I was debating whether this should be a blog or website feedback, I supposed I might come to a clearer conclusion when I reach the end of the post, but this really is all just a thankyou for you great TL moderators/admins/good contributors/non-shit vets with my opinions attached, i think!

This post stemmed from thinking about the report function.

Here's a thing to help us help you. Designed to be a tool where "vets" (1 year and no post count requirement i think? to have report; should be more stringent imo) can help you out.
Now I rarely use this function, but that's probably a combination of two factors being i dont actively hunt posts to report, and the topics i read generally wont have reportable posts ie. i avoid stupid religion threads and sc2 almost anything. But I love being able to just go "hm this person seems like he might be intelligent...aha! he's full of shit! and rude" and report it and know it will be taken care of.

But thank you for improving the site while still maintaining the preference and appreciation for veteran users. Like implementing a report function for vets!

I know many of the new users whine about this stuff, but lets be honest most of us dont like the new users as it is because many of them are terrible. A few of them will ripen and go on to be great members of the community. But most will just stagnate and increase our hit counter, while staying over the threshold of ban hammer. Many of them can cause and increase discussion as well as income, which creates a cyclic pattern that does lead to improvement, so kudos to you gents there.

But lets be realistic anywhere else you go in life there is preference for seniority in almost every way possible. Just be thankful this isn't jail and we dont give you the black blanket welcome. I always assume the best in people before condemning them though, unless they post in the sc2 strat section.

I am brought back to thinking about Carlin's "People are fucking boring!"

When I read a topic i really try to read posts from new people but 95% of the time it's the same crap that lacks any individuality or interest, then i see a fancy icon or bold or something snazzy and not only does it attract my attention but these posts are 99% of the time better than the general feel of the topic. So I feel very happy these people have privileges.

I kind of start to group myself a bit more and more into this vet group these days, but I think that's only because of how many new people have come in the last year or so that I feel ancient, but in comparison I'm sure there's many who've been here longer than me, and substantially more useful lol.

I'm reminded of a guy i know who posts here, and he's retarded and for lack of a better word well lets just say it rhymes with maggot. And he does not see himself as this, because as with people who have personality disorders (narcissistic) his personality traits are inflexible and maladaptive. It brought me great joy to see he got temp banned on here not long ago! :D

So thank you TL staff for catering to everyone, but catering to us lowly vets a little more, and putting up with our bullshit because we have experience and insight or something along the lines of that hibber-jash.(okay lets be honest it's because we know where you keep the spare key)

note:
1.obviously one must be a new user to become a veteran.
2.TL is a nice balance of semi-elitism and being really nice to new people and giving them MANY chances
3.nah no number three
4.More vet stuff like the report button would be cool :D

ps. i hope it doesn't sound like im shitting on new users tooo much, some of them are great guys and some have potential. Majority rules is a sad principal alot of the time.

How about when more than 50% of reports actually are clear then we'll talk lol

Instead of like "wow this post sucks" and I have to spend 5 minutes figuring out wtf is wrong with it :<

we need to be able to rate or thumbs up users topics + replys
And if someone gets a certain amount of Positive feedback they get a special icon that people can catch easier when skimming.

im surprised something like this hasn't been implemented already

I've been meaning to ask about this. When we see a bad post and want to report it do we just go ahead and tell you guys what wrong with it/how it breaks the commandments? Anything else we should know about that feature.

Also, how bad should a post be to consider reporting it, I'm unsure as to whether I should report things that are extremely borderline or just report of stuff that is obviously total garbage.

Yes I think the more specific you are about why you are reporting the post the better. Just because it 'seems obvious' why the post is bad doesn't mean you shouldn't explain it in the report reason. If it's extremely obvious and you want to loosen up a bit on the report reason then I guess that's ok (like if a post of a guy saying "mooooooo" 1000 times and nothing else, and you report with "meaningless spam" that would be ok).

Perhaps this new idea can be put in place instead of the post count; the post count is a decent measure of veteranship but it is almost no indication on whether or not the person is a good poster. A thumbs-up system would be the new way to "rise up the ranks", or perhaps a combination of the two.

i love the report function. I think i have used it 5 or 6 times and the bad guys have all been warned or banned.
Before the report tool people would make many posts like "Damn this guy is trolling so hard" or " Wow stop being / racist / homophobic etc..." and they rarely tried to PM a mod.

Now no more trolls, no more thread derailments people just use #report

This is so sweet <3

Haha, do mods even have the report button?

I use the report button maybe once a week, but I do try to be clear about it. Actually unless the post is REALLY bad I have a hard time hitting it

Oh god no. The whole thumbs up/down is a bad idea, and just reinforces groupthink (like reddit). It also leads to people thumbing down everything they disagree with, regardless of if its correct or not, and leads to people being afraid to speak their mind about a controversial topic.

The current system works just fine. You make bad threads, they'll get closed. Repeat offenders get warned/banned. Good posters continue to be good posters and set an example. I'll take TL moderation over the likes of reddit user-based karma moderation any day of the week.

Yes?

It's helpful for getting more opinions on something borderline/questionable.

I just wish there was an option that let me look at a thread but only show posts by people who don't have a worker icon

That is basically how I read SC2 threads already but it would save me a lot of scrolling : 3

Wait, posts have a report button? O.o

Anyway; I'm really impressed on the great balance between serious and lo;wut posts on this forum; without either of them getting the upper hand. Wether I want information or just some giggles, TL has it. A great thumbs up for the moderators here and the superb community here!

That defeats the purpose though, if users are ignored because they're new. Look at the translators, a lot of them have low post counts yet their contributions are quite important. Similarly, there are a fair bit of new posters with relatively low counts who make meaningful contributions to threads. Hiding their posts will just make TL elitist (or more so, depending on some poeple's perceptions). The solution isn't to ignore/shun the new posters, its to educate/reform/get rid of the bad ones.

edit: also, segregation based on user counts will just encourage people to spam posts so that they can pass the threshold from being "lesser members".

I'm not suggesting that that should be something that actually happens as the default, just that I wish the option was available. When there's some 40 important page SC2 thread I am only really interested in the thoughts of a few people but there is no way to find them except for mashing page down while scanning icons. This is especially bad when a thread is so big that there's no "all" button.

Like during some GSL LR threads ret made some posts about strategy - how am I supposed to find all of those in a 90+ page thread that adds 7 pages every time I refresh?

I guess a better solution would for me to have a list of posters and then the option to view only the posts in a thread made by them, sort of like the inverse of an ignore list. But I recognize that this will never happen, no matter how awesome it would be ;_;

What about feedback for people reporting? Even a generic feedback PM selected from a list of responses can help posters improve their reports in the future. A mod could flag a report as good, inaccurate or lacking details, or bad/incorrect report, and the poster can reflect on it for next time. Consecutive bad or inaccurate reports could lead to the users losing the ability to report (like the warning system for posting).

This would require some work, but its the only way I can see to get a significant improvement in the % of quality reporting.

Sometimes I do pm people who do shitty reports. If someone consistently does shitty reports they can and will lose that privilege. The system is already in place for that.

I think this sums up TL really well, and it's the reason why there is such a sense of community here.

Also, I didn't even know there was a report function, which I guess classifies me as a new user =/

I think there should also be feedback if any action was actually taken. I think it's just as important as mentioning that action wasn't taken for such and such reason. I sometimes forget that I reported someone and I'm always constantly worried that I'm abusing the report button (not likely since I've used it like 5 times, but I'm paranoid).
Even during difficult times, when I sat down to play the game, there were times where it felt like god has descended down and played [for me].

I don't think I've ever used the report either.... I'd make a shitty mod, I would dislike the feeling of obstructing people from expressing themselves. If they're shitty, allow them to be shitty. But I still like TL so I'm obviously wrong.
