Does pretending to be a girl on bnet to advanced in certain fields, such as getting into good teams without tryouts, getting good partners in 2:2, getting taught by good people. Just overall getting treated way better. The downside is that your sorta being gay. So here's a poll, and post your oppinions.

Poll: Is it ok to pretend to be a girl on BNet
(Vote): Yes!! getting treated better rox!
(Vote): No your a homo.
(Vote): If you wanna be a girl, go have an operation.

Well you could always use pictures from other "girls" that you get on bnet, I have quite a few of those or if you were really desperate you could get your sister to hold up a piece of paper that says "nai.Protoss@Eruope" or somthing.

it's hilarious to do this on MMOs, haven't tried it on SC yet.

IMO you can't really call it gay if you look at it as a prank to see how many nubs you can fool.

The downside of being gay out weighs the benefits of being able to 'chit chat' your way onto good teams what not. i'd have to be REALLY desperate to pose as a member of the opposite gender.

Calling yourself a girl would get very tiring with people being annoying towards you.

haha. reminds me of this "girl" in our guild in WoW back in the days when it just released. He was like so popular. people helped him and gave him gold and lots of stuff. But he was also annoying. he keept writing <3 <3 after almost each word. "She" got to alot of guys by doing so. Then finally, after 1/2 year or somthin, he got busted. but he destroyed alot boy hearts after lots of guys chatted with "her" (net-sex, feelings talk etc) and HELPED him god knows how much. HE was popular! damn... such a bastard. he even posted fake pics of him(was really a girl that he once had a crush on) We had another real girl in the guild so she NEVER liked him. Guess she somehow knew. but haha, HE got ALOT of /ignores and hate whispers on the server after ppl found out. Never trust a girl in WoW unless you hear her on ventrilo / TS.
Finally if you get a girl in the guild, and she speaks on voice, after raiding with +40guys in 1/2year every night, and then hearing her voice, boooy thats like heaven ^^

In games like world of warcraft, pretending to be a girl is a huge huge huge advantage. simply, you get treated differently, in the same way cute girls in real life get treated differently. getting into top clans...pvp groups, item drops and help one normally wouldnt get.

that is really true. however i only played with real life friends and my whole guild was consisted of guys i went to college with so i never got special treatment (one of the guys kinda thing) when doing pugs and sitting on vent tho - holy shit i got everything - rarely had to roll, no one would yell at me if i didnt do enough dmg (i'd be eating or something and just sitting there. heh.)

boys are silly. it used to take me like less than 10 mins to set up a 40 man AV raid just because guys wanted to hear me talk on vent -___-

Most women (that I've known at least) on the internet don't make a point to spread the word that they're female; so whenever I hear someone claim to be female, I take it with quite a bit of salt. Even if it's somehow proven, I'm not going to suddenly treat them differently. I treat fellow gamers as fellow gamers, the gender doesn't matter.

I don't really think it matters, if someone says they are a girl, let them be a girl. a friend is a friend, and I'm no more likely to help someone on wow if they're a guy or a girl. helping someone with a quest isn't exactly a proposal for marriage.

For 3 years, a "girl" played for us in our CS team. He managed to fool the leader and got in and for 3 years, pretended to be a girl. Was quite funny when we found out.

To pretend to be a girl, you don't even have to act differently at all, and you get soooooooo many benefits on almost every game.

If you are a low level player, so around like C+/B- would you pretend to be a girl, so that a player of like B+ A- ++ would help you get better? The point of this game is to try to get better and win, so if you trick some random guy into teaching you, i mean then you just ggnore'd him.

if you take advantage of people, then you're scum. if you want these great players to help you, why not try to be their friend? just ask them questions and be yourself. many top foreigners are good people, and would probably be willing to help you, girl or not. unless you're making a living off of the game, the meaning of the game should be to have fun. I guess I know some people only have fun when they win.

usually if you make a well thought post in the strategy forum, or even a blog asking for help, there is good advice and many people willing to help you out. you could ask zia if he's happy about his choice though, I almost guarantee he'll say he's not.

When I play mmorpgs, I make girl characters. People are so desperate you can get free stuff/help without even having to lie to them, it's quite sad really. But that's a different matter, since I never actually pretend to be a girl.

I suppose it's a question of how much you respect on-line relationships. If you feel the internet is a place of lower moral standards, then pretending to be a girl may not be a big deal to you. But most people wouldn't agree and view you as a creep.

The people who would treat you better are idiots anyway. But if you're dead set on being an jerk then don't do what a guy I met on europe did: I entered a public 1v1 game and at some point between the gl hf gg go this particular person says "btw I'm a girl". That's the dumbest, most obvious give-away possible. Also, don't name yourself "xXxGurL6969", my sisters never make such blatant gender-proclaiming usernames, and they're as girl as they get.

Hey why am I giving you tips anyway, I think the only thing more pathetic than the fake girls are the guys who go crazy over them. I always follow the rule "Treat everyone you only know through the internet as a male."
No I'm never serious.

Fack, just so everyone knows i don't actually pretend to be a girl to get some of the advantages, the only time's ive ever sort of pretended was when me and my friend made 2;2 names that were really girly. I just wanted to see, what people would say. :o

I used to play Ragnarok Online, an MMORPG that had a lot of girls on it due to its anime-ish style. I guess being around so many girls in the game kinda desensitzed me from the whole "OMG IT'S A GIRL" type of thing. But yeah, I still treat them nicer simply because they are nicer and cute to be with as well.

And yeah, its always nice hearing them on TS/Vent.

Can someone explain to me, why it is so bad to pretend to be a girl? (heres a bad metaphore)

It's like starcraft, do anything you can do win including cheesing, pretending to be a girl is like cheesing, your not doing anything illegal like hacks, but your being gay.

My point is, if it helps you get better why not do it? The only thing that i have against it is, i would hate to lie to so many people all the time, especially if i became friends with them.

the comparison isn't valid. cheesing is a strategy, or a type of play style. it's not even bad to do, you could base every game around it, but you will eventually lose if you can't adapt to other styles of play. you certainly wont get very far. anyone who has something against cheesing should play NR 20 or something. regardless, cheesing is by no means "gay".

let's say you were in the top 10 foreigners and you cheesed every game, and someone suddenly was like "he cheeses every game, I'll play my style based around that". you wouldn't win many games, not that you'd get to the top 10 by cheesing every game. cheesing doesn't help you get better, it allows you to beat players superior to you by not allowing them to use their talents. a good player should expect cheese from someone worse and prepare for it, but if you beat him it just means you played a better 5 minutes or 10 minutes than he did. it's not gonna change your skill, or improve your macro/micro, and he's still gonna be better at you in a 30 minute game. I'll admit that if you beat someone, it almost always means you played better than the person in that game though.

what's wrong with it is simple, lying and taking advantage of people is wrong. if you don't find something wrong with that, then maybe nothing is wrong. you will spend your life not being who you are. some people may help you because of the fact you're a girl, but people will you help you anyways if you're a good person with a logical question.

if winning is more important than your morals, you may as well just hack. you even know it's the wrong thing to do as you admitted. the truth is, it may help you become a better player, but if you seriously can't see the problems with it, no one is going to be able to tell you why you can't or shouldn't do it.

Doesn't matter what you are, but acting what you aren't is what the issue is. Are you a dude? then you should be dishing out cock meat sandwiches to bitches, not being teabagged to get things in return, if thats how you role, head to thailand.

Pretending to be a girl just to exploit others cock-driven thinking process is kinda similar to promising someone money for the same thing, and not giving him any. Its scamming people. If your moral standards allow that go ahead and do that, I prefer keeping my integrity, even on the internet .

It's pathetic.

I met several guys pretending to be girls online and they all had some very serious issues. As already mentioned in the thread, you don't have to act much differently at all, a female character/nick will be already enough because a lot of nerds dream of having an sexy and confident online gf they will meet eventually one day. Thus, they want to believe it the truth and will always repress the thought of actually asking "Are you really a girl?" because they know that it could shatter their dreamworld.

Even when confronted with hard evidence like a recorded phone call or compromising chatlogs, some really poor guys will always try to find a flaw and won't open their eyes because they either told "her" extremely private things or don't want their constructed reality to come to an end. One time a guy told me that he knows that "she" isn't real but he wants to believe in "her" online persona, fully knowing that "she" is only pretending to be a girl.

Most of those people faking to be a girl online are as lonely as the guys they manipulate. It often starts off as a prank, but really quickly they spend more time with their new account when they begin to realize how nice people are to them all of sudden - the same way as you were a famous Starcraft player, for example. When I asked some of those guys why they did it, almost everyone said "It's like an addiction". I think it's similiar to hacking - few can stop when they realize how much better they can play with a hack. As some of those fakers I met are on the border of being social outcasts, they desperately craved the attention and could hardly stop. A new IM and E-mail together with an account like "Zia" and sweet talking is enough to fool a community like tl.net over the course of several years. Of course everyone knew beforehand, but I am afraid that if "Zia" would have been a little bit more cautious, the account would still receive as much attention as it had from the beginning.

As a side note, almost every faker I met had problems with his father. I won't interpret anything into it as it might be a coincidence, but the number was very high.

People impersonating girls often aren't even very intelligent (due to their ego-boosts they often think it though) and yet even though they actually get people to send them games, gifts and money. One guy I knew would send "her" WC3 TFT where "she" would continue to get into clans and meet new people...

The more serious people like Zia are about this, the more refined their ways of interacting with people become - for instance, they would never state their gender as to have a final excuse ("I never told you I were a girl you just assumed it") despite obviously girlish chat or indications. They also will always wait for you to start the dialogue until it's a habit and then ignore you to test your reaction (like real girls sometimes do). If they are at any time not pleased with you, they will ignore you and talk to other people of your guild/clan (again, like a real girl would to make you jealous). Unfortunately, there are a lot of weak minded (or just lonely) people to fall for those kind of tactics, even if it's only online.

When they have been made, they either quietly disappear, try to show themselves as some kind of genius mastermind ("YOU ALL FELL FOR IT") or deny everything and threaten to leave and join another guild, what will always call up some people to defend "her". In either way, most of them fix why they had been found out and start anew some weeks later. Though in some extreme cases, they suffer from a total breakdown, when they already have identified themselves too much with their fake persona who no longer is acknowledged.

I dare say that if you have an average looking friend/sister (for pics/phone calls/rl meetings), a somewhat believeable background in google and no outrageous claims like being a supermodel or millionaire (hello Zia) one will never find out what gender you actually are.

I think it is very easy to fool people over the internet and seriously causes damage when tinkering with their emotions. Just don't do it.

For those whom this concerns:

Men shouldn't be trying to start something with women online. They're only on to play a game. It's not respectful to think of women as an entity whose sole purpose is only for a relationship.

So who cares if you mistaken someone for the wrong gender! You're only mad but who is to blame? It's your fault. That's because you had the wrong intentions. There's no reason to be mad if all you wanted was someone to play a friendly game with.

I've noticed there's a real lot of girls who play Team Fortress 2. Rather odd.

However, thankfully, most of them aren't huge attention whores—at least not willingly. Though I guess when you're on a mic, it's obvious and dorks get drawn in.

Though I'll be the first to admit, I still find it funny when I'm like 'aw fuck when I die' and then a girl starts talking shit back.

On WoW, if you create a female character, there will be way more people giving you help.

In fact my cousin got some very nice free items by being a female character.

The downside is that this doesn't work if you use ventrilo or another voice chat program. Fortunately for all you abusers out there, a LOT of people are gullible when it comes to believing that you are a girl just based off text. Many men online role-playing girls.

if people want to start treating you better if you lie and pretend to be a girl (better than if you didnt pretend), then they deserve to be hoodwinked and fooled. same for the other situation as well

i mean if people treat you different based on gender, its the same as treating someone worse because they are black, total bullshit

imo its great to have a lot of guys on the internets pretend to be girls.. that way it will add to the vagueness of internet gender identity... which actually helps girls in the long run so that even if they are 'exposed' by friends as being girls, nobody will pay much attention and girls can blend in with guys and there shall ultimately be no bias.

then again it may be a psychological strategic advantage considering it seems like when people know the opponent is female, their strategy tends to be either to undercompensate by trying to go for a quick kill or overcompensate by dragging the game on and playing defense, building up and going for the clear win.

It's actually evidence that the algorithm is actually pretty good, if he had to go through a bunch of posts to find one that is analyzed as male. I'm sure you could fit the ratio of posts that are analyzed as female to male to a standard curve, and find that the overall probability that lilsusie is female is over 95% if you feed in more than, say, 10 posts.

If you need any of the alleged benefits of being perceived as a girl, that's just weak. In Starcraft at least there is nothing that people can be persuaded to give you that is worth discarding your pride, dignity, and integrity.

I would guess its from the Zia scandal on TL.
Actually having done it myself, I can testify as to how powerful it makes you feel, but you are selling an image which based on several levels of fakery and shitting on and playing with real peoples emotions.

My former roommate stole some random person's KSSN to register his game account. It turned out to be a girl's KSSN, so he had a female avatar. Everyone assumed he was female, and he actually played on it. He even had a few guys who he would call "오빠" ("oppa" or how a female calls an older brother or male friend) who would periodically gift him in-game items
Compilers are like boyfriends, you miss a period and they go crazy on you.

I've seen this happen so often that I never believe someone is actually a girl on B.net. Very few girls actually play this game.

Personally, being a girl on bnet and playing SC2 doesn't really help that much.
People are a lot more rude to me at times. If I beat them(which happens occasionally), I usually get called a queer for things like destroying their economy line or massing thors and just ruining everything.
I've been called a lot worse things as well. I'm often blamed by the person who does the worst in(if i'm playing a random 3v3 or 4v4) because i'm female.

I get some people who offer to play with me(because i'm a girl, my friends will get ignored) either just for fun, or because they want to help. I kindly reject in most cases, since I don't want to play with people if they're playing with me cause i'm a girl.

But, if you're good and you like to make people rage, pretending to be a girl is probably a fun thing for you to do. I know lots of people who do it.

Edit: LOL who bumped such an old thread? I didn't even notice.

Even if that is an old thread:

Come on I can't even believe some guys are actually really considering it on starcraft 2. I know it exists on WoW (and other mmorpg) and i just took it as a collateral effect of some guys having no honor and truth about themselves; but really on starcarft 2 ?

One of my good online friends does it frequently, and we play together quite often.
He does it on Counterstrike Source and TF2 as well.

Lol i think real girls that play fps games must try to avoid being discovered at all costs when you know how the average boy that plays these game behave. If I see someone publicly state "I am a girl" in a public fps game, 90% chance he is a guy.

and 90% is a pretty low estimate. I'd wager a guess at 99.99%

I play as a girl because my avatar and name in MMOs makes everyone assume I am one. They're surprised I know more about the game than they do. And it helps a lot in games where trash-talking is the norm, people chill out more when there's a "girl" in the area, especially when they hear you say "Stop QQing, you need to play better than that."

Generally, being an elitist in a 3rd World country makes people assume you're a chick.

Girls play guy characters so they don't get treated like a girl and harassed. Guys play girl characters to get free stuff.
