*****WARNING SPOILERS BELOW*****

If you want to know the background of the Shinhan Season 2 OSL, read up on the
2006 Shinhan 2 OSL Preview by Manifesto. If you want to be in the know of how this OSL came about, I highly suggest you read it. HonestTea also helps this forum tick because of his awesome updates, schedule posts, and other arousing things he does. Everyone give them a thank you whenever possible.

Do you ever catch yourself saying what's going on? Who's winning? I don't get it. You've looked at Akira's page, but you still go huh? Even though TL.net always has awesome coverage, sometimes I find myself behind and having a tough time trying to understand what's going on in this complicated OSL format. That's why I present to you:

--The Legend Of The Fall--
Ever since 2000 when Garimoto won vs Skelton, there has been a Protoss OSL winner every fall with the exception of 2004 when BoxeR finally staged his comeback after slumping only to lose to his own pupil iloveoov. The legend of the fall rests in the hands of 4 Protoss players, last year's fulfiller of the legend: Anytime, two first time OSLers Bisu and Ever, and the ever present Rock. Last year, Anytime said that Garimto himself actually came up to him and gave him some encouragement.

--The OGN Curse--
There is a supposed curse for the previous OSL winner. They always lose the first game in the next OSL. I think more appropriately though would be that the previous OSL winner performs terribly. Well Casy has already fulfilled that part of the end. Oov did too. So did Anytime.

Note: Both King of Kings were not an OSL, they were tournaments, not starleagues.
Wi 00 King of Kings 1 - (R)Grrrr... > Z(bOy)
Sp 02 King of Kings 2 - (Z)YellOw > (T)Gundam

-The Players-
24 players. 6 seeded from the previous OSL. The remaining 18 all toughed it out from ODT. There is a serious imbalance in the racial distribution just like the last OSL. (Last OSL had a crazy amount of Zergs.) This OSL has a crazy amount of Terrans at 11. Zerg is still crazy at 9. Protoss hanging in there by a finger at 4. Out of those 4 you'll have to make your pick for the Legend of the Fall. I unfortunately picked Rock early on. T_T

-The Maps-
The maps for Shinhan Season 2 OSL are 4 maps. They are Shin Peaks of Baekdu, Arcadia 2, Tau Cross, and Araknoid.
Ongamenet Map Crew decided to drop 3 of last OSL's maps and only kept Peaks of Baekdu. Here are the maps:

--新 백두대간 (Shin Peaks of Baekdu)--
This is the only map from last season and that is a generous statement. This map is HEAVILY modified, to the point where I think it deserves a new name. Like Incheon Salt Fields or some crap like that. Notice that the bases are on elevated land now and that the ramp that leads to the corner of the map has a 40 mineral patch on it. Cheese is still in folks. The map terrain like last season is still hard to maneuver through so there will always be small skirmishes.
[image loading]

--Arcadia 2--
Solid map borrowed from MSL. The changes from the first version are gas expos at 3 and 9 are easier to defend from Tanks while gas naturals for each base have had their wall moved closer to make it harder to defend from Tanks.
[image loading]

--Tau Cross--
Simple 3-player map with no fancy small ramps or widened ramps. Bases are all on level ground. Map control can be important, especially the center.
[image loading]

--Arkanoid--
Very fancily (if that's a word) made. The map concentrates a lot around neutra buildings and control of the map is not as important. It can be treated like a semi-island map until one player breaks out an opening to their entrance.

-The Recaps-
If you're too dang lazy to download all the games and watch them (there are quite a few games at the beginning of the tournament), Team Liquid very kindly posts up News Recaps of each day's games. Please give them a thank you every time they write one up cause they deserve it. They often include pictures in the recaps and I like pictures, especially the ones with captions. Our recappers include: Manifesto7, ManaBlue, Carnac, ToKoreaWithLove, and maybe the occasional Hot_Bid though I think he busies himself with the ever hilarious LiquiScoop.

-Results and Standings of the Group of 24-
There have been some rule changes to this tournament concering the round of 16 but the group of 24 play has pretty much stayed the same. 6 seeded players from the last OSL each pick a player, each of those players pick another player, and each of those players also pick another. The result is 6 groups of 4 players for a whopping total of 24 players competing to get out of the group stages.

The groups are played in a round robin style, meaning everybody plays everybody once. (The MSL is slightly more efficient, but you might miss a matchup you want to see if one player wins and another loses.) The first two players automatically get into the 16-player tournament, but those with a perfect 3-0 record get to pick who is in which bracket.

Players who get third in their group get sent into a wildcard stage (introduced in Shinhan Season 1). And... players who get fourth get sent to the ODT and some time to reflect on why they got last in their group stage.

Important note concerning 3-way tiebreakers: There is no posssible way to get a 4-way tie in round robin play, but there are 3-way ties. The tiebreaker would be either for a 1-2-3 tie or a 2-3-4 tie. Either way they are broken the same way. The 3 players would have to play a round robin (everybody plays everybody once). The player with 2-0 gets the top spot, 1-1 gets the second, and 0-2 gets the last spot. What if they all get 1-1? Then they repeat the tiebreaker, though Liquibet would only cover the first tiebreaker, because there's no way that they could predict a tiebreaker to be repeated.

Important note concerning 2-way tiebreakers: Our beloved Live2Win just informed us of a new OSL rule concerning 2-way ties in 24 group play. If there is a 2-way tie for first, they will do what they have done in the past: take the game played between the two players as the tiebreaker. But for a 3rd place tie, since a wildcard or ODT is at stake, they will ignore the game played before and the two players will have to play a sudden death 1v1. This should help those got 1-2 records but have no hand in whether they get 3rd or 4th (cough cough YellOw).

IMHO: I think OGN is making this too complicated, they should adopt the more efficient MSL format of game 1, game 2, loser's, winner's, and then tiebreak. But methinks that OGN likes having more games played so that their game total will be higher.

--Group A-- (#1 Casy -> Anytime -> Midas -> July)
1. Midas 3-0 -> advances to tournament as voter
2. Anytime 2-1 -> advances to tournament
3. July 1-2 -> advances to wildcards
4. Casy 0-3 -> ODT, the curse continues!

A Game 1: Anytime > Casy @ Arcadia 2
A Game 2: Midas > July @ Arkanoid
A Game 3: Midas > Casy @ Tau Cross
A Game 4: Anytime > July @ Tau Cross
A Game 5: July > Casy @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
A Game 6: Midas > Anytime @ Shin Peaks of Beakdu

Midas exits the group with a perfect record and gets to be one of the player who gets to choose the seating for the tournament. Anytime will merely be guaranteed a spot but his opponent is unknown until the 3-0 players sort it out. July gets to go to wildcard where he has a 2/3 chance of getting out. Casy was cursed so he got send to ODT before anyone knew it.

--Group B-- (#2 ChOJJa -> JiHyun -> Bisu -> FireBatHero)
1. Bisu 3-0 -> advances to tournament as a voter
T2. FireBatHero 1-2 -> Tiebreaker
T2. JiHyun 1-2 -> Tiebreaker
T2. ChOJJa 1-2 -> Tiebreaker

B Game 1: Bisu > FireBatHero @ Arkanoid
B Game 2: JiHyun > ChOJJa @ Tau Cross
B Game 3: FireBatHero > JiHyun @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
B Game 4: Bisu > ChOJJa @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
B Game 5: Bisu > JiHyun @ Arcadia 2
B Game 6: ChOJJa > FireBatHero @ Arcadia 2

Bisu gets a 3-0 record and gets a hand in choosing the 16-player bracket. ChOJJa won his last game to force a 2-3-4 tie. FireBatHero, JiHyun, and ChOJJa will have to play a tiebreaker. Only the loser will get sent to ODT.

--B Tiebreaker--
FireBatHero -> advances to tournament
JiHyun -> advances to wildcards
ChOJJa -> ODT

B Tiebreaker Game 1: FireBatHero > JiHyun @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
B Tiebreaker Game 2: JiHyun > ChOJJa @ Arcadia 2
B Tiebreaker Game 3: FireBatHero > ChOJJa @ Tau Cross

ChOJJa has really played disappointingly as of late. He may not have taken his group seriously because of their lack of OSL experience (all of them were first timers) but going from 2nd in Shinhan 1 to not even out of group play is a real letdown. Stupid KTFers and their stupid slumps. So FBH advances to the tourney and JiHyun will play in the wildcard group A.

--Group C-- (#3 YellOw -> Ever -> Shine -> GoodFrienD)
1 . Shine 2-1 -> advances to tournament
2. GoodFrienD 2-1 -> advances to tournament
T3. TT 1-2 -> sudden death for wildcard
T3. YellOw 1-2 -> sudden death for wildcard

C Game 1: TT > YellOw @ Tau Cross
C Game 2: Shine > GoodFrienD @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
C Game 3: YellOw > Shine @ Arcadia 2
C Game 4: GoodFrienD > TT @ Arcadia 2
C Game 5: GoodFrienD > YellOw @ Arkanoid
C Game 6: Shine > TT @ Arkanoid

Because Shine won C Game 2 against GF, Shine is awarded first from the group, though I'm not too sure yet if getting first or second from your group without a 3-0 record will do you much good. According to the new OSL rule concerning 3-4 tiebreakers, YellOw and Shine will have to play a sudden death match.

--C Sudden Death--
TT -> advances to wildcards
YellOw -> ODT DDD=

Sudden Death: TT > YellOw @ Arcadia 2

I swear OSL gave a freebie to YellOw. A choke artist vs YellOw on an imba Z map. Stupid KTFers and their stupid slumps.

--Group D-- (#4 JJu -> Rock -> Canata -> Sea)
1. Sea 3-0 -> advances to tournament as a voter
2. JJu 2-1 -> advances to tournament
3. Rock 1-2 -> advances to wildcards
4. Canata 0-3 -> ODT

D Game 1: Sea > Canata @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
D Game 2: JJu > Rock @ Arcadia 2
D Game 3: Sea > Rock @ Arkanoid
D Game 4: JJu > Canata @ Arkanoid
D Game 5: Rock > Canata @ Tau Cross
D Game 6: Sea > JJu @ Tau Cross

Simple group. Sea plays perfectly to get a voter spot in the tournament. JJu plays a 2-1 record and just advances. Rock gets a wildcard seat. Canata plays terribly and get sent to ODT.

--Group E-- (#5 ZergMaN -> Jy -> NaDa -> Light)
1. NaDa 3-0 -> advances to tournament as voter
2. ZergMan 2-1 -> advances to tournament
3. Jy 1-2 -> advances to wildcards
4. Light 0-3 -> ODT

E Game 1: ZergMaN > Jy @ Arcadia 2
E Game 2: NaDa > Light @ Arcadia 2
E Game 3: NaDa > ZergMaN @ Arkanoid
E Game 4: Jy > Light @ Arkanoid
E Game 5: ZergMaN Light @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
E Game 6: NaDa > Jy @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu

Another simple group. NaDa plays perfectly and gets the voter spot. ZergMaN plays second best and will advance to the tournament. Jy will have to play in the wildcard matches and Light will get sent to ODT and some time to reflect.

--Group F-- (#6 IriS -> Cloud -> GoRush -> GGPlay)
1. GGPlay 2-1 -> advances to tournament
2. GoRush 2-1 -> advances to tournament
T3. Cloud 1-2 -> sudden death for wildcard
T3. IriS 1-2 -> sudden death for wildcard

F Game 1: GGPlay > GoRush @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
F Game 2: IriS > Cloud @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
F Game 3: Cloud > GGPlay @ Tau Cross
F Game 4: GoRush > IriS @ Tau Cross
F Game 5: GoRush > Cloud @ Arcadia 2
F Game 6: GGPlay > IriS @ Arcadia 2

I think GGPlay surprised us all by getting first in the group. GoRush lost the match between them so he gets second. IriS and Cloud will be forced to play a sudden death for the wildcard according to the new OSL rules.

--F Sudden Death--
IriS -> advances to wildcards
Cloud -> ODT

Sudden Death: IriS > Cloud @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu

Despite starting behind in the opening, IriS fought back to overtake Cloud who's TvT has once again been thrashed. I guess it isn't fair cause IriS has XellOs on his team. I s2 XellOs.

-Wildcard Results and Standings-
There have been some changes to the Wildcard Round which Live2Win kindly let us know. The six players will be separated into two groups of three and will play a round robin. Only the top two (meaning records of 2-0 and 1-1) will get to advance to the remaining 4 spots in the 16-player tournament.

--Wildcard Group A--
July 2-0 -> advances to tournament
TT 1-1 -> advances to tournament
JiHyun 0-2 -> ODT

Wildcard A Game 1: July > JiHyun @ Tau Cross
Wildcard A Game 2: July > TT @ Arkanoid
Wildcard A Game 3: TT > JiHyun @ Arcadia 2

July was in last year's wilcard group but this time he comes out of it alive with two excellent performances. Afroman (TT) had a huge hour long battle against JiHyun for the last spot.

--Wildcard Group B--
IriS 2-0 -> advances to tournament
Rock 1-1 -> advances to tournament
Jy 0-2 -> ODT

Wildcard B Game 1: Rock > Jy @ Arcadia 2
Wildcard B Game 2: IriS > Rock @ Tau Cross
Wildcard B Game 3: IriS > Jy @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu

IriS once again comes out of the Wildcards alive just like last season. Rock performs decently and Jy unfortunately will have to go to ODT. I was a Jy fan becaue of his performance through ODT, just stomping over everyone. Perhaps he was intimidated in his first OSL experience, hopefully he'll be back for many more.

-16-player Tournament Results and Standings-
There have also been some rule changes to this Tournament. Biggest is regarding the business of seeding the brackets. They are no longer preset seeds such as C2 or W4 or F1. Players with the best records gets to choose who plays who and etc. Those who get to choose do not get to play each other. This is to help players who performed best in the group stages to advance farther then those who didn't. The Loser's Final will not be a best of five anymore but be a bo3. There were other logistical changes but nothing to fret about.

--Tournament Bracket Selection--
This is to be held immediately after the Wildcards are finished. The players with the 3-0 records get to choose their opponents and how the bracket is fashioned. The order they get to choose in is random.

Midas -> JJu
Bisu -> GoodFrienD
Sea -> GoRush
NaDa -> TT
Shine -> Rock
GGPlay -> Anytime
ZergMaN -> July
FireBatHero -> IriS

--The SuperJongMan Bracket--
It's named after SJM because he wouldn't let me close the last Results and Standings page until I finished filling in the bracket. This is the same bracket picture from the first season, I just made some changes. ;D. Enjoy.

[image loading]

--Sweet 16--
The players are composed of 12 players who finished top two in their respective groups and 4 players who got top two in their wildcard groups. As aforementioned, players with perfect 3-0 records from 24 group play will get to vote and choose the seeding in the brackets. I called them "voters" but I don't know what else to call them. The Sweet 16 will be a best of three for 8 matches. Losers of their respective Sweet 16 matches get a seat in the ODT and some time to practice for next season's OSL.

Elite 8 Match A (NaDa vs ZergMaN)

Anytime 2-1 -> Final 4
GoRush 1-2 -> 5th/6th Seed Playoff

Elite 8 C Game 1: Anytime > GoRush @ Arcadia 2
Elite 8 C Game 2: GoRush > Anytime @ Tau Cross
Elite 8 C Game 3: Anytime > GoRush @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu

Elite 8 Match D (IriS vs Midas)

Midas 2-1 -> Final 4

Elite 8 D Game 1: IriS > Midas @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
Elite 8 D Game 2: Midas > IriS @ Arkanoid
Elite 8 D Game 3: Midas > IriS @ Arcadia 2

--Final 4--
The Final 4 matches will be a best of five. This is the penultimate step to playing in the OSL Final. Winner's of their respective Final 4 will get to play in the Final. Loser's will have to player a best of 3 Loser's Final for the 3rd and 4th seeds in the next OSL.

Final 4 Match A (NaDa vs GoodFrienD
NaDa 3-0 -> advances to Finals
GoodFrienD 0-3 -> Loser's Final

Final 4 A Game 1: Nada > Goodfriend @ Arkanoid
Final 4 A Game 2: Nada > Goodfriend @ New Peaks of Baekdu
Final 4 A Game 3: Nada > Goodfriend @ Tau Cross

Final 4 Match B (Anytime vs Midas)
Anytime 3-2 -> advances to Finals

Final 4 B Game 4: Anytime > Midas @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
Final 4 B Game 5: Anytime > Midas @ Arcadia 2

--3rd/4th Final-- (GoodFrienD vs Midas)
The Loser's Final. They came so close but are so far away from that elusive OSL title. This was changed to a best of three since the last season's OSL.

GoodFrienD 1-2 -> Seed #4 in Shinhan 3 OSL
Midas 2-1 -> Seed #3 in Shinhan 3 OSL

3rd/4th Final Game 1: GoodFrienD > Midas @ Tau Cross
3rd/4th Final Game 2: Midas > GoodFrienD @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
3rd/4th Final Game 3: Midas > GoodFrienD @ Arcadia 2

--5th/6th Seed Playoff--
The people here are those who failed to advance from the Elite 8 round. The top two players here will get a 5th and 6th seed respectively. The loser's will unfortunately have come one step too short and will have to duke it out at ODT for a chance at next season's OSL title. The format of this is very efficient. Those who follow MSL will recognize that it's the exact same format of Game 1, Game 2, Losers, Winners, Tiebreaks

ZergMaN 2-1 -> Seed #6 in Shinhan 3 OSL
Rock 0-2 -> ODT
GoRush 2-0 -> Seed #5 in Shinhan 3 OSL
IriS 1-2 -> ODT

5th-6th Playoff Game 1: ZergMaN > Rock @ Arkanoid
5th-6th Playoff Game 2: GoRush > IriS @ Arkanoid
5th-6th Playoff Winners: GoRush > ZergMaN @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
5th-6th Playoff Losers: IriS > Rock @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
5th-6th Playoff Tiebreak: ZergMaN > IriS @ Arcadia 2

*****Grand Final***** (NaDa vs Anytime)
The winners of the Final 4 play here for it all. The coveted OSL title. If you win 3 OSLs, OGN will kindly give you the OSL trophy as well as the Golden Mouse trophy. With the OSL victory comes much prestige for the OSL has a far richer history than the MSL does. There's also the champion's curse that follows but it's more worth it if you win.

NaDa 3-2 -> IS YOUR GRAND CHAMPION, HE WINS THE GOLDEN MOUSE!
Anytime 2-3 -> so close but settles for 2nd place.

Grand Final Game 1: Anytime > NaDa @ Tau Cross
Grand Final Game 2: NaDa > Anytime @ Shin Peaks of Baekdu
Grand Final Game 3: NaDa > Anytime @ Arkanoid
Grand Final Game 4: Anytime > NaDa @ Arcadia 2
Grand Final Game 5: NaDa > Anytime @ Tau Cross

KT-KTF wasn't a Starleague so it's not an OSL. I think it was called a Premier or Open. KT-KTF Premier, yeah that sounds about right.

And no, I don't think they're gonna do it again, I believe they only did it twice.

it was a Premiere League.

I'd have to dig up more information on Naver or others since it was before I joined the progaming scene.

Okay, I'll try to do some research tomorrow and do one for Pringles 2.

Paleman brings up an excellent point. PLZPLZPLZ point out any mistakes/improvements that can be made. Stuff you would like added or taken out. This isn't for me but for TL.net's aid in following a complicated Starleague.

I know it wasnt a starleague I thought it was a once a year tourney done in between OSL/MSLs and with a bigger prize pool. I'm wondering why it was stopped

OSL and MSL have now completly changed in what depends on race balance.

MSL started absolutly balanced with 5P/5T/6Z and is now in disfavor of T's at 3P/1T/4Z.
OSL started in favor of T's and Z's with 4P/11T/9Z and is now quite balanced at 4P/7T/5Z.

I scanned this thread but didnt see... This weeks Liquibet indicates that OGN is for the round of 16 going back to their weirdo BO3 spread out over 3 days system that used for a while. Is that right? It wont be 2 match ups played per day like last season? TT I enjoyed that way, I dont like having to wait a week to see the culmination of a couple BO3's ;;

You were right, it is spread over 3 days. I mentioned that as "logistical changes".

Oh snap, this OSL has the potential to produce some of the best sets that these past 2 seasons has been graced with. I really want NaDa and Anytime to make it, but any of those 4 in the top 2 would be awesome.

The top 4 for this OSL is a very nice line up. A truly top-4 worthy line up unlike the pos MSL that ruined itself. Gaaaa .... BTW nice Brackets

Yep. Also, unless I'm mistaken this is the 4th OSL final where each finalist is a former OSL champion.

This has been such a beautiful OSL, particularly because I got the 8 points that I wanted on Liquibet, and NaDa has finally overcome his depression and triumphed with an OSL victory.

Stay tuned because I will update the bracket soon.
