holy shit big thanks for the heads up I would've missed it. I hope Horang2 puts up a fight. I don't want to see a 3-0 boring stomp.

Hype, first game this ASL I'm going to watch live.

Hoping for that Rain vs Last semis, quality PvP should be a treat. My prediction is we won't have any one base DT (hah, one can dream). 3-1 for Rain with solid two base play (and one 3 gate vs obs opening), Mini's win will be with some sick one base reaver control.

I made a rational prediction in the TL writeup so as to maintain the sites credibility, but I really think Horang2 has a chance here.

Whoa, I can watch this live and still be alive for work tomorrow!

I think it’s gonna be 3-2. I think both players are closer to equal in pvp.

Dumb question, but is there any way to cast an Afreeca stream from my phone to the TV like Youtube? I live in two locations, and my current one doesn't have a computer. I've watched all the other matches on YouTube after they finished.

My goooood what a sick game. Horang2 played a little safe after he had his big lead, making Rain earn it... and earn it he did. Superior reaver micro + he saw the Templar warping in with his reaver drop. (And Tastosis underrated how sick Rains micro was to get out with both shuttles and two reavers). That set up the make or break push before Templars had storm. Fuck I hope this goes 5

Oof, after losing a game with a perfect opening where you kill a nexus and 9 workers, you've got to be worried.

Horang2 made no use of his advantage, strange play. Rain reaver control was excellent though.

Rain's pressure was very well calculated, keeping a group o goons outside of Horang2 natural to poke the front while driving his shuttle in between the main and the expo made him turn that game, that game was close just because Rain's reavers did almost zero dmg to probes, very unlucky scrabs all game long...

having your reavers that far forward without speed is absolutely asking for the shuttle snipe there.

Rain's attacks made no sense to me, but somehow that constant pressure worked out, nice.

It seems very effective against Horang2, when he's getting pushed, Horang2 makes no counter play himself, and just focuses on defending. In PvP with Reavers or Templar, it's attackers advantage, so I suppose Rain played to that.

he was trying to get the main army of horang2 into a bad position so he could attack top left or mineral only with guerrilla zealot attacks, when horang2 overcomited his army to defend 1 place, rain took advantage of the play he was looking for all game long.

Late game pvp is all about army positioning and engage angles.. rain was forcing bad placement with every "attack" he made.

horang2 coulda've turtled that game a little bit better if he didnt rush for the kill with the 2-1 upgrades timming.

But he was doing that while it was still 2 base vs 2 base, especially trying to move up that small ramp earlier on. Once it was 4 base vs 4 base, the play made a lot more sense.

I wonder what the right play there was. I think just doing some HT drops during the action was the way to go, but idk. At four base and not moving out seemed like a death sentence. Maybe he thought the 2 forge vs 1 forge would let him win the late game.

Rain is like Sun Tzu, just so much better than everyone else tactically and strategically. His army movements are just so beautiful and he's always probing, attacking multiple locations, looking to catch armies out of position. I can say he is now my favorite player.

he wasn't attacking up a ramp, he was forcing storms + getting few storms to probe lines and ht/goon to soften it up. meanwhile he was trying to attack the mineral only with small forces to tax horang2's multitask.

My favorite thing about Rain is that he literally never maxes out for more than 5 seconds. As soon as he maxes out he looks for a battle because he's confident in his macro and that he's just going to keep re-maxing and re-maxing faster than his opponent and eventually wear him down.

last is very dangerous, he prepares well for boX series and is not affraid to mindgame / cheese his opponent... oh did i mention he is VERY VERY VERY solid with standard play?

Rain vs Last can be seriously epic.

My favorite play today was in game 2, that call to go in with 4 goons + zealot into 4 goons + zealot when DT were on the way.

Don't think many players made that choice, but with his micro it was brilliant. This way he never had to give up map control, and he could apply to pressure until observers came... Forcing the DT to defend versus making a dash towards Rain base.He even knew it was DT earlier, but still built the robo as late as humanely possible. Horang2 was ahead economically, but was still forced to build so many cannons just to stay alive, beautiful. Against any other player, Horang2's opening would have been a solid build order advantage.

Rain clearly a step above Horang2 there. Obviously game 1 was odd but some good lessons for any Toss player in those games.

I feel like Rain is quite bad at decision making. And while Horang2 didn't capitalize on this, Last is a completely different beast. I think it will be 3-1 for Last.

I'll be amazed if Last manages to pull off an upset against Rain. Even then I doubt he could go up against Effort. One very tough road ahead for Last. I'd agree with you if his wrist were in better shape though.

Rain is really solid, I feel like he's improving more and more as time passes. If he can beat Last (notice his wrists aren't that good) I think he may able to take out FlaSh in future. But EffOrt is going to be the final boss.

Guys Rain lost to Sharp last KSL so I wouldn't count Last out too early.

GG's. Some interesting moments but a bit underwhelming series T_T
PvP'wise I would rather have Horang2 and Mini switch places and see Mini vs Rain instead. Though I doubt anyone right now can top Rains pvp. Just looking at the games, even when he made some weird decisions like attacking up that ramp over and over it didn't matter. He powered through Horang2 and I even think he could have done it while at the same time sipping his straw-drink xD Hoping for an effort vs Rain finals!

Well horang2 made some poor decisions himself, game 3 going 2 gate robo and nexus and then having only like 5 units he sends them to Rain's ramp and loses them all wtf?

I have never seen anyone luckier than Rain. He has been getting easy opponents/maps in so many tournaments now.

Lasts wrists are fine enough if he handled a grueling 5-match TvT.

Any idea why they seem to be rushing through the rest of the tournament? Felt like last ASL was mode spread out and they'd wait a week between each phase, but the Ro8 was all held within a week of each other and the semis both happen next week. Or is my memory fucking with me and this is how fast the tournament always goes?

This Ro8 was unusual. I vaguely remember Tastosis saying something about no GSL was the reason. But ASL also tends to speed up near the end just due to fewer number of games per round. It has usually been 2 games a week (Sun + Tue), so with 6 Ro24 groups and 4 Ro16 groups, that's several weeks with more games than Ro8..finals.

Let's not forget Horang2 was a proleague player, PvP specialist. He was way underrated coming into this series. With some more confidence in himself he probably could have taken it given that he seemed to get himself into good positions then collapse due to army movement and control. Rain is just showing why he's one of the greatest, didn't bring anything close to his best today and won.

Well that's a wreck.

Wish we could have spread the ro8 out a little more. So I could be a bit slower in consuming all the series.

Rain looking good for the finals. Sharp would have been the scarier opponent.

Mini Effort could be surprisingly good. Mini only gets PvZ. Still wish it was Snow instead. Hope effort gets through so we get a mixed race final.

ASL always delivers. We get to see some new players matched up that we haven’t seen in previous ASL’s. Mini versus Effort should be close. And I don’t mind who wins of those 2 or Last and Rain. Rain vs Effort final would be sick. But it also would be sick if Effort playes Last who used standard games instead of valkyries in the last ASL.

not exactly, the problem is not that he cannot go through 5 games at his best, the problem is that he cannot prepare for the games as hard as he would normally, to have his wrists healthy for a match he skips a lot of practice hours or something in that regard

Yeah I agree with this. Its impressive that Horang2 was able to get an advantage in every game, also impressive how seamlessly rain picked that apart. Horang2s actually made a lot of progress given how briefly hes been back in the scene.

Effort is going to get into mini's head. 3-0, max 3-1 in favor of Effort here. Effort had always been a ZvP beast.
Rain has poor decision making, but Last seems to be wearing a weight on his shoulders. This is the matchup I can see going all the way. BUT it could also be a complete blowout. It all depends on Last's mental fortitude.
Ulimately I hope for an epic 5 game PvZ series in the finals where 2 games have ultras vs. archons and reavers and maybe 1 game with mutas/guardians/devourers vs. carriers/corsairs and 2 games have early game risky strats that (don't) pay off but have intense micro battles.

Clearly, the strengths of Rain are his macro and his micro, but I dont think his decisions making are that poor, like many people said. Agreed that hes got some funky build and any zerg not scouting the whole map with his first lings deserve to lose against him from now on, but it seems that his agro style to macro/expend while pressure give problems to the whole scene (except flash)

Nice wishes, but unfortunately nowadays the game became so fast and dynamic and decided by the smallest errors or windows of opportunity, that even in a long game, trying to go for such compositions will fuck them up, so its impossible to see something like that in a serious match now or in future imo. Perhaps carriers on an island map

I dunno. I do generally like the behavior of Korean culture. But watching TonDan's scenario, just once, from one of the least emotional ex-pros (like Last or Soulkey) would be worth a few thousand star balloons of laughter.

The most dissapointing series in all of the ASL history IMO.
Horang was just waste of time and attention of every single viewer and what he show is clearly he doesnt deserve to be playing on this scene. Not gonna comment his play is good or not but, he have just gave up with super early gg's in both game 2 and game 3, he showed he want not to play in ASL in an insulting way... I feel sorry for his fans.

I had same reaction, its just ugly thing to do what horang2 did on such a stage.

What is uglier, Horang2 gging too early in game 2, or you speaking so horribly about him online?

Horang tried hard to qualify for ASL, to make ro16, to make ro8, so don't act like he was wasting your time - you decided to watch knowing full well that Rain outclassed him. If he felt helpless against Rain then who are you to judge? If you were on stage you would probably shake and shiver and be unable to move your probes to mine.

Saying a ro8 player has no desire/right to play in ASL is such a joke. You don't understand how hard he had to practice (for no pay) to get to where he is. He owes you nothing and you have no right to complain.
Banned for saying "zerg players are by far the biggest whiners in sc2 history" despite the fact that this forum is full of such posts about Terrans. Foreigner Elitists in control!
