Yea thats got to be one of the heroes of might and magic games
Although it also kinda sounds like an actual board game I used to play as a kid, called Dark Tower, which is probably the most awesome board game ever made.

10 years ago, that is command and conquer:generals era. Have you checked Heroes of might and magic 1? it is way more ugly than 3 :d. What sort of old computer, Atari, C64, DOS, Windows?

I used to play this so much with my friends,wwith Hotspot xD Hell was my favourite race, we still didn't know about Necro being OP lol.
HOMM4 was... nice I guss, though we kept playing 3 for MP. Haven't played the new ones to be honest.
@OP: Age of Wonders? Only one I can think of that is similar to what you're saying, with worse graphics than HOMM3. Was addicting in its own way though.

Im pretty sure it was windows. Could have been dos but i doubt it.
The game was completely 2d, and you were a square that moved along the board.

It was basic colors. Like ocean was one shade of blue and i dont really remember what color the board was. I played this game when i was like 5 so maybe go back like 14 years. My friend is coming back from new york next week so i will ask him. Maybe he will know.

He found later found it and the game was called merilin
