Respect. EMTs are amazing. I've had a few false alarms when I was getting screened for tachacardia(?) in the middle of the night before I knew it was something else, and the EMTs were always so awesome about it.

You know, not to mention, they like, save lives and stuff... :p

I use to work in a small town near the border. The EMTs/Paramedics in the United States seem to have a huge wage variance depending on where they work and if they are BLS/ALS. In Canada the salary is a little better, varying from $16 - $26/hr for PCPs, ACPs will make more depending on where they are working. Most provincial services here don't employ EMTs anymore.

It sucks to make low wages but if you have the skills you can move anywhere in the world! Move somewhere where you can get paid a decent amount. In my home town they are hiring right now for EMT positions starting at $25 per hour.

Calgary is a great city with a real culture of hard work and entrepreneurialism. You should look into it, seriously. I moved here 5 years ago so I could make more money and I've never regretted it for a second.

I work in Alabama. I've been an EMT since 2008, volunteering since 2007. Paramedic since last year, would have been one in 2009 but quit school when my dad (who was also a firefighter/paramedic, and chief of EMS operations) died. My pay is about average in Alabama.

When I was doing lifeguard training, I gained a huge respect for EMS.

I'll summarize our training in one sentence for you.

Keep him/her alive until EMS arrives.

Sorry for sounding like a jerk but i know wayyyyy too many ems people that are just plain unrespectable besides the job they do

There are still EMR positions in Alberta that are non rigs with things such as IFT or in the more rural areas (I think I saw a few postings last week or so), however I think we are seeing those positions disappear mainly due to the level of care that an EMR can actually give. As well, working in the rural areas we also have many EMR first responders/volunteer fire fighters etc.

As for many being bitter, I find people do get burnt out due to mistreatment/stress but with saying that most of the people I have met in this career have just been absolutely awesome.
