So last night I was about to shut down my other laptop when a message saying "System Security 2009 successfully installed". Now, I don't have any anti-virus installed on that laptop because it slows it down, so I just assumed that my technologically-inept mom pressed some random button to install something so I was like "w/e" and went to bed.

When I woke up to watch the Avalon MSL vods this morning, this System Security shit just popped up and did this "scan" and told me I had 36 virus. I knew something was not right and I looked it up on this laptop that I'm typing from and found out that it was a piece of crap and that I needed to delete it right away.

Here's where I ran into a HUGE problem. I tried to stop System Security from running by bring up task manager, but it won't even let me bring up task manager. It also prevented me from running "Add/Remove Programs". I could try to find the files and delete them manually, but my dad said that I could potentially harm the system by doing that.

Do you guys have any advice on what I should do? If nothing works, then I'm just going to reformat it.

Thanks for your time!

the world's a playground. you know that when you're a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.

Add/Remove programs only contains programs that register themselves anyways, obviously malware wouldn't do this. Your best bet would be to go get some real anti-virus programs on another family member or friend's computers and install them via cd (AVG, Spybot, etc). System Security 2009 is a fairly wellknown malware so they should be able to take care of it (hopefully)

EDIT: Oh, and deleting files manually won't do any damage, unless you don't know what you're doing and accidently delete important system files, which I suppose a lot of people do.

I forgot to mention, but I also can't access any websites regarding how to delete this on the infected laptop.

I've already looked it up and tried everything except the manual deletion.

post on a forum dedicated to helping people solve problems?
i always feel bad when i do it because the mods there know their stuff and most of the people that go there just go once and leave forever and it's sort of like leeching, but it's a free service.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum22.html maybe? i'm sure there are a lot of them, just google

EDIT: oops just read your last post. i suppose you could post it on another computer and transfer the logs?

I don't have this, but I wouldn't be able to run it anyways. System Security 09 prevents me from running .exe files.

ahh If you don't want to go through the long and painful process of manually deleting all the registry files and random executable files your best bet is to simply system restore. As it seems like the rogue software was downloaded only recently the system restore should set your back functioning back to normal!

edit:

This was just taken from a quick search of manually deleting the spyware. It'll be a bit difficult to do if you're not already computer savvy and know the ins and outs of your computer.

Download malwarebyte's anti-malware from http://www.malwarebytes.org/

You probably won't be able to install it unless you run it in safe mode, so do that. It should automatically remove the fake anti-spyware for you.

Try using the online free virus // adware virus removal by trend micro.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Maybe this can help some. Also deleting files can only do damage to your operation system if it's inside the System or System 32 file system mostly. Also Windows folder...depending all on OS your running also. Anything in program files or etc...you can delete it might only cause the program of that folder to stop working but not biggie you can go download it again or install it.

If this does not work for you let me know. I can tell you or send you 2 of the best free programs i use at my business to remove things like this.

CCleaner doesn't remove these kind of programs. It only good for like cleaning out Temp folder, Cookies, and etc.. mostly junk not programs attacking or spyware related.

Also System restore usually does not work vs programs like this most the time. People who like to create this stupid software to try and get money aim for you to not be able to simply remove the software. Disable most common function that a normal user or non-experience IT person would try to use.

I wouldn't have been able to do this.

If I ran in safe mode with networking, then the System Security automatically pops up as soon as I log in. x.x
Thanks a lot everyone for your input, it will probably help prevent something like this from happening again.

I reformatted, the only important things that I lost were a bunch of notes from the past school year, my replays, and my pictures x.x

If you have a flash drive, you could download the installer on the flash drive from another computer, then it would've worked. Well since you formatted now, it doesn't matter I guess
