So, I'm working on becoming a Police Officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I'm half way through the recruiting process so it's a bit stressful. I was really looking forward to spending time with my family on Christmas, since I may have to miss next Christmas. I also graduated last year with my Bachelor's degree in Arts, so I owe Student Loan a bit of money.
So, while trying to make some extra cash and buy some nice presents for people this year and enjoy the holidays with my family, I'm working two full-time jobs. My day usually consists of wakeing at 8:45am and I get home around Midnight. I don't get paid great, $11.00/hr at once and $9.00/hr at the other. Our schedules were posted last week and the only days off I had in the next month were Dec. 20th and 21st, then January 04th and 05th. Besides those four days, I'll be doing the regular 8am - Midnight routine. However, yesterday I was told that I didn't have to work Christmas, because my job is going to close down for Christmas. I was excited to say the least, I called family and let them know I'd be around.
It's 1:14pm and I just got a call saying that although my unit is going to be closed, they're moving me to another one and I have to work Christmas day. I'm really not sure what happened to the staff at that unit, I'm assuming they get it off. Now I have to call family and friends again, and tell them I actually won't be around. I had also got engaged last month and this was going to be a really nice Christmas with my fiance..
I think this is one of the first years, where I actually hate Christmas. I know work is work, and life is life. There's not a whole lot I can do about either, but this really really sucks...

That's a bit shitty. If they told you that you didn't have to work for christmas, and then change their minds, you can bring that up and argue that point across. Not fair at all.

My Christmases usually really suck. But in all seriousness, I agree with TopGear. You should bring up the point that they told you that you wouldn't have to work on Christmas; you made plans accordingly. I'm not sure about the policies surrounding these issues, but it sounds kind of stupid to "trick" you like that.

You should be thankful you are working 2 jobs, I couldn't even a job in summer, economy is still in recession, people getting laid off every where. Stop bitching and be a man.

Read the bottom, I'm not bitching, just venting my frustration.

Wow that is a lot of work man. I feel sorry for you mate. Make sure to ask everyone to leave a bit of the turkey (or ham or whatever you eat) by the side for you on boxing day!

Yeah good jobs are hard to come by.. I barely managed to find a co-op job for next term and a lot of people I know are going jobless this year.
But missing Christmas because of your job really sucks. Did you try getting out of it?

Yeah, that really sucks. Horrible timing. Christmas time usually isn't that great for me either... Too much excitement built up for one day.

So I got to work today, and apparently this is what happened. We got the word that our house was closing for Christmas, so our supervisor gave the two people who worked (me and my shift partner) the time off. She informed her supervisor(s) and they said that we were allowed to close, but we were not allowed to have the time off. So my suspicions were correct. We're both working in a house that we've never been in before, with kids we've never seen before, on Christmas. If this was any other time it wouldn't be a huge deal, and if it was one person from another house covering for someone else. However, having two brand new people come in with kids who dont know us and we dont know them, is weird.
A group home, for those that dont know, is where kids who are taken away from their families for various reasons are placed. Over the course of time that you work with them, you build bonds with them. Having two new people come in and tell these kids what to do over Christmas, is in my opinion, not the best idea.
I just feel a bit shafted. My shift partner and I end up working another house so that staff can have the Christmas time off.
/sigh

Does canada have something similar to S.W.A.T.? If you are an officer, you might as well go into that line of work. You don't go on patrol and rarely get calls; but you earn more money and get to handle real guns like sub-machine guns or even assault rifles. (Although your life is technically on the line every mission.) It is quite difficult to get in though, you would need to be dedicated.

Am I missing something or what. Why would you work on Christmas for some crappy, low-paying job?
|
I don't really have the luxury of not working. I need money to pay bills.
We have something similar, it's called ERT (Emergency Response Team) and I don't have any desire to do that. For the most part you still patrol as a regular officer, you only do ERT "missions" when something happens that calls for it. I want to be on patrol, I don't want to work in an office or sit around doing nothing. As long as I can make a positive impact on the world, or mine around me, I will be happy.

That's horrible man. My advice is to get through it, and hopefully things will pick up.
I wish I could give you a hug, and give you a pat on the back. My best wishes for you. + Show Spoiler +Didn't mean to sound gay.
