EPTI have never really played many RTS games - Dune 2 spoiled everything for me.
C&C felt like a downgrade from Dune 2 as an RTS too many gimmicks, less races, less unit variation and it was by Westwood - I was a massive Dune book nerd as well and was dissapointed that it seemed like they'd ditched the Dune name to be cheap.
I bailed on RTS ever since then, and played other games competitively ( FPS, poker [ my main income ], and got competent at other competitive genres for fun ) but never really RTS. Dune 2 was a magical game for me and nothing ever really seemed to match it although I dabbled with TA/Starcraft/BW/ on release but never more than a few hours each as they failed to live up to the legend from my childhood.
As I got more into competitive games later I discovered TL and the BW scene and was a massive lurker for years, frequently following the bw matches and was quite looking forward to Starcraft 2 as a way to get into a new genre.
I managed my goal of getting Diamond in Season 1 ( started as copper in beta ) and then felt no desire whatsoever to play the game - I played my placement games each season but literally no more in the first 4 seasons and dropped to platinum, complaining about how bad zerg was and I'd play more when it was more balanced :p Around the end of Season 4 a friend started playing again and I played a lot of games in a row the very last 2-3 days of that season just to beat him on points for bragging rights - I managed it - but in doing so I found myself actually enjoying playing the game for it's own sake rather than to accomplish any goal.
Season 5 I had a decent season, finishing top of platinum(ish ), with my sights set on getting back into diamond.
~150 games into this season and I just made it back.
Along the way I bought my RL friends Starcraft 2 for their birthday presents and converted them from haters "It doesn't interest me, it isn't command and conquer " into a pair of silver bordering on gold level players that now watch GSL religiously :p
