Ramen, Udon and good stuff part 1/?

Hey guys, SwEEt[TearS] here for the first of many food review blogs. Today I’ll be trying out Ippeichan Yakisoba Japanese style noodles, manufactured by Myojo.

Disclaimers:
I have never eaten real yakisoba, let alone instant yakisoba. My review will purely be based on taste and nutritive value, not as a comparison with the real stuff.

This stuff is potentially bad for you, depending on how often you eat it. A quick glance at the nutrition facts shows that this meal alone represents 45% of your fat daily intake, 71% of your sodium daily intake and 26% of your sugar daily intake. This could get problematic if your diet consists mainly of instant ramen (which is the ultimate goal of my blog), especially the sodium part. However, I suppose once a month or so wouldn’t be that bad. Don’t push it too far though.

On to the good stuff!

The package itself is pretty nice. Much like cup ramen, you can cook everything in it and then eat it on the spot. It’s made of Styrofoam so the heat is evenly spread and keeps the warmth for a while.

The instructions (they’re so cute haha) seem complicated but they really aren’t. Everything is made pretty obvious and simple so that you don’t need to play around, even if there are multiple steps.

Inside the container you’ll find Worcester sauce, Mustard Mayonnaise, Spices and dried cabbage.

Open the dry vegetables pack and put it in the container like so.

Now fill with boiling up to where indicated and close the container tightly. Instructions tell you to leave it for 3 minutes, which I found was perfect despite being scared of having it overcooked with the pic taking and stuff.

Carefully pull the strainer tab and slowly drain the water out. You’ll probably lose small bits of ramen that broke and the smaller pieces of cabbage but take your time, really.

You can already smell the incredible odor of noodles and cabbage without the tab open, but straining it really lets out that oomph of awesomeness that makes you want to eat it asap.

Now the most important step: take as much time needed to mix all the ingredients well. The mustard mayonnaise really complements the Worcester sauce, but to complement it truly it needs to be mixed perfectly or else you’ll have some mustard mayonnaise bites that will overwhelm the rest of the dish. Also, the shredded nori doesn’t seem to stick all that much at first but once the noodles are well coated with Worcester sauce it isn’t as bad. You’ll probably have some left over at the bottom of the container though.

I could have stopped there but I decided to eat it in a bowl because I just can’t bring myself to eat in those containers (that’s my French side taking over t_t).

Now on to the final review:

Texture: Great texture, the sauce coats the noodles perfectly and there is no leftover sauce at the bottom. The instructions for cooking are spot on, the noodles remain chewy and tender at the same time. 9/10

Taste: Awesome taste. The mustard mayonnaise really kicks Worcester sauce to another level and the dried cabbage is a nice addition to the mix. The “spices” pack is actually shredded nori supposedly mixed with dried Worcester sauce, but oddly enough you couldn’t taste it at all despite the size of it. A bit too much on the sweet side for me, but once in a while I like it that way. 8.5/10

Nutritive value: This is where it goes downhill. Overall it is an awesome tasting dish and putting nutritive values aside I’d probably eat it once a week or so. But the fat alone makes this very bad, not to mention the salt (it doesn’t even taste salty wtf) and carbs. This isn’t the kind of meal you should eat twice a day. 4/10

Overall score: 7/10. I surely recommend it to everybody, but seriously it’s the kind of thing that you eat with some guilt (at least for me) knowing you could eat a lot more if you had taken other choices. Once in a while though, no harm done. Will probably pick one up next time I shop because I go like every 2-3 months.

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed!
PS: I’ll be testing to see if I can actually record the review and put it in youtube, but the quality isn’t that great so far~~

Yep~ I got this @ Kim Phat which is like 15 minutes away from my place. After reading quite a few threads I found out that place specializes more in Chinese/Vietnamese stuff whereas some other places in Montreal focus more on Korean/Japanese, so I might go and try to find new stuff

I hear Aliments Santé T & S Health Food @ 5151 Park Ave. Mtl has the best tofu around

Jang To Marche Oriental @ 2109 St. Catherine West has kimchi, depending on the season it'll be too young/not spicy enough so it's really up to you to go and try

Miyamoto Provisions @ 382 avenue Victoria, Westmount specializes in japanese stuff and sushi

Marché d'Alimentation Coreen @ 6151 rue Sherbrooke Ouest supposedly owns (great bulgogi meat and kimchi apparently) and I think next time I go to mtl I'll stop by

marché Hawai @ 1999 Marcel Laurin, Saint-Laurent (in Les Galeries Saint-Laurent, corner Poirier) got a lot of praise last year but I haven't had feedback in a while so idk

Kim Phat @ 3733 rue Jarry Est supposedly is better than the one in Brossard, and compares to Marché Orientale St-Denis @ 7101 rue Saint-Denis (which has some killer char siu)
