Hey, for all those reading, I have a serious question. My parents do not understand Starcraft at all and refuse to let me play it to the point where they get mad. I use it as a stress reliever because I am playing year round sports and i have to maintain A/B grades while taking AP courses. I am a bronze in Starcraft II and i know most of you are thinking why doesn't this guy quit, he suxx?! but the only losses I have are from disconnects caused by my parents after I have my 2 hours of electronics (exactly 2 hours). I guess what I am trying to say is: even though i love Starcraft and the Starcraft community as well, should i keep playing even though my parents don't want me too?

What rational (they are parents... I realize there might not be any) as to why you can't play games?

If your grades and other areas of life don't suffer for it then try to reason with them perhaps. Playing a few hours a week shouldn't impact your ability to get into a good university (which I assume, is what they care about.)

Ideally, you'd be able to get your parents to be ok with you playing. If not, then do it anyway? I mean can you just close the door to your room or is the computer in a place where they walk by.

well, always get to look forward to graduation, but basically i would say tell them to go f off because it is your time and you should really be able to do what you want to do, especially since you are keeping your grades up.

tell them off, explaining how you arent some stereotypical reject or misfit who is addicted to heroin or something like that...make them appreciate you, from what it sounds they arent appreciating you and they dont believe in you so they are forcing you to follow a schedule and the like to do what they want because they dont trust you to follow the path they want you to (which is a reasonable yet pretty agravating)

good luck my friend, and leagues dont matter its all with how you have fun with the game

The computer is right in the main hallway, basically and my dad is a computer genius so he can track everything i do( except for this post lol). I plan on going to a good university but they think I should never play video games and it's a privilege ( which I understand) that they let me physically have (like the games and computers) but not the time. So.... i don't get it at all.

If i tell them off, my dad's foot will be so far up my ass, i could probably taste his foot. AndI know leagues don't matter, the last games I played were against diamonds and 1 master and I won them all (custom games 1V1 melee)

Day9 Daily 100. Find a way to show it to them. It may not be the be all end all solution, but it should be a good starting point for a topic of discussion.

hmm...do poorly in classes til you get video games back...if its possible to arrange this with teachers to set it up so that you still do the work and get the grades but its all recorded later, so you take no hit in the long run and you get games

T_T if sean plott has no effect than your parents are not going to listen...they are talking at you not to you...in their minds they are right and cannot be wrong

im not sure what you can do to unstigmatize starcraft to them, especially considering they didnt have computer games when they were growing up

I don't think this is a problem with the game of Starcraft itself. It looks to me like a disparity in trust, as in your parents don't know if you have the self-control to have games but still excel in school.

I'd say the best way is to prove to them that you do: ask them for a two week trial period in which you have access to games, and tell them they can revoke access if your grades slip. Two weeks won't hurt a semester or year grade. It's really best for you and your parents to find a sort of compromise like this, IMO; if you build their trust in this area, they'll probably trust you more overall.

I wouldn't exactly "tell them off", but you have to sit down with them and explain why they shouldn't be preventing you from playing. Assuming your grades aren't honestly poor and you don't spend 20+ hours a week gaming, then start with telling them your grades aren't suffering. You can flat out prove this to them. Of course you could always been studying and spending 100% of your free time studying, which would obviously improve your grades to some degree, but that's completely unrealistic; if that is really the only argument they have then I would be content with playing anyway (don't tell them off regardless though, that's not going to help anything).

edit: so pretty much what infinitestory said.

Sit down talk with your parents really smooth, be honest, explain the situation.
Hey talk about White-Ra he works, he have a wife, his one of the best and gaming dont affect in nothing his life.
Try to reach at their heart.

Maybe not to two hours, but I would get used to limiting video game time if you plan on being a high achiever in your future. They can be fun, but they can also easily take control over you and screw up school. I'd be happy with what you have. For a year or two, I was only allowed to use the TV/video games for 20 minutes a day (if that's any consolation).
How's the weather down there?

Honestly, 2 hours seems OK to me... there's a lot of possible hobbies out there, I'm sure you can find other things to do besides gaming.

Yeah...2 hours is a lot of time. Just try to enjoy it and then study hard, man!

They do know that he did go to Harvey Mudd, as well as USC right? As well as a whole host of other pro-gamers who excelled at school. Of the top of my head, Liquid`Tyler went to Duke. Some other noteworthy people involved in E-Sports also went to really top notch schools, Xeris (formerly of Fnatic) went to UCSD, etc etc. I'm sure there are a lot more.

It seems like you've been fighting with your parents recently, it may be a good idea to let things cool off, and start fresh and anew.

Best thing to do, in my opinion, would be to just stop at 2 hours. Don't put up any resistance. Arguments with parents are never won, so just let it go. If you put up a fight, they will only get more constricting. When you get older, you will have more freedom, and then you can do whatever you want to do.

(This is assuming that you are under the age of 18-19, otherwise, they really need to give you some liberties.)

Lol, why do people suggest showing people Day9, I don't understand. Parents don't want their kids to try to be professional video game players.

It's only the #100th one. It was a special episode over supporting your kids in whatever they do. Not a guide how to become a pro gamer.

Btw, me and my brother were only allowed to computer for 1 hour a day at a time. But times change and so do parents. I''m now catching up at a REALLY fast pace lol.
