"Short Story" is a literary term for prose, usually centering around a narrative structure (as opposed to longer works such as novels, which employ significantly more dramatic structure), and does not, specifically, refer to the physical length of the work. In fact, short stories are commonly 8-10 pages in length. If you think this was long, it would be my guess that you aren't often exposed to writing of any significant length. Of course, that's not necessarily a bad thing; not everyone is into reading. But your sardonicism is not really warranted. As for critique, I haven't read it all yet (time constraints and whatnot), but I may give some brief notes when I have. Until then, I'll refrain from any criticism. --EDIT-- In terms of physical length, copy-pasting the story in its current format, font, font size, and sate spacing, the story is roughly 24 pages in length in Microsoft Word. If you used the format standard in published fiction, it would probably be closer to around 15-17, which falls well within the ill-defined physical constraints for being considered a short story (you couldn't even begin to consider it a novella until the page count was well into the 50s). But the primary difference remains the author's intent, rather than actual length. | ||
