edit: ok, this is for my geometry project. I just don't get how the congruent triangles help support the bridge.

I can't say for sure, but I would say the significance of congruent triangles (as opposed to random triangles) is the fact that they can take similar amounts of force/stress, whereas different sized triangles would vary in the amount of force they could take, potentially creating weak points. Triangles are of course the strongest shape. | ||
