So I don't know exactly how many other people are in my position. I can speak and understand Mandarin just fine, and I can understand Shanghainese, as my parents are from Shanghai and speak it quite a bit, as do all my other relatives.

However, when learning to speak, it was always in Mandarin, so now I can't speak Shanghainese as well. This is a pity, as I would like to be able to speak it, so I've been looking for online resources. I recently stumbled upon this series on Youtube, and thought I'd share it with anyone else in a similar position to mine.

In addition, anyone else who has good stuff for me to learn from, please post it. Also, anyone currently living in Shanghai, or wanting to go there, post a story. I've only ever gone back with parents, visiting relatives, but goddamnit, I'm 18 now, and I wanna go there and experience the nightlife. There seems to be so much fun stuff there to do that I'm missing out on because I only ever go back with parents.

谢谢

And some Shanghainese humor. It's really weird because I understand it all, but I can't repeat it??

Shanghainese is such an awesome dialect. I really enjoy listening to it. I can understand both mandarin and shanghainese pretty well, but my spoken mandarin is broken, and spoken shanghainese nearly nonexistent hahah. Thanks for that link, I'm watching it right now, it's awesome.

Make sure you watch 周立波 shows, they are mainly in mandarin, but there are parts in shanghainese.

If you're coming to Shanghai and want to discover nightlife make sure you PM me :D

I'm going to Shanghai in July. I posted here on the weekend about that. TL Meetup? Though my mandarin is a bit lacking; I speak Cantonese.

Uh I can't remember 周立波 having a really hot wife, but ...

Anyways, I won't bring anyone to Babyface, don't worry (it's been renamed "Richbaby" btw - how pathetic is that name)

Lol I'm exactly like that, although I basically can't speak Shanghainese at all, like I can speak a few sentences but it takes ages for me to translate from mandarin to Shanghainese in my head, and sometimes when a different word is conventionally used in shanghainese i get stuck on the translation.

haha, I'm in same boat as you.

Grew up with my parents speaking shanghainese, so I can understand it fairly well, but I can't speak a single word of it. Never learned it, and never attempted to converse back with my parents in it. I don't even know how to say "hello" in shanghainese, but I can understand both videos fairly well.

I understand the feeling. I can try and converse in Shanghainese, but I am never truly sure that what I'm saying is correct.

Can't speak or understand shanghai at all despite the fact that my father's entire family come from shanghai and surrounding areas.

Personally I can't stand it, it is such a soft language, lack of manly pulse.

Hail the true mandarin!

In the Chinese newspaper classifieds ads here looking for tenants/flat mates, there will be people who specifically state: No Shanghainese people.
