A few years ago my mom bought an exercise bike which she decided she doesn't like and it is sitting in my basement.

http://www.amazon.com/Edge-Magnetic-Recumbent-Exercise-Bike/dp/B000JG9SY4

That following winter I set it up in front of a small tv/vcr combo unit and rewatched Cowboy Bebop while I cycled (for some exercise). It worked out nicely because on several settings (of resistance) the ~20 minute period was a good amount of time to workout. Since I was rewatching Cowboy Bebop, I didn't have to worry about the difficulty of concentrating while exercising (I wouldn't try to watch a video-lecture on rocket science while exercising if you know what I mean).

This worked out well. I'm in dire need of getting some exercise again, and I know if I set up an easily accessible system with something good to help me multitask (video, etc) that I'm more likely to actually do it. I actually have to do a bit of cleaning up in the basement in order to 'permanently' set up the bike again for use (it's smooshed in a corner right now) but that won't be a big deal once I decide exactly what I want to set up.

I'm looking for suggestions for things that I could do while I bicycle that are enjoyable enough to encourage me to get on the bike, but are easy enough that I don't have difficulty concentrating on them. I don't think simply watching random tv is going to do it since I don't do that normally anyway. What do you guys think? I'm willing to spend a little money if I deem it is worth it, but I think I just need to be creative... and with your suggestions I may come up with the perfect solution like I did a few years ago.

I'm also planning on doing that thing where you keep track of how many miles/km you've gone on the stationary bike. I think it would be nice to keep track of my positioning on a map while I work towards a destination. I don't mind if it takes months in order to get there. I'm located near New York City. What do you guys think would be some reasonable destinations for me to work towards? Please don't say Korea or something like that because I'd prefer for it to be a true land route.

Disclaimer: this has nothing to do with a New Year's Resolution; I just need to get my heart pumping a little since I'm not doing any running sports or swimming lately. And I'm probably not joining a gym because I just will never go :-/

Not much to do besides watch TV/movies.

I lift weights while I watch Proleague and House, it tends to distract me from the pain.

And I do sit-ups while I watch the games on GOM. watching SC tends to interest me enough. I think you were right on with Cowboy Bebop thing. You can't really use your hands so what else could you do, besides watch videos?

I tried playing gba/psp/etc once and it didn't work out that well... too hard to concentrate on any game with text etc. In fact... that Cowboy Bebop was actually dubbed (only good dub ever lol) and I wonder how well it would have worked out subbed.... Not sure. But like I said, I was rewatching Cowboy Bebop which is, I think, why it worked. If it was my first time I think I would have had trouble concentrating on it (which would be a shame because it's such a great anime).

I would rewatch some good VODs, or something.

Any other show you really like?

If I'm working out during a show I've never seen before, I just lift during the commercials.

Do it naked.

Then charge people a monthly fee of 15.99 to watch it on webcam.

I honestly couldn't think of anything but then I thought about biking. I think the best part of biking outside is that I can talk/chill/hang out with friends, the exercise, and the fresh air and sights. Not sure how you can replicate this though :\

I agree with the audiobook suggestion, though preferably of something that you've read before. Lately I've been just listening to animes that I've watched in the past while doing other things (reading, for the most part) as a way of getting used to listening to a language more, simply too hard to do it with something new though. It is a relatively interesting exercise to catch things that you missed the first time around when you are both watching/reading, probably also apply to audiobooks where you might hear things that you didn't pay as much attention to the first time around. I suggest LotR, though that's more of a personal preference as a LotR nerd :p

As for a destination, how does just circling NYC sound~

Learn to speak a new language? I actually have no idea how well those tapes or CDs work; the idea just popped into my head and thought I'd just throw it out there.

Hmmmm....Bring a laptop with you and watch random youtube videos? Like others have said, it doesn't seem like there's much to do besides watch....stuff.

As for a destination, why not start somewhere close to NYC, like Boston, and when you reach it, set a more difficult goal thats farther away?

Maybe some vods or something because you don't really need much focus in that (except during intense micro maybe).

Off topic: Every time I see this title on the blog threads, I start out seeing Magnetic Re.. and my mind automatically fills in Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Seriously, like for the past 2-3 times I have gone back to the blog page and I see the title, I can't help but expect to see Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

If you want to plot to go somewhere, the sky's the limit. If you do if frequently enough, you can move as far as you want. For instance, if you mouse stat your mouse, NY to SF actually only takes a year or so to finish (especially for us SC players).

Track NY to SF. You'll make it, trust me. And if you don't, you'll be half way, you'll say fuck this I'm finishing it. Just don't check it everyday and expect to see progress. Check it over several months. Take it from me, I'm a swimmer and I somehow get to thousands of miles in a calendar year.

Link Vods together; you'll be able to keep up with every league, every game, and every player because you'll exercise every day. It'll be good.

Or movies/TV episodes - House, Friends. Rewatch all the Simpsons Episodes. Or Southpark. There are a large amount of simpsons/southpark episodes out there.

Yeah I think episodes are my best bet (sorry travis I'm not getting high lol). They are a fixed length and they motivate me to hop on the bike.

How is the best way to keep track of my progress? Are there programs or websites that do this stuff? Should I just scribble some notes on paper and leave it at that?

Well, usually people have a goal that they set which ultimately determines whether or not they are making progress. For example, if your goal is to lose 10 lbs, then you would measure your progress by standing on a scale every morning or something to see whether you are losing weight.

Otherwise, I think you should just make a schedule and stick to it where you slowly increase the amount of work you do until you reach desired results.
e.g., if you are lifting weights, then you continue to increase the amount you lift over time until you reach your goal. in your case, i don't know what your goal is but make one, and once you have that it should be pretty simple to see whether you are making progress.

Yeah I understand more or less how that works. However in this case I'm not planning on a specific schedule... I'm just going to get as many miles as I can, whenever I want, until I reach my 'destination' where 'destination' means the city I'm 'cycling' towards as I add up my virtual miles. I'm just not sure how to keep track of that. It would be cool if there was a website where you enter in the starting and ending location, and then you punched in how many miles you've gone recently, and it shows where you are on a map.
