Start off with a poll:
In Death Note, Light's position and actions to rid the world of criminals was justified.

Poll: Kira's actions were justified
(Vote): Yes
(Vote): No

People are too lenient on criminals in modern society. Say a suspect is proven beyond reasonable doubt to be responsible for a series of serious serial murders. Courts would go through all the trouble to confirm his guilt, and in most developed nations, would simply throw him behind bars for a long time. The sentence may not even be the rest of his life, if granted a chance for parole after a certain number of years. What is the point of keeping this human waste alive? The cost to construct and maintain prisons, hire jail guards, the extensive legal processes, and feeding them food all come from public funds. What kind of return are they providing to taxpayers by getting a free ride in prison, bound to stay there for the rest of their life? There is no future in their lives should they be released later anyways. Does anyone truly expect them to rejoin normal society with success? The vast majority are hopeless.

After a person commits a serious crime, why should society even bother to give them a chance? There are many innocents out there whose lives are affected by the selfishness and malicious intent of these criminals. Indeed, some may claim that these people are the vulnerable ones in society and deserve additional support. Why treat the vulnerable so nice when their primary role is to make the lives of others miserable? People like to preach forgiveness and give second chances. The world treats lives much too valuably - we can easily live without these human scum who commit serious crimes. They've had their chance, they were foolish enough to make the wrong decision themselves, and its time to punish them. The easiest way is to eliminate their existence.

The fully expected argument is that there are certain extenuating cases in which circumstances were largely unfair and the suspect had no real choice in the matter. There will definitely be leeway in treating such cases, but I am talking more about those criminals that show little remorse, and have low hopes of being a productive member of society. The problem is that there may not be an objective way to establish this classification.

Ultimately it comes down to the good judgement of certain people. We require the right persons who can show good intuition and reliability that good people are not unjustly penalized.

In Death Note, Light's actions had a lasting impact on the world he was living in. Violent crimes were greatly reduced when potential perpetrators would be more likely to hesitate before committing their offences, knowing an unforgiving god had the power to kill them immediately. Isn't the whole purpose of law enforcement and imprisonment a way to deter criminals and keep them away from the generally good public? Then what is wrong with Light's methods. I think I would live in a world that accepted Kira's methodologies. Espcially since the practitioner in particular was such a qualified genius, that others would be unlikely to handle the burden he was tasked with. If only all violent criminals were so easily struck down by admin's wrath.

Kira made the society run off fear. I think light took it to far and power consumed him in the end. I am a fan in the manga more than the show.

Everyone should atleast give this manga a try.

[edit]
I voted yes by the way.

More death note topics.....Great

Ok...Didn't Light go a bit far....I mean, he only killed criminals at first, but soon his murders got out of hand. Plus some of those prisoners could have been proven to be innocent. As somebody who is a strong advocate for human rights, I cannot agree with Light's methods. Plus he was an egoistical dick who wanted to become a god at the expense of others (poor Misa giving up half her life span to some douche when she is too dumb to understand that he is just using her.

Kira was a badass while he did it so it's ok.

Plus it was a good anime, so that makes it ok too.

In my opinion, for someone to be allowed to use a power such as the death note, they would need to fulfill two requirements. One is that they must be completely fair and unbiased. Two is that they must be all-knowing, because judging people based on news reports and partial evidence is bullshit. Light does not fulfill either of these by a long shot. Also, the fact that he enjoys doing it is a problem.

You think capital punishment is juste, but you don't even bother to go through all the trouble to prove it?
either suspect is proven guilty beyond doubt, in which case the court will judge him guilty, or he's not. That's when the investigations goes on.
You know death penalty is final. Nothing of fuck lol he really wasn't at the house at the night of the murder, nevermind he is dead allready.

This simply won't work. In perfect world: ok, in the real world fucking NO!!!!!

Why death note? It's pretty clear by the second half of the series that a lot of his killings were unjustified and he had lost sight of cleansing the world. Dexter would be more appropriate for this type of discussion imo.

This show sucked. Get over it. Seriously, of all the series to be discussing, you choose Death Note?

~sorry, but my auto-anti-DN bias kicked in and i stand by it.

Lol i agree, you need to think of other things besides worrying about philosophical/moral things that you could argue about and it wouldn't make a dam difference to most people anyways. Besides =.= your physical life isn't much affected by whatever it is and if you really want to debate about something like this go to a church(sarcasm intended-they'll justify things based on GOD!!! zomg shiet lol) or something, they'll give you the devout zealous seriousness you share with them.

Divine Justice also feels cliched somehow, o well.

You can't really blame a person morally for something they did that they wanted to do, it's just that nobody else in the world agrees with you; totally outnumbering you = government/jail/trial/etc. = you cant do anything about it = your fucked

The purpose of the penal system is to REHABILITATE the criminals so that when they DO come out hopefully they will of better use to society. You say "The vast majority are hopeless" but you have no facts to back that statement up. Even if it was true that the majority who come out will fall back into criminal ways I think that is more telling of how bad the penal system is than the wickedness of humans. Everyone deserves a second chance to redeem themselves. If you're going to argue what about serial killers and child rapist, their sentences will hopefully fit the crime. If they get off light, that is a problem with the judicial system, not the way we handle punishment.

LoL, I though this blog was about a person that hates someone so much that one day he was reading the news and found that this someone was killed in a railway incident.
I don't think I've ever wished my opponent good luck prior to a game. When I play, I play to win. I hope every opponent I ever have is cursed with fucking terrible luck. I hope they're stuck playing underneath a stepladder with a black cat in attendance a

If your reason to kill criminals is to save money, then you are mistaken as the court fees/etc. to convict someone to the death penalty are more than just giving them life in jail.

^^^ false

Ah nevermind decided to check that fact before repeating it, it appears to be a myth meme http://www.prodeathpenalty.com/DP.html#D.Cost
