But a few hours later, Joe didn't feel so well. In fact, he felt even more tired than before he had the coffee. Well, Joe thought, all he needed was another cup of coffee to make things right. So Joe had another cup of coffee. And he felt better again. Not as good as last time, but still, better.
The coffee wore off again another few hours later. Now Joe was feeling very tired indeed. He would need coffee to get over this undesirable feeling. Joe had two cups of Joe, and he stayed up through the night.
This process repeated for a few days. Joe began drinking 5, 6, 7 cups of coffee at a time. After all, he felt like shit if he didn't. So why not?
Joe's friend began to worry about him. "Hey dude, why don't you take it easy? Just take a break from the coffee. Sleep it off, bro. You'll feel better if you do."
Joe looked at his friend like he was insane. "Are you crazy? This is the most tired I've ever felt in my life, and you expect me to go without coffee now?! This is the worst possible time to give up coffee. Just let me have some more, until this overwhelming tiredness goes away, then I will cut back."
But Joe didn't cut back. Then it came, the crash. Joe found himself so tired and weak, he thought he might die. He drank cup after cup after cup, but no matter how much he drank, he couldn't overcome the horrible, overwhelming, impending feeling.
Finally, Joe went to sleep. And he never woke up again.
