What happened last night was just like any other day - get stoned, watch a movie, hang out and go home to play SC. It was around 10:30 PM and it was time for us to head home. But my two friends masami.sc and stks7rafe (they browse TL too) wanted to smoke a joint before heading home. With us were two other friends, C and M. These two don't smoke weed and we tried to convince them but they just won't do it because it creates artificial happiness according to their beliefs. I also think that they fell in love with each other because they are together all of the time. No joke.
Back to the story: since we want to smoke weed, we get in the car and head to a convenience store to buy rolling paper, while M goes outside and buys a lottery ticket because that dumbfuck thinks he'll get lucky. We all get back into the car and drive for like two minutes before heading into a quiet street. While stk is rolling, we tell the C and M to get out of the car near the end of the road. They agreed to it since they hate the smell of pot. While we made a left, I noticed a police car(!!!), so I told my friends and just thought he was wandering around. Boy, were we wrong :/
I decided not to smoke the joint and stay in the car, although I was still somewhat high from a huge blunt we smoked earlier that day.
Once we were done, we headed back to pick up C and M, but the police car was still there. "Oh fuck" was what first came to my head. We slowly approach the cop, who had a flashlight and told masami to get out of the car. He starts questioning him, and asked him if he had anything illegal, etc etc.
He takes all five of our driver's license, asks us if we had anything, and brings another police car over. That one officer checks our car while the other dude just talks with us.
At this point, I am fucking freaking out. I wonder to myself what my parents are going to do. masami is whispering to himself "I'm so fucked my mom's going to fucking kill me oh my fucking god" The cop who's with us asks us what college we go to, what we study, how old we are, etc.
Then the other cop finds our rolling paper but no weed. He knows we smoked pot because the car smells like pot. But he had no evidence of possession since stks7rafe acted quick+smart and hid the weed on his shoe, which luckily, he did not check.
Cop: So you were smoking pot tonight. Let's just leave this between me and you guys. Where did you get the weed?
stks7rafe: From *name*
The cop writes it down. Asks us more random ass questions like "do you guys do house parties? don't do it" and stuff like
He then says, "You know this shit's going to be legalized in a year, so it probably won't even matter. Don't do this again. You guys got your first strike. There won't be any second chances."
He then told C and M to drive us home since we were high. And that was it.
LUCKY ME!!
Never smoke when it's late at night, especially in a car. ;p

And you got some really nice police officers. Some try to abuse the shit out of you when they know you have it but can't arrest you.

Sounds like a episode of COPS. Honestly smoking cannabis and then driving around suspiciously at night in a quiet street with a bunch of people.

just a question, in the states whats the maxium punishment you can get for possession of weed. i mean maxium. the minimum would probably be a lecture, but can u actually get a jail sentence?

it's going to be, or already is legal in 11 or 13 us states. legal in terms of it being prescribed by a doctor, or something.
if you want more info, google it since i'm just going off the top of my head from what i may or may not remember

I was so high and the cops kept asking me all these questions I just could not comprehend... so I just kept staring at the ground and the cop's shoes. I can't believe we got off so easy... It's probably because he didn't find anything... =]

and what state you're in
possession of small amounts will get you, at most, a $100 fine in my state but it could get you up to a year in prison in Florida for example

Why did the cop search you guys? When you step out of the car, lock the doors, tell the cop you do not consent to any searches. The cops job is never to 'help you', despite what they tell you. Their favorite lines are like "You can either make this easy on yourself and let me help you (i.e. search you), or you will make this harder for everyone." Never believe that, they're just trying to get you to forfeit your rights. It's the first thing they teach rookie cops. You do not need to say anything if they ask you if you have been smoking (never incriminate yourself, 5th amendment), you do not need to consent to any searches, and you can always ask the officer what you are being detained for, and if they don't have a straight answer, you can go.
Not that it would really help in your situation, since the cop smelled pot and could use that as reasonable cause (at least in California), but nevertheless, do know your rights.

haha, I had a similar experience 
I got pulled over at like 4am after driving around for the past few hours smoking a blunt with a friend since apparently "my tires were doing a little spinning around that last turn" (LOL wtf? obviously some bullshit reason to pull me over). Anyway, the cop looks into the car, asks some questions, then spots like a microscopic speck on my friend's shirt (apparently he is a sloppy blunt roller lol) and tells us to get out of the car. My friend throws out some random bullshit story about how we smoked hours ago at some house or something in the next town, and then the cops ask to search the car. I tell them sure since we already ditched everything out the window earlier. They don't find anything, tell us to get back into the car, and then say "eh don't do it again, ok you can leave." I was like LOL WAT? Then I drove home and played some starcraft, it was especially fun because I was blazed out of my fucking mind haha.
