Here is what happened. I had a AMD 4400+ with a decent 256MB Geforce card /w 200 GB hard drive. I managed to mess up the motherboard and I think I fried part of it. Anyways till I go and buy another motherboad I am left with my PII 450 MHz comp with 327 MB of Ram. I think it has 4MB for its Video Card lol. My Primary Drive [C:\] is 6 GB with about 700 MB left. I have Windows on that and Starcraft + Alpha Centuri [I installed it but I have not got to playing it yet].

My second drive [D:\] is 4 GB with about 300 MB in use. I moved everything to the C drive. I am downloading Baldur's Gate.

I just want people to know I actually biked 30 minutes today to Future Shop/Staples/EB games to actually look for the original game but I could not find it. I found Baldur's Gate II and bought that and Civilization III. I wanted to play these games cause thats all this computer can take lol.

Anways I am downloading the orginal Baldur's Gate and that is about 4.19 GB which is more then my D:\ Drive lol. SO I am not downloading the last CD for the expansion cause I need CD 1-5 to install and then I can free up space and once I finish that game [might take a while or I get bored] then I can install the expansion and the Baldur's Gate II.

Questions...

1) I know Baldur's Gate is based off D&D. Should I read the rules for that. I downloaded Dungeons And Dragons - Player's Handbook (4th Edition).

2) Is it enought to read the Baldur's Gate manual. I got that off Bioware site. I will also read their FAQ for Baldur's Game after reading the manual.

3) How long does it take to finish the game. I will not be playing it on Multi-Player. Should I install the expansion right away or after I finish Balder's Gate. [I am not talking about the sequal].

Baldur's Gate is based on 2nd edition. 4th edition rules are vastly different.

Yeah, it should be enough.

3) How long does it take to finish the game. I will not be playing it on Multi-Player. Should I install the expansion right away or after I finish Balder's Gate. [I am not talking about the sequal].

ToSC adds new areas that are accessible during the normal course of the game. There's no reason not to install it right away.

1) Baldur's Gate is a decade old now and based on the D&D 2nd edition ruleset. VERY different from the current 4th edition. Reading the 4th edition rules will not help you at all and probably just confuse you.

2) The manual should be fine. It might take awhile to feel comfortable, but you will get there.

3) The expansion, Tales of the Sword Coast? Yes, the new areas are not played after you finish the original game, but added into the existing game world, meaning you can do them whenever you want and encounter them during your travels about the world. They are quite a bit harder than the original game's content, however.

Holy fuck i welcome you to play BG

I am a huge fan of BG2 but I never played BG1 and I'm thinking about getting into that.

Seriously get BG2 after you play BG1...its incredible...the music, voices, storyline, characters everything makes it seem like you're seriously role playing in a story

Install the expansion right away, all it does is add some stuff you can normally get to.

Secondly, welcome to one of the best works of art in gaming history, my recommendation is once you have beaten baldur's gate, go out and buy if you can or download planescape torment. Much better game, and also based off the second edition dnd rule set.

Icewind dale was horrible in comparison IMO, the story just wasnt enough to draw me in, nor was it really fun to play.

Here's how to install Baldur's Gate + TotSC:

If you have the 3 CD or 1 DVD version of Baldur's Gate including TotSC:
No patches needed TotSC 1.3.5512 is latest version.

If you have the old 5 CD version + 1 CD ToTSC:
1. Install Baldur's Gate
2. Make sure game version is 1.1.4315. If not, install official patch
3. Install Tales of the Sword Coast
4. Install official TotSC patch version 1.3.5512
5. For multiplayer only: Install official TotSC DirectX 8+ patch (self-extracting unpacker, just unpack to Baldur's Gate directory, it will extract 1 file (BGMain2.exe))

Next, edit baldur.ini:
- add "memory access=100" (if missing) to [Game Options],
then you can activate blood in the options
- change "Path Search Nodes=4000" to 32000,
then you have much better path finding
(requires at least a Pentium II)

Icewind Dale isn't bad, you just have to know beforehand that it's mostly combat and almost no story, no NPC banters etc., then you won't be disappointed when you try it.
It's like a dumbed down Baldur's Gate for the Diablo crowd.

BG 1, Tales of the Swordcoast, BG 2, Throne of Bhaal series is amongst my top 3 singleplayer games of all time along with the Fallout and Jagged Alliance series.

(Of all series the 2nd games are the best for me somehow )

Better path finding? That makes one optional fight nearly impossible. ~_~

Honestly playing BG1 without using Tutu (a program that lets you play BG1 in the BG2 engine) would be really painful. Problem is you'd need like 8gb, since both games need to be fully installed.

It's a worse game in almost every regard, but BG2 is probably the best CRPG ever made, so that's kind of a given.

But playing BG1 before BG2 could put you off the series, and it'd be a shame since BG2 owns so much. I'd reccomend just playing BG2 first, and then when you get your comp back install BG1 + TOSC with Tutu and replay the whole series.

Yep (Easy)Tutu is great, but I prefer Baldur's Gate Trilogy. It basically does the same (allow you to play BG1 in the BG2 engine with all the benefits including higher resolution, pressing TAB to see what objects you can interact with, and other things).
In addition to that, it lets you have a continous experience from BG1 to BG2 (with a special video sequence after finishing BG1, and you'll automatically keep your main character of course). It connects BG1 and BG2 seamlessly.
Tutu however is closer to the original BG1. With BGT, everything is BG2 based (no compromises), so you'll have all the BG2 spells, item graphics, and other stuff while playing BG1. I like it that way though.

BGT? But what if one wants to use TDD?
