Got a call from Acedemic coordinator, my boss and employer for the tutor job I got, and says he's gotta arrange a meeting w/ me today about some of the complains he's been receiving from my tutees.
Oh shit.
What I think the complains are like:
ComplainerA: He called me a nub at math, what does that even mean?
ComplainerB: He was so mean! He said I can't just get by memorizing the formulas and have to start caring about it or i'll fail my midterm.
ComplainerC: He's the most immature person ever, he stole my homework with a sticky hand and he was goofing around with the sticky hand the entire tutoring session!
ComplainerD: He swore alot, he's like "Fuck the solution manual, if you think ur right, ur right!"
Hukk... I just really wanted to give them the pills and not the sugars sometimes because i KNOW they probably WILL fail their midterm if they don't pick up the slack and some of the people that came in, meh. I thought better sooner to break the sugar coat than later, gotta tell them they are shit so they maybe work harder.
I'm sure I put it too harshly though, that's the problem. So gotta talk to supervisor about how to tell them that they're a piece of shit with out hurting their feelings >__>
Don't think they'll fire me though(cuz i was too awesome in meetings and a very good catalyst for discussions, or so I hope).
We'll see how it goes hahaha
Still abit screwed cuz my supervisor said, "When we receive complaints like that, we'd have to let you take a break, talk to us before going back to tutoring again. So just take a break from today's session, we can cover it for you".

You're absolutely right. I am very inconsiderate sometimes and that's probably hindering me most from becomming a good tutor T__T Gotta work on being nice and not impatient, I get upset abit too readily when I'm having an off day.

They're my age, 18-21 yr old I suppose... we're "peer tutor" so it basically means we're the same age group and brain power.

What you could say to your boss
complainer a: does not listen to me, even more so whenever i teach him/her math
complainer b: complainer b doesn't listen to my wise advice. Practice a problem, formulas are just formulas. complainer b says i am mean but i am trying to tell him the truth and he resists the idea.
complainer c: is nitpicking my teaching ways of incorporating humor and fun into the lesson. Students learn better and retain more information with fun.
complainer d: The swearing was not excessive, it was necessary because complainer d would not take me seriously.

Yea we used to sit a row or two behind our friends in lectures and randomly sticky hand pages from them. It was so great when it worked.

imo ur the best tutor... not only the sticky hand but also being straight up with them.. thats the problem in America people dont wanna hear the truth and the standards are way too low and get offended by the littlelest things etc...

By telling them they suck, your affecting their self-esteem, they will think they do suck, so all that sucking will reflect in their work. Don't tell them they suck. You have to figure out by yourself how to tell them to work harder, not that they're a peice of shit.

Tutoring can be so frustrating; I know how you feel. I've found it best to just say no a lot. It kind of alleviates the stress from someone not understanding linear relations >.< Of course, I'm not actually paid to do it, so don't listen much to me.

OK, they went to tutoring, but if they don't put in THEIR effort, then that's THEIR fault, not yours.

a lot of ppl coming in for tutoring are usually intimidated already, no need to be that straightforward and tell them they suck. they know they suck, thats why theyre there after all =p.
ive found that most ppl dont care to actually learn the material, and if they dont care, theres really no way youll get them to care, so just teach them how to pass the class.
once in a while youll get people who care though, enjoy those sessions, theyre rewardable and they make tutoring worth it.

As long as you have not been molesting them or something it should be ok, imo.
On a serious note, the "tough love" method could either make them or break them so it is risky, I think. On the other hand.. who wants to be bland?

No the problem with America is people feel like it's ok to be rude and inconsiderate of how people feel because they've been raised to think they're special and unique. NARCISSISM.
If you're a tutor Evan, you need to be considerate and encouraging. You need to play a leadership role. The key is to make them feel they can improve, but also make them realize that they have to work hard to improve. If all you do is focus on the latter, you're not a good tutor, and you need to work on how you talk with your students. I've tutored for much longer than I want to so I'm telling you that from experience.
Don't just deny or ignore complaints. The worst thing you can do at anything is to ignore feedback. If just one person is complaining, that's one thing. But if your boss has complaints with an s, you're probably doing it wrong.

What the fuck is wrong with you this is exactly the kind of narcissism I'm talking about.
The reason people go to tutoring IS because they're not good at math, and they need help. And I wouldn't call anybody who goes to CAL unintelligent. They may not be geniuses all, but most of them are above par.
