Calm uses early muta and gas advantage along with some nice zergling/muta micro to take the first game from type-b. 1-0 STX.

Hmm, hogil could have taken anything he wanted so it's kind of disappointing he's still only on 3 gas
|
Hogil opens 9 pool into 3-hatch muta but it is defended by kal with no major damage being done. Hogil then adds 6th hatch and turtles on 4 bases with lurkers and lings while teching to hive. He holds off the first major attack Kal makes on his 4th. Kal is now taking the centre expansion on HBR.
|
Hogil successfully defends a storm drop with scourge and then defends a goon/temp attack on his natural while scouting and shutting down Kal's attempt at a third. He's in a pretty good position right now. Kal is now expanding to 6 o clock but Hogil finds it with a zergling. Hogil playing pretty solidly so far.

Blah Hogil was in a good place in the beginning, his mutas killed a decent amount of probes while the mutas survived, and Kal took a long time to transition into making a large ground army after his sair/DT open did nothing... Yet Hogil didn't take any more expansions, tech up, or do anything useful . This game is closer than it had to be.

Wow, Hogil is playing really well here
|
kal's 6 o'clock is down, situation looks pretty dire. 7 o'clock down as well
|
|
wow, talking about blowing an advantage
|
|
Hogil loses his entire army (decent sized hydra/lurk/ling force) on Kal's side of the map and fails to shut down Kal's third. Kal then expands to the bottom left expansion and goes for another attack on Hogil's natural but dark swarm stops it. Hogil snipes the nexus at Kal's fourth with a small group of lings and expands to the top left expansion. Kal drops 4 DTs in Hogil's main and they snipe the spawning pool before Hogil can defend. Hogil starts to apply pressure to Kal's defenses at his third at 6 o clock with defiler/lurker/ling/hydra. Hogil is now at 3 carapace 2 melee attack 3 ranged attack with Kal at +3 weapons. Hogil clears out Kal's third, then moves over to his fourth and clears it out as well. Kal now has no income and launches a last-ditch attack on Hogil's natural and fourth, but Hogil defends after zealots pick off the hatchery at the fourth. Kal's remaining forces die and he ggs.

This entire game was rather bad. Fortunately for Hogil, Kal's PvZ is worse than his ZvP.

I always knew him as having a decent ZvT, but not so much for his ZvP. I'll keep an eye on him

Sick game by Hogil. Kal's first attempt at his third nexus was quite weird. Maybe that was what costed him this game.
|
Hogil is a very strong player this season, his zvt and zvp have been ridiculous him beating kal doesnt suprise me in the least. Too bad his zvz sucks. And hogil doesnt fit in with the cheesy/gimmicky motif of hite.
|
ROFL Kal really thought he could get away with taking the middle expo against a noobzerg. I was confident Hogil could take this match and I'm so happy he did
Funny how Sparkyz zergs ended up. Type-B and Yarnc specialize in ZvT and are abysmally terrible at ZvP but you have Hogil with a great win record vs P but who's awful at ZvZ

Hogil's late game play is just awesome. His winning percentage must increase the longer the game goes, great player to watch.

I have seen at least once before (in a progame) the Toss trying to take the center expo as their 3rd, so I guess there is a good reason for it.

In short, Hwasin moved out with vultures when he had the advantage.
Plus, he later overextended himself once he won map control.

hwasin just cant handle the punishment from leta...wow

A few wraiths aren't useful for anything but vision and killing dropships - but once you mass them...

Jaedong and Effort are probably better than him yeah, but saying they are miles ahead of him is kind of a stretch considering Hogil is winning most of his ZvPs (Raping in the offline tourneys also) and beating several of the top tosses (Free, Stork, Kal). The only thing going against Hogil is that he have barely played any BOx series vs good people and have sort of a small sample size of games but you can see from his ZvPs the last year that he is insanely good at it.
Of those others you suggested, the only one playing at the same level is Calm, as much as I love ZerOs ZvP that man is just way to inconsistent like he dropped 5 ZvPs in a row the last few weeks. Can you REALLY consider him top material when shit like that happens? Sure his a-game is insanely good, but then at other times he looks like a total chump losing in such sad ways. As for Hero, do you really think he is a top ZvP player? I mean sure hes got a pretty decent ZvP, but beside beating Bisu 3 times hes never shown anything beastly ZvP imo.

Nice pick by Sparkyz Coach.
Zero dominated so thoroughly in set 4 that it's natural he would be sent out for Ace match. And Leta is the natural pick for Sparkyz. So STX sent out Kal, since Kal would be heavily favored over Leta. Hence, Sparkyz sent out Yarnc, would counters both Zero and Kal.

Err, with Yarnc slumping I"m not so sure about this decision.
I guess outside of his slump Yarnc is the best Catch All player, being supposedly great vs Zerg and Terran, making him a good counter for the Calm/Hwasin option, but Kal is easily STX's best player for taking down both Leta and Yarnc.
Here's hoping for a crazy match.

I'm not even sure he knew it was a one-base build... it IS Outsider.

I like this one-base 3 gate ranged goon rush. So simple yet to effective.

Good point. He didn't try floating an OL there did he?
|
yay kal saved my fantasy team

Hite T.T Once again so close...
I can't really blame Yarnc for losing that. It's a build that Jaedong could just have easily lost to. Hopefully he'll get his revenge soon. -_-

Think he scouted gate with his OL

Not to both sides I don't think.

well, when one twin is up, the other is down; luxury comeback time anyone?
|
Ya i really like seeing these goon builds.

interesting play by kal... looks like something most zergs would lose to

He saw Kal not putting up anything after the core finishes and waited for his goon to pop, still he just moved away his lord and never tried poking in again trying to see whats up.
Sure the build kinda rapes when the Z don`t scout it and only masses drones, but he really should have made some effort to scout what was up.

Easier said that done. His goon was guarding any possibility of OL scouting. Besides, his gates were built in the corner of his base and his OL would never have made it there in time.

Oh, definitely. Thus his abyssmal ZvP reputation.

Last season Leta was the king of Ace Matches.
TIMES HAVE CHANGED

Leta basically just fizzled out after his TvZ Wraith usage was figured out, that was the main thing that was carrying him.
|
His TvT was arguably the best in the world at the time, too.
His TvP is nowhere near as good but he was capable of pulling out crazy wins, as seen in his sparse games vs the Dragons.
|
Kal fighting! Thank god he finally got a chance in the ace again, I'm not even sure when was he last sent out as ace.

There just wasn't a easy way, he would have to have insane game sense to recognize that Kal wasn't going to tech and go for goon pressure.
And as for floating dual ovies to scout his base... Really now? How standard is that? He didn't have a reason to believe there was anything weird going on.
Face it, it was a really solid build.

Really now? How standard is that? He didn't have a reason to believe there was anything weird going on. Face it, it was a really solid build. I did not suggest floating dual ovies into the base, but he could have used the one ovie he had right outside his ramp that he floated away to at least TRY and scout what was up. Hell if he had moved it up into his main and sacrificed it he would have seen the spinning core, you don`t have to be a rocket scientist to expect goons then. What he opted for was moving away his lord and relying on a single ling for scouting, hell he did not even realize what Kal was doing until Kals army was already outside his own natural which left him with no time getting up sunks\units. Hell even if Kal had did 3gate speed zeals he would probably have raped him also.
And no it was not a SOLID build, it was an all in build that relied on Zerg not scouting it, because if he do its pretty much an auto loss. There is a reason for the saying "Assumptions, the mother of all fuck ups". If you make no effort to find out what someone who is 1baseing is doing, then you can`t complain when they roll you with something unexpected. Now maybe he would not have gained any intel with sacking his overlord, but he would at least have tried to find out what Kal was up to and then his loss would be easier to accept.
|
I meant solid as in, it works when you can anticipate how the zerg will react. Saccing the overlord to scout isn't all that common.
In short, a good play led to a well deserved win.
