There is alot of hope that SC2 will become a popular esport throughout Europe and America, while most people consider it highly unlikely.

Keeping this in mind, I been very dissatisfied with the quality of shows on TV no adays. One particular area of dissatisfaction would lie in TV game shows. There would be daily gameshows such as Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune that offers 10k-20k in prizes daily. Then I would look at weekly gameshows such as Fox's new million dollar money drop, wipe out and are you smarter than a fifth grader. On average, the contestant would win about 60k or more (nearly the prize pool for the GSL). I also paid special attention to the audience and boy do they have a huge crowd.

Now, I would like to bring your attention to SC2. Currently, SC2 is in an awkward situation in S. Korea with only the GSL streaming SC2. And still, the GSL struggles to garner an live audience with only 1.8k people showing up to the GSL3 finals and 500 people showing up for the 2011 GSL premier. All of these numbers disappoint me because I find SC2 entertaining.

Now, could it be possible that these game shows are more entertaining than SC2? What a single gameshow offers in prize for a single day is equivalent to an entire SC2 tournament. People in America are being entertained by watching people struggle to answer a series of question rather than watching the strategical maneuvering of two geniuses. What baffles me is that many people attends shows like Million Dollar Money drop when all they watch is 2 people struggling to answer only 7 questions. At least daily shows of Jeopardy and Who wants to be a Millionaire contains an ample amount of questions.

Now this leads me to my new question: Is it possible for SC2 to exist in America as a gameshow instead of a sport?

Maybe but all I know is that America will continue to watch brainless stuff like Are you smarter than a 5th grader or million dollar money drop. As a said, it baffles me how this can be more entertaining than SC2 and deserving of the prize money.

Heck, in some episodes, they give away enough money to host several GSLs. Sadly, the only way it would ever be possible for SC2 to air on television is if Blizzard or some entrepreneur decides to take a risk and create a SC2 gameshow and invest in ample commercials to attract new viewers.

You know, this is just because you like video games. Then why not make shows about chess, or even maths/physics shows, and why not other games? It could be also interesting. It's just a matter of taste.

It's just a matter of taste. I could say, boy, this hamburger is so good, why are those people eating a pizza. This hamburger has more meat, special sauce, its a wonder why they're eating a pizza. And the pizza people could say the same thing

Joe Lunchpail on the street understands a quiz show. He may not know all the answers, or even half of them, but he at least knows that the host is asking a trivia question and that the contestant is trying to answer it. Joe Lunchpail on the street would not have a fucking clue what is happening in a SC game unless he's played it before. Even MMA, which is a fight ffs, something you'd think anyone can understand, had a bitch of a time going mainstream because the simple fact was that even though it was practically the simplest kind of competition you can imagine, just two guys fighting, still most people didn't have a clue what was happening once the fight hit the ground.

The only people who would want to attend gsl events are (for the most part) people who identify with and understand starcraft 2. While popular, starcraft 2 is just one computer game in one genre.

Most of the popular game shows are easily appreciated by most people. Anyone can identify with answering trivia questions even though some are better at it and others are worse. The pool of people to attend Jeopardy/WoF/WWtbaM is much larger than the pool of people to attend an sc2 event.
