A little history, rewind to last summer, I buy Sc2 because some friends bought it and I used to play broodwar customs like crazy way way back. I played all summer watched Day 9 and tournaments constantly and got to silver as zerg then just kinda quit playing for whatever reason. Fast forward to early this year (may), I pick Sc2 back up begin playing as terran get to platinum, play protoss fall to gold and realize I love protoss, play for a while, watch tons of MLG and even attended blizzcon. Suffice it to say I really enjoy watching starcraft.

I recently quit playing starcraft daily in favor of LoL then recently DotA followed by DotA 2. I played DotA quite a bit few years ago and really enjoyed it. I also recently got the DotA 2 beta and have been playing it mostly non stop since I got it.

But this has become somewhat of a problem for me, you see I really really really enjoy esports in general. I spend 90% of my free time watching Sc2 streams. I want nothing more than to be a part of the scene but I know that is not really an option, I would however love to play in tournaments regardless of what level they are. This isn't to say I want top play in gold tournaments but I would just love to compete in master level tournaments/in house dota games. That is bold because this is the point of this post. I simply want to compete in a game and maybe stream regardless of viewers.

So this is where I need to decide which game to pick. I can't play both because Sc2 requires so much practice and DotA requires networking both of which would require a lot of time and effort.

1) I enjoy watching starcraft more than I do DotA 2
2) I am much better overall at DotA 2 simply because I am naturally better at ARTS games
3) I have a job and am starting college right away so my practice would likely be about 2-3 hours a day
4) DotA is a team game and Sc2 is a solo game which makes a pretty big difference, both in ease of competing and individual skill needed
5) DotA 2 isn't released yet and as such we have no idea how big the game will be
6) Dota 2 is fairly new and I would have an edge on other people who weren't in the beta for connections/skills/game knowlege/practice
7) It's much easier to break into a game when you are at the forefront of the developing scene like DotA 2 right now.

So there you have it, I can't decide but maybe you can shed some light to help me make a decision. as it stands I don't know what game I enjoy more but I know I can easily queue dota games but that's mainly because of no ladder/more relaxing in pubs.

Hmmmm from what you have presented...

It seems like you enjoy the gameplay of the dota genre but a spectator enjoy watching starcraft? That is what I can tell from what you have shared. Perhaps put more playtime into dota 2 and just watch starcraft for a good time. Anyone with half a brain knows that dota 2 is going to dominate the dota arts moba whateve shit genre scene once it comes out.

I'm inclined to say you would be right that I enjoy playing the dota genre more and enjoy spectating starcraft more. I feel this is actually the truth, the big weight that keeps the scale even is the ease of practicing and playing a solo game vs a team game and the already established sc2 scene. Then again at the level I would be playing at in Sc2 the scene would likely be inconsequential anyway.

I think the only thing you need to consider is which game you enjoy playing more. At 2-3 hours a day (or even most days) you can definitely become proficient at either one.

edit: I guess you are saying your sc2 skill level is pretty low. There are tons of people willing to help for free, at least I seem to see threads on that pretty often. With 2-3 hours of play and occasional outside tips and self-evaluation of builds/why you are losing I would think you can improve pretty quickly. I guess I'm saying you shouldn't not choose sc2 just because you fear its difficulty.

I can easily see myself spending more time playing DotA 2, the big issue holding me back from diving right in is the uncertainty on whether focusing on DotA is actually a good idea.

Just play whatever you want to. If you are good enough, you will make it to the top anyways. I used to play to play 3 different games at the same time (RTCW:ET, CS 1.6 and WC3) and i was still pretty good in all of them. Oh and starcraft 2 is definately not a hard game at all. >_<

Unless you have a team who you play with regularly any competitive Dota like game is basically a closed door to you. Stick around in Dota2 for a bit and try and find 4 other people who can put in good practice for 2 hours a day. If you can't swap to SC2.

This is what I meant, while I enjoy DotA 2 more than Sc2 on a purely entertainment level I am not playing just for fun I also want to compete, and like you said finding a team is more than half the battle so that's why I really can't make the decision. I mean I know some people who play DotA 2 and am actually playing an in house game tomorrow but the chance of them wanting to make an actual team would be close to none.

Just to put this out there I don't think Sc2 is amazingly hard to reach masters, I know if I put the time in, analyze replay and get proper practice I can reach master fairly easily.

I'd do w.e you enjoy the most. Personally, if you only have 2-3 hours a day, I'd go sc2 because dota games can be very long. However, I have played both BW, SC2 and now Dota 2, and I gotta say dota 2 might be the best game i've ever played in my life. Imo it will be just as competitive as sc2 if not more.

I have enough time to practice DotA 2-3 hours was more of a guesstimate to gauge responses, some days I spend an entire day outside of the gym and cooking at the computer, and I have to agree DotA 2 is possibly the most fun I've had in a video game since, ironically, sc2.

But at the same time one could argue Dota is a less mechanically demanding game and requires less practice in that regard. It's also a game where skill degrades less if one needs to take a longer break.

If you want to make an impact as a player you need to divert some of your watching-time to actual playing-time. Apart from that stick with the game that captures you the most as you want to spent the most time AND have fun with that game.
I just love video games, what's your excuse?

Id tell you focus on SC2. But you dont have to choose one or the others really. Just divide your time. You can do it!

If you want to accomplish something go for Starcraft 2. You can get really far(High grandmaster) with 2/3 hours of practice a day(Deliberate practice) The problem with teamgames that it's always so hard to get all your teammates online at the sametime and in my experience there is always someone who just doesn't care and fuck around instead of fixing mistakes. You also have to find good teammates wich can take alot of time aswell.

I am bad for not being able to split properly I just end up ignoring one then switching back. It's never a good balance.

I watch while I play to be completely honest.

See this was my train of thought as well for Sc2. At the same time however when dota 2 does get bigger and actually has a rating system finding a team to play the random tournaments with shouldn't be a huge issue.

Whatever you do, don't quit school

I think the team aspect of Dota makes it very fun to play, but harder to watch, and vice-versa for SC, which can get lonely to play, doing the same build for the hundreth time by yourself. But I think Dota 2 has a brighter future worldwide, it's already huge even before release and might take quite a lot of people away from HoN or LoL, but you'd need to find a good team to go places, though.

Haha yea that thread is something else. I agree, that is the reason I stopped playing Sc2, Bnet feels like a single player game with really smart AI. It gets very lonely and since I have no friends who play Sc2 anymore I just got bored.

You sound like you want to play DotA 2 to me, I am currently feeling the same but realized I only like spectating Sc2 and not overly playing it, there are a lot of people like this.
