hi guys. my years of being an ugly scrawny nerd have passed since i graduated, although i'm still pretty scrawny and ugly... and nerdy... T_T lol jk!!

anyway, now that my hair flutters in the wind and the sunlight bounces off my beautiful smile, causing all the girls in the area to swoon, i have only my bad posture to slow me down in my quest for being a gorgeous person.

so!! since i figure it's a pretty common thing on computer nerd introverts like us, i'd like to know if you guys have any idea how to fix bad posture, like exercises, etc. i'm not looking for an answer like "stand up straight", this just makes me sore after a prolonged period of time. thanks!!

Firstly getting female attention has a little to do with posture, there are more influential variables. But posture to get better posture u away from the computer. its as simple as that. More time u spend on computer the more back problems. hit the Gym strengthen innner core muscles, become Alpha male. and u will win girls and have a a straight back. gym takes comitment.

just keep on reminding yourself to stand up straight, sit up straight, etc. and it will just become natural

Get WiiFit and do Yoga every day?

I don't really think it's helped my posture that much, because it really depends on how my legs feel on any given day how well balanced I am. I've been leaning heavily left and forward the past few days because my legs hurt from all the exercises. -_-

Not really a serious suggestion- but I almost feel obligated to make a snarky comment because it nags me every day about my posture. Are you talking about standing or sitting (or both?). I did a quick check in the mirror and I don't really seem to have any problems while standing, but I know I do while sitting.

http://www.freewebs.com/supertaller/index.htm

lololol, follow the directions strictly and you can fix bad posture and possibly gain a small height increase
chapter 7 has pics of the exercises.

can't really vouch for it working, though I did find it on one of those 'how to grow taller' forums

sleep on a harder mattress, find an ergonomic chair, actually lean back on said ergonomic chair.

ofc remind yourself of not hunching over the comp, but if you have a good chair, you can put it closer to the comp and leaning back is probably more comfortable than hunching over anyway.

the reason you get sore is because it is a workout for the muscles that hold u up in that posture

so those muscles are getting stronger

also it helps if u can keep urself interested in stuff. it's much harder to hold good posture when you're bored.

Kyphosis is fairly easy to fix BUT BUT BUT you must be committed to it.

Generally, there's a few notable things about kyphosis which are:
1. Forward head translation (viewed from the side)
2. Rounded shoulders
3. Curvature of the thoracic spine

#1 is fixed by tightening your neck flexors (mostly sternocleidomastoid) and stretching out the muscles in the back of your neck (traps, levator scap, etc.).

#2 is fixed by doing exercises that involve scapular retraction such as any type of rowing activity -- pendlay rows, machine rows, bent over rows, front lever pullups, etc. In conjunction, the CHEST and anterior shoulders should be stretched. You can do this in a doorway with arms out wide at right angles and the stepping forward to get a good chest stretch.

#3 is fixed through stretching of the t-spine. This can be accomplished, for example, by getting a foam roll and lying on top of it (this will also help with scap retraction/chest stretch). Overhead squats are also some great mobility work and also helpful through doing supermans on the ground or hip extensions focusing on squeezing your spinal erectors.

However, the post important thing to note is that you MUST focus on posture all of the time. I fixed mine in a couple of days by constantly reminding myself ever 10 or so minutes (however you need to...) to fix my posture. Once you get in the habit of doing it, it will come naturally and you don't have to worry about it as much. If you do this along with the exercises above you should have no problem fixing it very quickly.

And yes, as travis said if you start holding a better posture you WILL be sore for a couple of days most likely. This is good and means your muscles are getting used to better/correct positions if you are doing it right.

Backpacks are like the number 1 reason for crooked backs among young people...

When I was young (3-6) my parents made me sleep on wood covered by a thin (like t-shirt thin) blanket to make sure my back grew straight. Maybe that was just an excuse though, seeing as we were poor. Assuming it had some value (I do have good posture), I'm still not sure if it could help you now that you have mostly stopped growing. See your chiropractor?

you guys must be walking rather retarded to be getting back damage from a backpack, maybe try keeping ur back straight?

for OP, maybe try standing in front of mirror for 3 hours focussing on standing up straight with good posture. and then for the rest of the week constantly think about sitting straight / standing straight with good posture. i dont know, maybe write all over your arms "STAND UP STRAIGHT" "NO CROOKED BACK" "STRAIGHT BACK GETS THE GIRLS" to remind you to sit up straight

sorry i dont have any other ideas, just perseverance and repetition?

I'm still fixing my posture, but it's already lot better now. I only slouch slightly when I'm standing up and opening my wallet, or something similar.
All I do is position the workspace around my computer so that sitting up straight is natural and comfortable. Also when walking around, I constantly remind myself to keep my back straight. It is meant to be difficult, your muscles aren't use to it, but you have to push yourself.
No I'm never serious.

The type of chair you have could affect this also, especially for people like us who sit at the computer.

Stomach strength is also a big part of all back issues. My sitting posture is usually not that great but when I walk I stand tall tightening my abs a bit and pulling my shoulder blades back.

I have really bad posture too. I think its just one of those things that tends to come with height (I know at least 2 other guys who are 6'2" or taller who have bad posture as well). Not sure how to fix it. I've tried to 'stand up straight' for a few weeks and correct my slouching all the time. Didn't really do anything.

Contrary to belief, bad posture is not from lack of confidence. It just conveys lack of confidence to people via misread body language.

Its just one of those things yubee, We have to bend down to get our hair wet in the shower, bend down to see our face in the mirror, to wash our hands in the sink, chairs, cars, couches,&beds not made for people that are taller. fuck even now looking at the monitor I'd have to prop it up like 1-2 feet in order for it to be at exact eye level while sitting up completely straight. (watch out for the branches and spiderwebs)
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)
