that he didn't go after the drones at first.

That's because he hasn't lost 3-0 in a Starleague final to Bisu yet.

But don't worry, we'll all see that face in two weeks. ^^

I for one would love a Stork versus Dong final because they both lick balls when it comes to PvZ and ZvP alike. Ha ha ha.

Too bad this won't happen because of Stork's bad karma. Oh well.

I'm surprised a pro would not have his marines back at the side minerals, then load bunker at a frontal assault. He must have slipped up.

I just noticed JaeDong's name is actually 제동, not 재동. Any reason it's not written as JeDong (as standard romanization would suggest? I didn't want to make a thread just on that...

Bar Stork's losses to Savior, iirc his PvZ has been quite good of late. I'd give him the advantage over Jaedong, and the two of them did have an entertaining game in the groups.

I voted for who I believe would give us the best final. By beating UpMagiC, Jaedong has already finished this OSL in 2nd place.

The first game he started with a bunker rushed which crippled Yellow.
The next two games though he killed Yellow with the bunker rushes.

if you mean the difference between 재 and 제, then no, the two are not the same. As for romanizations, yeah, the difference between the two is small enough that I'm sure there's tons of confusion.

someone add up the duration. the 2nd game in this semi was 14 minutes and change. the third was definitely less than 5. the first less than 10. it must be less than 30 mins overall.

He was at RoV position on Fantasy and he scouted speedlings, yet he only defended his 'main entrance', he didn't scout or put marines at the offensive minerals. Jaedong could just mine and run through. I'm a bit disappointed, but at least the 2 first games were more entertaining than your normal TvZ.

You don't need to think about "legend of the fall" when either Bisu or Stork is in the final: they will win the final.

But if Jaedong takes this OSL serious and prepares a LOT for this final, then he can put up a good fight and maybe even win... his current ZvP performance suggests otherwise, but in SC there's always an upset every now and then.

The romanization would be:

제 = je
재 = jae (jä)

For swedes it's pretty simple since we have "ä" and "e" which is almost exactly the same thing as ㅐ and ㅔ. It may be confusing for americans who haven't studied a foreign language before... I don't know.

I hear koreans generally don't make a big difference between them though when speaking. They pretty much say "ae" most of the time no matter what symbol is used so the correct official romanization would be "Je Dong", but the romanization of korean is very often not what it actually sounds like. Take the vowel ㅡ for example which is pronounced like the "u" in "gum", but romanized as "eu".

I'm not korean and just study it for fun so please tell me if I'm wrong.

Sorry for OT.

That's not gonna happen.

If he could take Stork, nevermind Bisu, he'd have beaten Stork in the RO16, advanced as C1, beaten Flash, and face Bisu in the semi next week; whereas Stork would've played UpMagiC tonight instead.

Ah well, g'nite all.

GJ Jaedong. Pretty much a lock in win here, but I didn't think he'd do it that easy.

Weird though, we're going to head into a PvZ OSL Final with the P as favourite.

I don't think this has happened since Garimto vs Yellow in SKY?

The Korean class is really, really small (like 5 people?), so I'm a bit jelous because they probably learn a lot because they get a lot of individual coaching (as opposed to Chinese or Japanese class which is stacked beyond the teachers' capabilities).

UpMagic spawned at RoV and went 14 CC. Then he built 2 rax and a bunker at his choke. Jaedong spawned at Nostalgia and went for 2 hatch speedlings. He used 2 drones to mine out the small mineral patch at RoV, and rushed in with zerglings. UpMagic did not have enough units to defend, Jaedong's zerglings took out the bunker and then it was gg.

Unfortunately, there's no vod for Gorush vs Hoony on ROV, i think it was pretty much the same from what i've understood (i didn't see the game):
Up walled at his natural and made few marines to defend the wall. He ignored to defend the minerals that block the second entrance. JD mined through and raped him with lings.

We are still 9 points from the top I don't think we can make it unless we vote for the underdog in a big game (like I did with Mind :D)

Eh... 9 points isn't that much really. I'm missing pretty much all of my proleague votes (-_-) and I'm still hovering at 10 behind. When I was getting them about 2/3rds right I was gaining ground pretty quickly. There's still probably around 100 points to vote on, so eh. Personally I'm hoping goes into "I'm going to vote on x inane upset so I have a chance of #1!" mode so I can skip up a more or less guranteed 5-10 ranks per big match (I wonder how many people will vote for Jaedong to beat Bisu if it happens hahaha). ;p

In the first game, even if up had managed to float under a swarm, wouldnt his building still die? Swarm doesnt protect buildings from range, only units right?

Well Jaedong has about two-three weeks to just practice ZvP, so hopefully we'll see an awesome finals!

I don't see why you'd get banned, even though it sorta looks like he's making a DDR motion O_o
I don't want to read through this whole thread, can someone tell me if any games are worth watching?

Well, do you enjoy watching Jaedong rape?

Even so, the games weren't terribly uninteresting. UpMagic did UpMagic-y type things which held a little bit of excitement. And Jaedong's play is just plain immaculate. The game on Persona was interesting at least, and the Blue Storm game was entertaining as well. Of the three games, those two were the more fun ones to watch in my opinion.

You could always wait for DjEtterStyle's newspost to determine which games to watch, and I'll be putting up a battle report later once I've finished.

It is indeed "abandon".

P.S. Game 2 didn't seem like that much of a comeback. Jaedong lost a few overlords but annihilated every wraith on the map soon afterwards.

That 2-group muta harass was HOT. I think we should call him Lee "DP" Jaedong now.

Game 3 was a yawn rape.

Wow good games, a bit disappointed in up's wraith micro, he didn't scv-stack them and he really could have scored a lot more drones. Awesome play by Jaedong overall, his mutas are so strong. Did he ever even get a hydra den in these games?
