Hey guys, I like most people really only got involved with TL with the release of Starcraft 2. But, in my spare time I have really come to enjoy and appreciate Brood War, and because of that I have decided to try and teach myself how to play. Since SC2 was my first RTS game I don't really have much experience. I'm high diamond right now in SC2 and play protoss. In BW I'm not sure what race to play, though I do like terran. I'd gladly take any tip/pointers from you guys as I'm sure you're much more knowledgeable than I am.
The problem I'm having right now is connecting to b.net, it keeps saying that I need to re-install which I'm trying now. So once I get that up I should be good to go! I'll try and stream it, but the resolution in BW is kinda funky and I'm not sure how to fix it... :/
Anyways, thanks and gl hf, OverZero

I'm lookin to get back into BW, interested in having a practice partner?
|
Sure! I really suck though... hahaha
|
|
download antihack launcher from iccup.com and play on there, much better latency than bnet
Even though you won't really be able to ladder for a little while you learn the game, there's always people in channel op teamliquid that would practice with you

Practice partner thread is really great. Also, add me as a friend on ICCUP. Ill help you whenever I can. iambach (to add a friend type"\f add iambach" )

Is it normal for every name I try to make an account with is already taken? I feel like I'm doing something wrong...
|
I am in the almost exact same situation as you: Diamond toss who now wants to play some BW (with the exception of my RTS history involving WC 1-3) Send me a pm if you want to practice sometime! I would really like to play some BW with people of my skill in BW (i.e almost non existent)
Edit: To answer the question above me. I had a similar problem. Don't use the Bnet registration. Sign up on Iccup first, then use those same log in credentials to get online onto the Iccup server

Yeah, the bug has existed for a loooong time... If you try to register through BW, you'll always get an account already taken error. Register from iccup.com.

I have an account on iccup, do I just login with that or what do I need to do?

Get down on the ground and do 50 pushups. Can't do it? Then I guess you aren't strong enough.
Just kidding these guys gave great advice!

I hope you can host though. And I think you have to change your port openings...I think it's 6112 or something. you can make a custom firewall port option(cant remember the name) so it allows you to join and host games.

My feelings toward BW -> SC2 transition and what race you play are fairly dependent on your playstyle (which isn't ALWAYS the case, before someone chimes in). It's actually kind of natural to play SC2 Protoss and switch to Terran in BW, because the "standard" playstyle in both is to amass a huge, unstoppable deathball and overwhelm your opponent. It generally goes like this:
BW Terran -> SC2 Protoss (slow-push deathballs) BW Zerg -> SC2 Terran (lots of aggression, similar casters) BW Protoss -> SC2 Zerg (Harassment focused early/mid-game in to many unit producing structures, uses almost the entire tech tree)
Again, this is not to say this is the way the world works and that's how you're going to do it or how anybody did it (IdrA went from BW T -> SC2 Z), and not everyone had those playstyles. I have a huge inspiration from Boxer and Iris, both of which played an extremely aggressive BW Terran. I'm finding I like Protoss (after going BW T -> SC2 T) a lot now, because I have the option of slowpushes, but I want to start incorporating drops/blink stalker/warp-ins similar to the way you could be aggressive with T in BW but still had the option of leap-frogging to your opponents base with MM+Tank or heavy metal (vulture/goliath/tank).
But as a kind of a general rundown, the above should hopefully help you a little bit in deciding which race to play.

be prepared to lose a TON of games at first.. i'm talking like 0% win rate... along with a lot of frustration.. will be worth it though =)

i think broodwar is much more suited to me right now.
brood war is all about playing a solid game. sc2 in mid master and below is all about holding off cheese, 1 base pushes, etc. it's tooo broad and way too hectic in sc2. sc1 is all about mechanics, how tight your build is, micro, and execution.

uuuh, it's not 2 weeks, more like 2 years at least. xD
Basically once you get to a level that you understand what each thing your enemy does/doesn't do (like makes a singe unit or moves something somewhere) means for the whole situation of the game, and you learn how to best take advantage of each of those tiny facts, only then you'll be able to say you have a pretty good understanding of the game.
But to get the hang of the basics, a few months is needed.

I remember the days when I put fear in a D-Level Terrans heart with my sick D-Level Muta micro. It is great when they rage quit because my mutas wrecked their base I miss that the most. Maybe I should go back too and finally get D+.

Actually it was "fixed" when ICCup first started. They "unfixed" it after some time to, as Chef said, discourage people from making a million IDs.

Got the ID issue fixed... Had to make a new account on ICCUP. If anyone wants to play add me TL_OverZero

sorry, i couldn't disagree more There are soooo many noobs on Sc2. And im not surprised but as for iccup, the majority of people are stuck at D rank and those people are still actually pretty damn good. Not to mention nowadays the amount of smurfs on iccup is absolutely ridiculous.
2 weeks to understand the entire game of BW? you need to make it more obvious when your trolling buddy

lol. getting icc c+ is way harder then getting upper masters in sc2.
evry 50 apm allin hero can get masters in sc2,in broodwar youll just get stomped.
granted i dont know how hard icc is these days. but i know how many TERRIBLE players ive m et in upper masters. and when i compare my old wgt/pgt/icc expirience to todays masterleague all i can do is facepalm and remember the days when a rank actually showed you the other persons skill.

I don't think BW is really as a difficult game people make it. It only seems so because sc2 is so pale in comparison.
For me, it is JUST right.
Of course, beating other human opponents in 2011 is a different issue. But i must emphasize, the game itself is not too easy or too hard

well what you say i right.
but compared to sc2 its worlds harder. its stupidly easy to get into the top xK worldwide just by copying a build or cheesing evry game. sc2 is just that random/easy.
try that in broodwar and evry random D- scrub will laugh at you cause your mechanics suck so hard and your builds timings will be terrible.
lets be real, bw is a game for competive men . sc2 is a game where evry random dude can do well if he just knows whats the fotm style is(and gets lucky).

I meant that after like 2 weeks of dedicated playing you can basically understand the overall strategies of each matchup for one race. And if you title your games "1v1 d-", you will get some pretty bad players. Players who just make cannons and such.
