What is Ascension? - Ascension is the first tournament I ever commentated, back in 2007-2008. - It's a King of the Hill format tournament with equal race distribution. - This is the 3rd installment of Ascension. Ascension: World Tour Ladder Qualification Rules - Open ladder qualification on https://shieldbattery.net/ - North America, South America and Europe are all free to enter. (really only China + Korea are excluded) - Sign up for the Ascension League on ShieldBattery https://shieldbattery.net/leagues/HtzaPaZLbdCIO59wtFuASg/ascension-world-tour/info - you MUST use your most known ID. - you MUST play at least 40 games to qualify. - you MUST play only 1 race during qualification. - Top 3 ranking players from each race (Terran, Zerg and Protoss) will qualify for the final tournament. - if you qualify, you will be required to take a few pictures + short video of yourself for production purposes. (similar to the Ascension: Rebirth video) - you will also be required to film an interview of yourself (face + voice). - webcam or phone can be used for these. - anyone who chooses not to or cannot fulfill these requirements will be replaced with the next player down the rankings of their race.

Ascension: World Tour Final Tournament Rules - 3 groups of 3 (1 of each race) - King of the Hill format groups consisting of 8 games with a possible tie-break game. - Maps chosen by incoming player. Maps played are eliminated. Map pool resets when 1 map remains. (tournament map pool to be announced after ladder qualification period -- it will be out of that map pool but not as large) - Player with the most wins at the end of 8 maps (or 9 if tiebreaker occurs) will advance to the finals. - Finals will be the same format.

- $25 per map win 1st: $600 2nd: $360 3rd: $240

Other thoughts / rules
I will play in the ladder stage for fun + learning about the styles of the competitors to better cast the tournament. I will NOT be playing in the tournament.
Everyone of all skills is welcome to play. I hope that everyone boots up shieldbattery and has a fun couple of weeks laddering together. I think community ladders, like when BSL comes around, are a great and exciting time for the scene in general. On shieldbattery, it will be a more even playing ground than on battle.net.
I have final say on every matter in this tournament.
For the tournament portion, it will take 2 play days for the top 3 players, 1 play day for the other players. The hours may not be ideal. The latency may not be ideal. I think both will be OK at least. After the tournament I will take feedback on making a better show + competition in the future.
I've been waiting for a tourney like this (as a viewer) for a while now (based on a few hints the last couple of years), big thanks for organizing! Nice promotion of shieldbattery as well. GLHF to everyone!
Im a bit sad that everyone is limited to playing one race in the qualifiers, as Shieldbattery fully supports racepicking on their ladder, but it's quite understandable considering the format of the final tournament I guess. And I definitely see the payoff in the sense that we wont get many mirror matchups in the final tourney.

This tournament may seem like if you're not going to be at the top why try at all. I can assure you that you should sign up, because the queue times are short and the latency is low. Shield Battery when it is popular is the best server there is for foreigners. If we can get ZZZero to do BSL ladder phase on there it would be amazing

I must say, the removed fog of war on the minimap for expansions is a really nice feature. Not having to study and memorize expansion locations on every single map is a huge deal. Especially for the inactive/casual players.

The only thing I can figure would have any effect on mineral visuals would be having Real-time Lighting turned on/off (e.g. the setting doesn't match what you have in your bnet version). There is no code to change rendering in any way from Blizzard's stuff, outside of the FoW changes.
from my experience playing on fullscreen and changing the gamma (to something brighter) makes the minimap contrast between the scouted and unscouted FoW parts of the map way easier on the eyes

I agree, give spot to nyoken. Grimeboss super BM. He basically left a BSL gosuleague finals vs stryker too cause he lost the first couple of games. Ended up coming back much later and just bbs'd the rest of the series. Was really unfortunate

As all of these took time to occur I decided to put in Nyoken as the last Terran to move the tournament forward. My apologies to Terrans further down the list. If I do another tournament like this I will probably just have a translator for the Spanish-only speaking players.

for the face of foreign broodwar to disregard his own tournament rules seems to be counterproductive to the expansion of foreign broodwar in all. promoting a foreign tournament welcome to all skill levels and players, and then selecting one that doesnt qualify just to help build his brand.
i dont know some of the terran players who dropped out and ive never heard of exit so nyoken is probably better anyways but for integrity purposes it seems wrong for a foreign broodwar scene that is already hard to survive. in this instance, why would anyone who cannot be top 10 foreign even be given the illusion that they could qualify and play in a tournament against some of the bigger streamers and brands that already exist in foreign broodwar.

Bit weird but at some point as a tournament organizer you gotta get on with it, can't wait forever. Feels bad for exit that being said.
For your other points, first of all the foreign scene is doing just fine, regardless of this one tournament. CPL9 just finished with a record amount of players, bwcl season 58 is in the final sprint, and NSL 6 is just around the corner. There is also BSL 2v2.
And finally, you misread what artosis said, "everyone is welcome to play" (the ladder stage) to give SB more activity is not quite the same as "everyone has a chance to qualify". The qualifier is a way to generate some extra activity on SB and so it helps anybody on the platform (whether you even play in ascension or not). Bit like BSL, a lot of people compete even though they have no chance to make it to the main tournament.
As all of these took time to occur I decided to put in Nyoken as the last Terran to move the tournament forward. My apologies to Terrans further down the list. If I do another tournament like this I will probably just have a translator for the Spanish-only speaking players.

That's because the originals had problems that had to be fixed! That was the whole point of the map contest in itself. Paradiso is a gosu map, pretty similar to vermeer but a bit less clunky.

They (Paradiso, Sand Storm, Third Impact) are all just as new, literally. Whether it subjectively feels new to you or not based on the map features is irrelevant.
I recall hawk vs nyoken when nyoken had lifted his rax and ebay and flown them out into the map for scouting with hawk’s hydra already having killed some. The caster explained that hawk had no idea that nyoken might be going for a mech switch because he hadn’t yet seen the factories. It’s not ideal.
