By cost, the fit is looking to be the overall better option. Unless you want/need the additional performance of the GTI, I would want the fit

exactly why im saying to get the fit (assuming this is your daily driver), as an option there are tons of cheap sportscars that you can get for under 5k, the mazda miata comes to mind and you can use these as sunday drivers where if you screw something up your still able to get to work and such plus with a sunday driver you can push it harder because the wear and tear wont matter as much for the same reason as if you crash it because you still have a daily driver ^.^

edit: plus with the money you save (you said 7k plus the fuel type difference) you will have more than enough to pull this off ^.^

Have you test driven these yet? I've heard from a friend who test drove the GTI say that during turns, he had turn the steering wheel way more in the GTI than he is used to in a Japanese car. It was his first time driving an European car. That itself made him lose interest in the GTI.

Can anyone confirm this? I drove only Japanese cars so I wouldn't know.

GTI is a much nicer car that the 3, and they come in stick as well. So if those are the options go with GTI still.

If money is not a problem then get the GTI it's a much nicer car.

What is better about the gti besides the brand name? Not street performance. Supposedly reliability? My speed 3 hasn't had issues although I admit it's only been a couple of years haha.

If you're female save $7k and get the Honda.
If you're not ... well, one of those cars is designed for women.

Man, I saw this topic title and got really excited because I thought it read "Which Carl?" and couldn't possibly imagine what could be inside except that any topic beginning with the subject "Which Carl?" couldn't possibly be all bad, and in the fraction of a second it took for the page to load I hoped silently that no one had posted "I think you should go for a Hot one" so I could do it, even if to do so requires all the wit of playing tee ball, only to be greeted with two cars in jpg, whereupon I realized that I was mistaken, that it said "Which Car!?," and that it is a blog whose subject I know next to nothing about and therefore could not contribute meaningfully to beyond this long-winded run-on sentence/paragraph (which is intentional, I assure you) whose design is such as to mimic driving without brakes, where the brakes are periods, and you should always use both where necessary.

So I think you should go for a Hot one.

If you are planning to do any future work on your car, get the honda. Being Honda and cheaper means there will be more after market support for it. If theres anything wrong in the future, I'd imagine the Honda parts would be cheaper and more readily available as well.

If you don't care at all about actual maintenance of the car and its just something nice to drive in, get the GTI if you feel comfortable paying the extra cash.

I love my GTI, so if price is not an issue I would say go for the GTI as it is the nicer car-- definitely in terms of interior and craftsmanship. The GTI has sport tuned suspension so, with out a doubt it will have better handling than the Fit.

Honestly don't see how these two cars compare other than both being hatchbacks. Get the Honda if you just need something to get around in and/or don't care too much about performance driving. Get the GTI if you value speed and performance and most importantly want to spend ~$26k after taxes for a new one.

What do you use it for? If it's just mostly city driving and some highway, then fit for sure. If highway mostly, fit still wins. It is the gas money matters, not the looks. $7000 gas money can last u years and years......

If you can easily afford the GTi, then get it. It's by far a better car.

I drive a Honda, and there is this guy in my town who drives a Volkswagon(maybe a GTI, not sure). He has theses stickers all over the rear windshield with all this Honda hate. For example, one sticker is of Calvin peeing on the Honda logo. For this reason, I find it funny that you are deciding between these two makes.

As for advice, get the Fit because screw that guy with the stickers.

My family has two vw's ('07 jetta &'06 passat) and I love driving either cars but be wary of their repair costs should you need them.

little rant below
+ Show Spoiler +
Our jetta had so many electrical problems ever since we bought the car new. It ranged from static coming out of speakers with radio off at the start to broken tail light warning that comes on whenever it feels like it-never got fixed even after 3 visits to the "vw certified"mechanic and now they won't even take a look at it without me paying for the labor since the warranty is done.

The passat has its own set of problems which include: bubbling and consequent flaking of every door lock/unlock switches' coating material (these would be covered under the "bumper to bumper" warranty but guess what they happened right as warranty period ended and each switch would cost me $50 to replace so $200 to replace them all), passenger side seat adjusting gear (stupidest way to implement a car seat lean back/forward btw) snapping off with minimal use. Just two months ago the catalytic converter failed somehow (unheard of from a <5 year old car as parts like that last for a car's entire life), which meant I had to drive the damn car sounding like a ghetto-pimped honda civics from 90's for entire weekend until they could fit me in to inspect it. Thankfully this part was covered under state mandatory emissions warranty which last longer than the regular warranty but if it wasn't covered somehow it would haveeasily cost me at least 2k.

Luckily most of these problems are covered under the warranty but for those things that aren't covered or when the warranties are done, you will have to pay for their relatively expensive parts (+ labor of course).

If money isn't an issue for you down the line (gas+repair costs) then go for the gti as the vw's definitely have an edge when it comes to fun-to-drive factor over most if not all cars in their respective segments. But in my experience their reliability is quite terrible and I would personally stay away from purchasing another vw unless money isn't an objective.

GTI. By a long shot. [insert absurd metaphors about how much the GTI is better than the honda fit] My god even the name of it is fucking terrible. honda fit. it just sounds bad.

GTI if you care about your image/safety, Fit if you are boring and have safe commute.
