So I have a small "moral" problem that I can live with but wanted to try and get some opinions on.

So:
I purchased a graphics card from Best Buy and will be using this for a few days while a better card is shipped to me from Newegg.com(For reference I purchased a XFX 7850 1gb card from Best Buy for $200 and purchased the XFX 7850 2gb card from newegg.com for $180).

Now explaining all this to my wife about why we have to float $400 bucks for a few days while I wait for my new card to be delivered from newegg, I explained that as soon as the newegg card gets here I'll be returning the 7850 1gb to best buy because they suck at pricing things competitively. My problem I guess comes because my wife says I'm abusing the return policies just so I can play my games smoother for a few days and that I will be hurting best buys bottom line.

My response was something along the lines of, "I'm not technically breaking any rules, I bought it, trying it out for a few days, then I plan on returning it because it doesn't fit my needs." Her response was that I could of just as easily used my old card for a few days just to get by.

SO my question is this:
Poll: If it were you, would you....

Return the Best Buy card and use my old card until the newegg card arrives (25)

60%

Use the Best Buy Card for a few days and then return it when the newegg card arrives (13)

31%

Cancel your newegg order and just keep the card from Best Buy (4)

10%

Your vote: If it were you, would you....

(Vote): Cancel your newegg order and just keep the card from Best Buy
(Vote): Use the Best Buy Card for a few days and then return it when the newegg card arrives

I dunno, you are "renting" this card from best buy with no intent to reimburse them or in any other way help them benefit.

Seems scummy but if YOU don't have any issues with it, well best buy's rules allow it more or less. I'm not here to tell you what to do, but I know I certainly would feel terrible pulling that stunt.

Since you already have the Best Buy card just use it until the new card arrives. You'll be returning it anyways, Best Buy wouldn't miss it for a few days.

Having said that, your wife is right. Why did you buy the card from Best Buy just to use it for a few days? Were you really that desperate you couldn't wait?

Nice excuse for yourself there, are you trying really hard to believe that yourself? :D

You didn't want to "try" anything if you know you'll return it anyway.
Pretty low move in my book :/

This is the flip side, one could argue you are simply abusing an abusive policy and showing Best Buy why they need to change. Though the moral argument is definitely that you are abusing an already hurting company that doesn't need more issues. Return the card, its the right thing to do.

Personally, I don't treat big businesses with the same moral standard I'd treat individuals or even small local businesses. Most of them treat their employees and even customers like crap, so gaming them within limits is fine for me, personally. They do much worse in the big scheme of things, and probably could use a little rules abuse themselves. I don't see a problem with you keeping the card for the time being; people do that crap with tvs for the super bowl and other big events.

Edit: I wouldn't have bought something knowing I'd return it in the first place, though. That just isn't worth the hassle to me, and seems a little weird that you'd buy something for just a few days.

Yeah I don't think you did anything morally wrong here, it's just weird to me that you would bother buying and returning a card for a few days' worth of play. Voted keep it and return it, but it isn't what I would have done.

Possible to rationalize everything.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Coming from a business perspective, big companies price their products so that there is an allowance for bad debt, warranty exchanges, returns, and other damages including theft. Renting products and then returning them is something that companies already account for. Some companies issue a restocking fee while others charge more in the first place. So when you rent out a graphics card from Best Buy, yes you are cutting their profits, but not any profits that they didn't already anticipate. What happens to your graphics card is that it will probably be used for warranty exchanges.

Keep the fucking card until the new one arrives, but you better take good care of it. If you fuck it up, they won't take it back a week later.

Morals don't only apply to you, they are a global proposition. Just as it would be wrong to think you are an upstanding citizen simply because you don't try to cause harm, I think it would also be wrong to think abusing Best Buy's return policy is immoral. Best Buy is a large company. While it is owned by people, it is designed to make money on it's own terms. If you are exploiting these terms, then the rules are not doing what they should in an ideal world. I don't think this should be considered a moral issue.

What you're doing is shitty, but then again every corporation in the world abuses shitty loopholes similar to this just to make themselves an extra few bucks so... if you're okay with being as shitty as the majority is, might as well proceed with your plan!

In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

When Best Buy realizes you were just using them they will feel terrible. You should feel be ashamed of yourself for hurting their feelings.

I don't know if I'm a terrible person, but I find absolutely no moral dilemma in this situation. Maybe it's just because in the U.S. economy, customers have almost no power whatsoever, but I have absolutely no sympathy for Best Buy in this situation. You're following policy and returning the product.
A sound mind in a sound body, is a short, but full description of a happy state in this World: he that has these two, has little more to wish for; and he that wants either of them, will be little the better for anything else.

You don't have to worry about Best Buy's financial well being. If they were losing money on it significantly, they wouldn't have such policies.

Best Buy will let you return a used and open graphics card and get your cash back?

I work at a fairly large retail store and it's our policy that if it is an open electronic you get an exchange or store credit period. This doesn't stop people from renting electronics, but it does keep their money in house.

(I personally have no issue with what you are doing though. If their return policy allows it then go for it!)

Honestly, I don't understand why you can't wait the couple of days to get the new graphics card. Just use the old one then switch once you get the new one. It doesn't matter if it's best buy or some other company, since you didn't buy the card with the intent to try and then decide to keep or not. You bought the card just to use then return which is not the same so imo at least, I find that wrong(didn't know what other word to use, scummy? XD)
