This has me a bit pissed, I half wanted to post it in general, but couldn't justify it. Basically my school sent out an email that they are raising tuition, which is totally fine and legal, even though it sucks for us how expensive public schools are getting. But basically I payed my tuition over a month ago (around 2600$) and received this email on August 9th.

August 9, 2011

Dear Students,

I am writing to share with you the news that the CUNY Board of Trustees at a meeting on July 21, 2011, voted to adopt a tuition increase for the 2011-2012 academic year. Beginning this fall, tuition for full-time undergraduates will increase by $150 per semester; tuition for full-time graduate students will increase by $240 per semester. Part-time and nonresident students will also see an increase in their tuition for the fall semester in their per credit rates. The new tuition rates are posted on the Bursar’s web page at http://www.jjay.cuny.edu/232.php.

Although this tuition increase will cause hardships for many John Jay students and their families, it is important that we enact modest tuition increases to maintain the quality of your education at John Jay. As you know, in recent years, CUNY has experienced deep budget reductions which total over $300 million. As a result of a historic agreement between Governor Cuomo, the State Legislature and CUNY this past June, the University is now authorized to increase tuition by up to $300, each year, for the next five years. This plan will allow you to anticipate the cost of your college education and provide financial stability and predictability for John Jay College and CUNY.

In order to assist our neediest students, the legislation also requires that a tuition credit be given to those students who are eligible for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) when annual tuition exceeds $5,000. More information will be available on this program shortly. For information on other forms of financial assistance, visit the Tuition and Financial Aid web page at http://www.jjay.cuny.edu/189.php or contact the Enrollment Management Call Center at (212) 663-7867.

If you have already paid your tuition and fees for this semester, we will be adjusting your bill over the next several days. You will receive a notice in the mail if you have any balance due after all forms of assistance are applied. If you are still in the process of registering, the tuition bill in eSIMS will reflect your new tuition charges.

Thank you for your understanding and support for John Jay.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Travis
President

This is a bit weird, and I check my bill which as of two weeks ago was completely paid off, and its now saying I owe them another 150$. To me this is roughly like going into bestbuy, purchasing a nice big HD Television, then going home and receiving a letter from bestbuy saying they have decided to raise the price of the television you had bought 3 weeks ago and would like you to pay them an extra 150$, even though you purchased the item when it was cheaper. Imagine if any retail chain tried to do that? Shit would not fucking fly, but how is a school allowed to do this? It smells like shit to me and I emailed them about it. The only thing I could find by googling was this link
http://www.freeadvice.com/law-questions/can-a-college-university--65132.htm

Just as a fun fact, if you read the email they say they are going to raise the cost of tuition by 300$ each year for the next 5 years. That means in 5 years the cost of going to my college will have increased by 30% from about 5k a year, to 6.5k. For those of you wondering, I go to John Jay College which is in Uptown Manhattan.

Has anyone else experienced this shit with their school? I imagine this is happening for other schools in the CUNY system, its kind of bullshit. Basically if you don't pay them you get all your classes dropped by them which just feels like extortion.

But hey, look on the bright side at least you don't attend a private school.

Unfortunately tuition increases, in the States at least, have been outpacing inflation by quite a bit. There are many reasons for this, for example - government subsidized loans which allows more and more people to attend school and tenure for professors which makes it hard to drop subject matters with little student interest.

Anyway, the fact that they apprised you of a tuition increase after you paid the bills still sucks but still, do expect tuition increases regularly.

as the email says

As you know, in recent years, CUNY has experienced deep budget reductions which total over $300 million

it's a combination of increasing costs for college/university and state/federal government giving less money to the state college/universities

constant cost increases (beyond for inflation) have been happening for at least a decade in California

the cost increase timing is obviously bad though

The U.K has just had unbelievable tuition fee hikes. Although our universities where a lot cheaper than almost anywhere else in the world before the rises.

In my opinion universities are a service that should be run by the government. Unfortunately nowadays they are run as business for profit. This is why we see all across the U.K universities dropping really important subjects like chemistry because they cost too much per student to justify as business. Chemistry is a core subject and incredibly important for our nation to remain having a stake in the development of. The government should be looking at this and realise that we need to invest in chemistry for the development of our country.

What a university should be doing is providing as many people as possible with useful skills to get a job and providing business and industry with a good pool of good well trained workers. However the business model is providing as many people as possible with the cheapest to run degrees as possible. Thus we are ending up with largely just the rich going to university and them largely only getting useless degrees. (the universities love courses like film studies and English because they can provide the minimal teaching and still cash the £3,000 a term per student).

This happening all across England with most of our services. Rail should be a service provided and run by the government. Not to make money just as a service and pay for its existence. However with companies running it as a business profit takes over.
Example: The mainline train from Exeter to London is too crowded. So what should happen as a service is that more carriages are laid on right? No what happens as a business model is they jack up prices because that lowers demand and they don’t have to spend any more money. It makes me a little sick to see our country run this way

Another problem is with kids finishing their A levels and deciding what they want to do. Most people don’t know and chose a something that sounds fun and don’t really think about the consequences of choosing something that might actually help them get a job. As a result of this we have about 2,000 graduates graduating each year in degrees in forensic science (because they saw CSI and think it looked cool) even though we have only about 500 positions in total (not per year in total) available in the whole of the country. So the vast majority of these graduates have a completely useless degree. The universities don’t care they got £3,000 from every student each term they don’t care what happens when you finish. The whole thing should be run by the government who should realise there are only so many jobs and only allow only so many positions at university. This means we get the best forensic scientist and no one with a wasted degree.

Sorry I may have my own axe to grind but it sounds pretty much like what’s happening to you college too.

Edit:spelling
Also the forensic science numbers are completly made up I have no idea. But that's a pretty good example even if I don't know the exact numbers.

That does suck. But look on the bright side. It's only $150. Not a while lot by NY standards.

I've seen some schools go up almost $1000 in one semester. My undergrad uni went up by $2000+ over the 4 years I went there.

Usually, it's a snowball effect. The board increases little by little, gets comfortable, and starts to increase by larger amounts. Hopefully that doesn't apply here.

As for your Best Buy analogy. It's kind of different. The service hasn't even been rendered to you yet. On the flipside, Best Buy can change their installation charges anytime prior to actually doing it for you. I think that's a more accurate analogy, although it's still not perfect.

Well yeah, I understand the amount isn't that high, but trying to make me pay more after I already paid? That's little ridiculous. Raising it is fine, but trying to raise it after I already paid is retarded and unreasonable.

Did they raise it before or after it was due? If you chose to pay early, then they raised it before it was due, then there is really nothing to complain about. If it was already due, and THEN they raised it, then that sucks.

However, for 150 or 300 bucks or whatever there's no point in screwing around... finishing your program(s) is way too important for that.

It's funny, all the girls' are majoring in subjects that have a stereotyped that they are unable to find a job after graduation.

I'm going to University first year in Sept and I just paid off my minimum amount at the bank. The fees that they quoted while I applied was around 5 thousand and when I saw the final invoice it was at 6.2 thousand. Epic amounts of fees added on top of courses.

Important Notice - Tuition Increase of 9.6% effective Fall Quarter 2011
On July 14, the UC Regents approved an additional tuition increase of $1,068 for 2011-2012. This 9.6% tuition increase will impact the Fall/Wtr/Spg Quarter tuition & fee assessments. To incorporate this change, the main campus Financial Aid Office will be revising financial aid budgets between July 25 - August 8. During this time, 2011-2012 MyAwards may be unavailable for periods of time while various educational program populations are being revised. Our Health System student populations will likely be revised during the latter part of this time period.

Wow this exact situation happened at my school as well. (I go to Brooklyn College). My tuition deadline was July 21st which I paid full at that time and just last Monday, August 8, I get an e-mail saying I have an outstanding balance of 150 dollars. I was like WTF so I checked and it really did show I owed 150 dollars more when my DEADLINE ALREADY PASSED WHICH I ALREADY PAID FOR.

Unlike OP, I got no notifications, no prior notice, no e-mail like OP got about this change until when I noticed the 150 dollars raise and I called up my school and they told me I have until 8/18 to pay up the 150 dollars or risk the fear of my classes being dropped. Seriously wtf...

In the end, I had no choice but to get 150 dollars in but like OP mentioned, this is absolute bs, charging people's tuition AFTER DEADLINE AND AFTER PEOPLE PAID. Utterly disgusting. (And no financial aid here at all).

And is this even legal when they didn't even charge the 150 dollars before the original tuition deadline and charge it afterward? I agree with that Best Buy analogy.

I'm glad I'm on my last semester, after all this madness, I have no desires to donate a single penny to my college later when I make lots of dough.

I just finished school so tuition hikes are all behind me now, but they've been rising since... the beginning of 21st century. I paid 9000/9300/9600/10000 for my four years @ U of Toronto Engineering (all figures CAD, which is pretty much par with USD now anyway).

The jackasses just resent me the statement as an answer to my email. I told them that was BS and that it was illegal to raise the price after the fact. Here is the lovely nonsequitar I got in response.

Dear Student,

This was passed by the CUNY Board of Trustees, therefore, making it a legal action. This payment must be satisfied by August 22nd, 2011.

This happens all the time. My tuition was $45,000/year when I was a freshman. It was then $46,500 a year when I was a sophomore. It's over $47,000 for my upcoming junior year. It sucks ass, but it has to be done. Colleges all around the country are going through financial troubles. It's 100% legal as long as the board in charge says it's ok and it's not during the actual school year you're paying for (as far as I know).

I'm glad I'm on my last semester, after all this madness, I have no desires to donate a single penny to my college later when I make lots of dough.

That's incredibly childish. College's don't exactly have an easy time paying for all of the services college students get. You can't just say that just because they had to raise the price means that they're terrible people. It's not like they're just sitting by and saying, "Lets make more money off college students!" Paying for a college to run takes a LOT of money. Hell, my college (sitting at ~$47,000 a year) only makes about 80% of the money required to pay off yearly fees from yearly tuition.
A sound mind in a sound body, is a short, but full description of a happy state in this World: he that has these two, has little more to wish for; and he that wants either of them, will be little the better for anything else.

I have no issue with them raising my tuition really, the fee is small, but the way they did it by sending an email out with 14 days notice until they just drop your classes was bullshit and is unfair, if they raised it for next semester I wouldn't have a problem, but they expect me to just come up with another 150$ out of no where, which is just douche. Not to mention I saw the email by chance considering my school email gets flooded and I rarely check it.

Even in Canada I have experienced this, although not by such a large margin and I totally agree about your Best Buy analogy -- that is how it feels and it pains me to know that when I graduate I have to shake hands with those very same people that increased tuition on me every single year of my undergraduate experience.
