I remember when Stork crashed out in a similar group (1 Z, 3 P) in ASL3 Ro24 -- losing to Pusan and another toss, if I recall correctly...

However, while at that time he seemed shaky, ever since being back from the qualifiers he seems to be more self-confident so I hope he won't have a problem this time beating out Guemchi and Horang2.

Edit: Oh, Guemchi was in that group actually in ASL3. Time for revenge, Commander!!!

After a quick glance I find lots of groups hard to predict.

I can imagine more than two players finishing in advancing position in groups A, B, D, E, F.

Group C is the only one where I would wager without hesitation that Best and Mind will go through. (Although I guess Rush will try to take revenge for that hour long Fighting Spirit decider they played with Mind last season.)

I just watched this yesterday, it was very heartwarming to see. Obviously that should help a lot. I don't want to derail the thread though so here's something else:

How's Movie's form? I didn't see his qualifying run but if he's in a not-bad form the group might be hard for JD.

Tiers decided by past ASL results, so Sharp in Tier 1, Action in Tier 4.

I see every Zerg losing their first game in the ro24. And I am not exaggerating. I honestly think the ro24 is going to be a disaster for Zerg. They'll have to play the game of their life to win, and you can't pull off miracle wins but 1% of the time.

This is interesting to check out:

Shine v Light -- I think if someone Shine can figure out a strat that beats Terran. And Light's TvZ is not the one we got to know in the pro days. Even with the map imbalance I'd give Shine 33%.

Effort v Horang2 -- This is hard. Effort has been losing on Sparkle left-right as far as I can see it, especially against P. Still, Effort is Effort and he thrives in chaos, so I would give him at least 15%.

Calm v Best -- Probably this is the 1% match, even though Best's vZ is not as strong just pure skill difference and the amount they've been playing makes me think this is almost impossible for Calm.

Soulkey v Mini -- Mini has been great! With that said on the big stage he never performed like on stream where as SK is quite the opposite. I don't know what percentage I'd give but definitely above 5.

Jaedong v Movie -- I think Jaedong has at least 33% here as well. His perseverance always helped him out in impossible situations and I haven't seen Movie play for at least half a year. He might suck, regardless of what the map is.

So while I agree with your general sentiment, I think giving literally 1% without exaggeration is a tad bit too much.

You are in luck. The final is scheduled for May 20.

I had the extreme luck to be there when the SSL9 finals happened and it was something I'll never forget. If you can, I definitely recommend you go to as many matches as possible! Have fun.

While I feel sad for zergs having to play on Sparkle, I appreciate the organizers giving a chance to an island map. Maybe with time these types of maps can be tweaked to improve the balance. Then, we will have some variety in the game, which is nice. At least for spectators

I would predict the same, with Guemchi in B and Mind in C to have even chances to advance instead of Stork and Rush. However, with Sparkle, I can see Soulkey and Jaedong dropping out. For Soulkey it's ZvP on Sparkle then ZvZ so... For Jaedong it's a bit easier because he will probably face Pusan in the Decider again - or might even make it happen on Sparkle, who knows. Pusan is not that strong.

Sorry if this question sounds dumb, but how does this all work out for the next round? 12 advance here, right? Then the top 8 are seeded from last season? Does that give us 20?

Top4 is seeded which gives us 16. 4 groups with 4 players each.

No, sadly, I don't have any idea and I haven't been following his stream/life before so I don't know what might have happened. I just noticed end of last year that he didn't upload any new content to his YT anymore (https://www.youtube.com/user/JmoviestarTV/videos) and that he also didn't manage to participate in ASL4.

Still, it's of course great to see him qualify and I hope he won't suck. I wish him no bad.

People will try to argue it is different because of new map edits, but Zerg has been only winning 30% of all games.

Zerg is at late game that so weak, special is air units. But first game and mid game, Zerg can use everything to win, this is easier than Terran and Protoss.

My view is Protoss > Terran > Zerg on the Sparkle map. But I believe that 50% Zerg players are still through Ro24.

Zerg hive tech is amazing vs toss air. Have you seen sairs vs devourers? And let's not mention plague.

New sparkle is a good zerg map, only a few days away i am excited for asl

This is what I keep thinking. Except I've watched several massive devourer balls get obliterated by sairs. I keep thinking, "You're supposed to have a few devourers, and back it up with a ton of mutas." But since the top zergs in the world haven't been doing that, I conclude they know something I don't.

Devourers have an absurdly slow attack speed. If you get opponents covered in lots of purple goo, though, mutas just melt whatever it is. I saw JD employ this strat successfully once. It won, but wasn't as effective as I had been thinking. But it looked like he had too many devs and not enough mutas.

He separated the mutas. I suppose this is wise against 20+sairs. Clearly a pain to do.

Zerg players can combat with many colors into a unit the same time: Defiler's red, Devourer's purple and Queen's green. It's really strong but It's so difficult to do.

I don't understand Acid Spores of Devourer. Anyone explains it for me, please.

My strategies for Zerg players who will be against Terran and Protoss on the Sparkle map, at the ASL5

Zerg vs Terran

Because of Air units of Terran are very strong whole game. Zerg should control map and getting win by economic. With Sunken Colony and Spore Colony at first game and then Defiler, Hydralisk, Lurker at mid game. Late game, Zerg is just mass Mutalisk to end game. Of course, Zerg takes win game.

Zerg vs Protoss

Because of Corsair unit of Protoss is the their key. I choose Hydralisks to fight with them. It will look like Zerg vs Terran, Zerg will be win by economic. Zerg control almost the map and defend it with Hydralisks and Defiler. Zerg will difficult to dropping into Protoss' base but It's easier than when Zerg drop others one. Zerg need to mass Devourer and Guardian to take win Protoss players.

See Devourer

The spores increase damage the unit takes, typically from hydras and mutas.

Compare the damage output from a mutalisk after ricochet. 9-3-1, vs 18-12-10 to a maximally soaked unit.

Spores also reveal cloaked units and slightly increase cooldown.

And Devourers make opponents units fire slower.

Cheers bovienchien, ASL5 will be epic.

Sparkle is an island map, right? How have matches been looking on it / how's the racial balance?

Yes, it's an island map. It has had several revisions because the early versions were seen as Zerg graveyards. The current version is more favorable for Zerg because a center island that formerly contained two vespene geysers, which Terran or Protoss always claimed, has been removed. The jury is still out on whether the map is balanced. Recently, on Jaedong's YouTube channel,
+ Show Spoiler +
he beat Rain 2-1 and Shuttle 2-0, with all games on the new version, and looked good doing it.

Personally, I'm cautiously optimistic, although I think it's really inelegant that there's a geyser that literally only Zergs can build on.

OMG Clam! I might be rooting for a zerg player for once. Nice to see Action as well.
And the island map is hype! Although it's a shame for the zergs. Zergs struggled so much on island maps, and sair reaver is pretty op. Is random or race picking allowed these days?

Calm isn't taking ASL very seriously, at least not on his stream. He has grown his stream in the last few months, but every time I check in he's playing random on a UMS map that can't help him prepare. Seems to be having a blast and that's great, but I doubt Calm and those he's constantly playing with will do very well in ASL.

Too bad, I'd like to see him and some of that bunch go far. Also the group he's in.. Best, Mind, Rush.. he's not getting out of that group without preparing.

Why the fuck is ASL 5 in starcraft Remastered? and why would it be in the BW tourneys section if it is?
Need to sticky threads like this in "other games" or make a full remastered tab for the forum. Bw and Remastered are not the same thing.

Happy to announce that Afreeca is allowing me cast the ASL5 again! Unfortunately, FlashFTW will be out of commission for this one due to school and IRL stuff. I'll still be streaming on Afreeca, but I'm continually plying the Afreeca team to expand their streaming, so...maybe next season we'll get it on Twitch.

Either way, I'm super excited!

I'm trying too not get too excited as the combination of my schools internet (I live in school dorms because things are going well for me in my 30's) and Afreeca made it almost unwatchable last time round. But hell I'm going to try and watch.

I hear you, I had to watch the last season on my phone internet in the middle of nowhere. Did you try the VLC streammate workaround? That seems to improve the connection for a lot of people.

Watching in the TL preview instead of on the site itself works well for me too. For whatever reason, embedded videos on TL sift through whatever Afreeca does that's super laggy.

I think that is his strategy. There are two cases: If he will be eliminated, it's fine so He didn't train seriously. If he will advance to Ro16. Yeah, It's exactly he trained seriously and hide it for everyone. Even though any cases will happen, he always is who wins.

Calm's group: Best and Calm will advance.

Because of Rush is so weak, even if He gets advantage in the game, he won't be also know how to finish the game with a win game (1 2 for Rush).

Mind will lose to Rush in the TvT match and then lose in the next game with Best or Calm. It's easy to guess (0 2 for Mind).

Rush weak? Rush is probably on the same level as Mind atm. if not better. Calm looked considerably more shaky than Rush in the qualifiers. IIrc Rush took down Soulkey 2-0 and it was actually quite one-sided...

Rush hasn't desire to win. Let's look at difference from Flash and Rush. Rush is depressed quickly when he is disadvantage and don't know how to win when he has advantage (do you remember to match his TvT with Mind?).

First you say Mind is not a contender for the group as Rush will beat him but now you mention Rush's lacking mental fortitude with an example where he was outplayed by Mind. Why do you think Rush would beat Mind this time around then?

Rush has been training so much TvT games with Flash, Sharp and Mong. Although he was not good at this matchup TvT, but I believe that he will be win Mind.

I believe I'm reading this right, Ro24 and Ro16 is Bo1 double elim groups like Code S?

Given that the maps are published in advance, does this lend itself towards some players developing hyper specific timing strategies?

For instance, Light/Shine already know they have to prepare to play a Protoss on their second map regardless of winning/losing.

Or is the predilection for standard play more "meta" right now?

Thanks from an old SC2 and new-ish BW fan!

Specific builds are highly likely given the unorthodox maps, especially for someone like Shine.

Is there any reason why they're not streaming out to YT live? The Afreeca website is completely unuseable in the UK. No quality options, and it just stutters nonstop, even on my decent internet.

Is there any way to reach out to the ASL organisers to talk to them about this?

Isn't there a youtube stream? I think they had one for Group A. Anyways, did you try running the afreeca stream on VLC? I don't need it where I am right now but back home I had the same problems you have and using VLC helped me a lot. Afaik it works for a lot of other people as well.
